    Behavior of hydropower plant "La Yesca" Mexico, after two year of built: Comportamento da usina hidrelétrica "La Yesca" México, após dois anos de construção

    This paper presents the program instrumentation, monitoring and performance of Hydropower Plant “La Yesca”, which is a concrete face rockfill dam, with 207,5 m high (inaugurated on November 6, 2012).  During de filling of the reservoir, high leaks where measured on the drainage gallery of the curtain and on the injection and drainage galleries, particularly on the right bank. To reduce the anomalous seepage in the galleries a series of studies were done to define the source of the leaks and implement corrective measures. Currently the embankments of the dam and the concrete face show a good behavior. They present less than 20 cm of maximum settlement from the reservoir filling and two years of operation. The instruments placed on the joints of the slabs of concrete face show less than 15 mm in opening or settlement as result of the good performance

Background: Illnesses transmitted by Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika comprise a considerable global burden; mosquito control is the primary public health tool to reduce disease transmission. Current interventions are inadequate and insecticide resistance threatens the effectiveness of these options. Dried attractive bait stations (DABS) are a novel mechanism to deliver insecticide to Ae. aegypti. The DABS are a high-contrast 28 inch2 surface coated with dried sugar-boric acid solution. Aedes aegypti are attracted to DABS by visual cues only, and the dried sugar solution elicits an ingestion response from Ae. aegypti landing on the surface. The study presents the development of the DABS and tests of their impact on Ae. aegypti mortality in the laboratory and a series of semi-field trials. Methods: We conducted multiple series of laboratory and semi-field trials to assess the survivability of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes exposed to the DABS. In the laboratory experiments, we assessed the lethality, the killing mechanism, and the shelf life of the device through controlled experiments. In the semi-field trials, we released laboratory-reared female Ae. aegypti into experimental houses typical of peri-urban tropical communities in South America in three trial series with six replicates each. Laboratory experiments were conducted in Quito, Ecuador, and semi-field experiments were conducted in Machala, Ecuador, an area with abundant wild populations of Ae. aegypti and endemic arboviral transmission. Results: In the laboratory, complete lethality was observed after 48 hours regardless of physiological status of the mosquito. The killing mechanism was determined to be through ingestion, as the boric acid disrupted the gut of the mosquito. In experimental houses, total mosquito mortality was greater in the treatment house for all series of experiments (P \u3c 0.0001). Conclusions: The DABS devices were effective at killing female Ae. aegypti under a variety of laboratory and semi-field conditions. DABS are a promising intervention for interdomiciliary control of Ae. aegypti and arboviral disease prevention.[Figure not available: see fulltext.

    Edible films based on black chia (Salvia hispanica l.) seed mucilage containing Rhus microphylla fruit phenolic extract

    Functional films based on black chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seed mucilage (BCm) containing Rhus microphylla (Rm) fruit phenolic extract were built and characterized. A hydro-alcohol extract (HAE) of Rm was incorporated as the bioactive agent due to its noteworthy phenolic profile, and good antioxidant and antifungal activities. The effects of the BCm concentration (0.2% and 0.4%, w/v), HAE incorporation, and their interaction with glycerol (1.0%, w/v) and calcium chloride (0.05%, w/v) on the films physicochemical properties were evaluated. The filmogenic solutions successfully fitted to the HerschelBulkley model (R2 0.05) changed by the HAE addition, but their surface tension was enhanced (p < 0.05), which could favor their coating ability. The polyanionic nature of the systems (zeta potential-Zp values from 26.9 to 33.3 mV) allowed them to interact with Ca2+ cations, thus forming stable and resistant films. All the films showed low water solubility (15.0% to 22.3%) and high permeability (3.7 to 4.0 × 1010 g m1 s1 Pa1), as well as high biodegradability (moisture content from 66.0% to 80.9%); although the moisture content was reduced (p < 0.05) with HAE addition. The combination of higher BCm ratio and HAE addition (BCm0.4+Rm) led to a more resistant, thick, opaque, and dark film compared with the others obtained. This study reveals the BCm-based films potential, highlighting those with HAE, representing a novel alternative to improve the quality of food products.Financial support from Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro (UAAAN) is gratefully acknowledged by the authors.     Q-switched mode locking noise-like pulse generation from a thulium-doped all-fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation

    Q-switched mode locking (QML) noise-like pulse (NLP) emission from an all-fiber thulium-doped laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation effect is reported. The QML emission is obtained in a cavity with net anomalous dispersion in a pump power interval in between the CW laser threshold and the threshold of the NLP regime. Highest-energy QML pulses were observed with a repetition rate of 812 kHz with a pump power of 520 mW at the optical wavelength of 1881.09 nm. A maximum overall energy of 460 nJ at an average output power of 6.4 mW was reached, which corresponds to a burst of mode-locked noise-like sub-pulses with 8.7 ns of pulse duration within a QML envelope of 11 μs. These results demonstrate unconventional pulse operation regime of NLPs and provide insights into the dynamics of mode-locked fiber lasers

    Numerical resolution of the hyperbolic heat equation using smoothed mathematical functions instead of Heaviside and Dirac delta distributions

    The hyperbolic bioheat equation (HBE) has been used to model heating applications involving very short power pulses. This equation includes two mathematical distributions (Heaviside and Delta) which have to be necessarily substituted for smoothed mathematical functions when the HBE is solved by numerical methods. This study focuses on which type of smoothed functions would be suitable for this purpose, i.e. those which would provide solutions similar to those obtained analytically from the original Heaviside and Delta distributions. The logistic function was considered as a substitute for the Heaviside function, while its derivative and the probabilistic Gaussian function were considered as substitutes for the Delta distribution. We also considered polynomial interpolation functions, in particular, the families of smoothed functions with continuous second derivative without overshoot used by COMSOL Multiphysics. All the smoothed functions were used to solve the HBE by the Finite Element Method (COMSOL Multiphysics), and the solutions were compared to those obtained analytically from the original Heaviside and Delta distributions. The results showed that only the COMSOL smoothed functions provide a numerical solution almost identical to the analytical one. Finally, we demonstrated mathematically that in order to find a suitable smoothed function (f) that must adequately substitute any mathematical distribution (D) in the HBE, the difference D - f must have compact support.
