The department of Boyacá is characterized by being a pantry agriculture for much of Colombia, as well as its landscapes and colonial peoples are part of those elements that any Colombian recognizes this department, on the other hand, it has become in recent decades a source of employment for the inhabitants of the municipality of Nobsa. Specifically in the path Las Caleras is where they are open pit mines where activities are carried out Limes tone extraction and obtaining lime (Miguel Gamboa 2004). However, those activities are still carried out craft without the implementation of technologies that allow control the environmental impacts caused by the material particulate generated into the atmosphere, as a result of its of production such as extraction, crushing, calcination, hydration, storage and finally transport. For these reasons, environmental problems and pollution of the air of the municipality of Nobsa falls on the sector producing lime For this reason, the Environmental Impact Study is prepared under the parameters of ISO14001: 2015 focused on the development of the lime production, therefore, it has also considered various studies, which help to decide the environmental conditions of the area, determining and limiting the impact of these activities to through the ecological matrix method (Miguel Gamboa 2004).For the case study the air component is identified, where indicates that most of the actions are generating agents of various pollutants that alter air quality

Inactivation of nuclear GSK3 beta by Ser(389) phosphorylation promotes lymphocyte fitness during DNA double-strand break response

    Get PDF
Variable, diversity and joining (V(D)J) recombination and immunoglobulin class switch recombination (CSR) are key processes in adaptive immune responses that naturally generate DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and trigger a DNA repair response. It is unclear whether this response is associated with distinct survival signals that protect T and B cells. Glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3 beta) is a constitutively active kinase known to promote cell death. Here we show that phosphorylation of GSK3 beta on Ser(389) by p38 MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) is induced selectively by DSBs through ATM (ataxia telangiectasia mutated) as a unique mechanism to attenuate the activity of nuclear GSK3 beta and promote survival of cells undergoing DSBs. Inability to inactivate GSK3 beta through Ser(389) phosphorylation in Ser(389)Ala knockin mice causes a decrease in the fitness of cells undergoing V(D)J recombination and CSR. Preselection-Tcrb repertoire is impaired and antigen-specific IgG antibody responses following immunization are blunted in Ser(389)GSK3 beta knockin mice. Thus, GSK3 beta emerges as an important modulator of the adaptive immune response. We thank Dr T. Honjo and Dr K. Spatio-temporal statistical analysis of PM1 and PM2.5 concentrations and their key influencing factors at Guayaquil city, Ecuador

    Get PDF
Guayaquil, Ecuador, is in a tropical area on the equatorial Pacific Ocean coast of South America. Since 2008 the city has been increasing its population, vehicle fleet and manufacturing industries. Within the city there are various industrial and urban land uses sharing the same space. With regard to air quality there is a lack of government information on it. Therefore, the research’s aim was to investigate the spatio-temporal characteristics of PM1 and PM2.5 concentrations and their main influencing factors. For this, both PM fractions were sampled and a bivariate analysis (cross-correlation and Pearson's correlation), multivariate linear and logistic regression analysis was applied. Hourly and daily PM1 and PM2.5 were the dependent variables, and meteorological variables, occurrence of events and characteristics of land use were the independent variables. We found 48% exceedances of the PM2.5-24 h World Health Organization 2021 threshold’s, which questions the city’s air quality. The cross-correlation function and Pearson’s correlation analysis indicate that hourly and daily temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed have a complex nonlinear relationship with PM concentrations. Multivariate linear and logistic regression models for PM1-24 h showed that rain and the flat orography of cement plant sector decrease concentrations; while unusual PM emission events (traffic jams and vegetation-fires) increase them. The same models for PM2.5- 24 h show that the dry season and the industrial sector (strong activity) increase the concentration of PM2.5-24 h, and the cement plant decrease them. Public policies and interventions should aim to regulate land uses while continuously monitoring emission sources, both regular and unusual

Whether people living with HIV (PLWH) are at greater risk of acquiring SARS-CoV-2 infection is currently unknown. Prospective serologic studies may allow seroincidence analyses, where all infections are accurately identified. Because of this, we evaluated the incidence of associated factors with and the clinical outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in PLWH in Southern Spain. This prospective cohort study included PLWH from a Tertiary University Hospital in Southern Spain. Patients were enrolled in the study if (1) they had attended as outpatients our Unit from 1 August 2019 to 8 February 2020 and (2) had two subsequent evaluations from 9 February 2020 to 4 March 2021. SARS-CoV-2 infections were diagnosed by PCR, antigen detection or serology. Seven hundred and nine PLWH were included in the study. Of them, 55 [7.8%, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 5.9%-9.9%] patients developed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Between 18 May and 29 November 2020, the rate of seroconversion was 5.3% (95% CI: 3.1%-9.0%) for the general population in the area of Seville and 2.3% (95% CI: 1.3%-2.6%) for PLWH in this study (p = .001). After multivariable analysis, adjusted by age, sex, and risk factors for HIV infection, active tobacco use and CDC stage, active tobacco smoking was the only factor independently associated with lower risk of SARS-Cov-2 infection [Incidence rate ratio: 0.29 (95% CI 0.16-0.55) p < .001]. In conclusion, the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among PLWH in Southern Spain during the ongoing pandemic was lower than that reported for the general population in the same area. This work was supported in part by the Instituto de Salud CarlosIII (Project ‘PI16/01443’), integrated in the national I+D+i 2013–2016andco-fundedbytheEuropeanUnion(ERDF/ESF,‘Investinginyour future’), by the Spanish Network for AIDS investigation (RIS)(www.red.es/redes/inicio)(RD16/0025/0010,RD16/0025/0040),asapartoftheNacionalI+D+I,ISCIIISubdirecciónGeneraldeEvaluaciónand the European Fund for Development of Regions (FEDER). Analysis of conservation priorities of Iberoamerican cattle based on autosomal microsatellite markers

    Get PDF
Articles in International JournalsBackground: Determining the value of livestock breeds is essential to define conservation priorities, manage genetic diversity and allocate funds. Within- and between-breed genetic diversity need to be assessed to preserve the highest intra-specific variability. Information on genetic diversity and risk status is still lacking for many Creole cattle breeds from the Americas, despite their distinct evolutionary trajectories and adaptation to extreme environmental conditions. Methods: A comprehensive genetic analysis of 67 Iberoamerican cattle breeds was carried out with 19 FAOrecommended microsatellites to assess conservation priorities. Contributions to global diversity were investigated using alternative methods, with different weights given to the within- and between-breed components of genetic diversity. Information on Iberoamerican plus 15 worldwide cattle breeds was used to investigate the contribution of geographical breed groups to global genetic diversity. Results: Overall, Creole cattle breeds showed a high level of genetic diversity with the highest level found in breeds admixed with zebu cattle, which were clearly differentiated from all other breeds. Within-breed kinships revealed seven highly inbred Creole breeds for which measures are needed to avoid further genetic erosion. However, if contribution to heterozygosity was the only criterion considered, some of these breeds had the lowest priority for conservation decisions. The Weitzman approach prioritized highly differentiated breeds, such as Guabalá, Romosinuano, Cr. Patagonico, Siboney and Caracú, while kinship-based methods prioritized mainly zebu-related breeds. With the combined approaches, breed ranking depended on the weights given to the within- and between-breed components of diversity. Overall, the Creole groups of breeds were generally assigned a higher priority for conservation than the European groups of breeds. Conclusions: Conservation priorities differed significantly according to the weight given to within- and betweenbreed genetic diversity. Thus, when establishing conservation programs, it is necessary to also take into account other features. Creole cattle and local isolated breeds retain a high level of genetic diversity. The development of sustainable breeding and crossbreeding programs for Creole breeds, and the added value resulting from their products should be taken into consideration to ensure their long-term survival
