This article presents an unknown and unpublished text written by Quevedo, the Memorial de don Francisco de Quevedo Villegas dado a la Inquisición General sobre los libros del Monte Santo de Granada, with an annotated edition and preceded by an introductory study. The study shows evidence for Quevedo’s authorship of the text and suggests an approximate date of composition. In the Memorial, Quevedo defends the fake nature of the texts and relics found in the Sacromonte de Granada and urges the Inquisition to burn them down instead of sending them to Rome for further examination, as Pope Urban VIII had requested. The text confirms Quevedo’s inclination to influence issues of government as well as his adhesion to Catholic orthodoxy and his aspiration to historiographical rigour.

High selectivity of TiC-CDC for CO2/N2 separation

    Get PDF
A series of carbide-derived carbons (CDC) have been prepared starting from TiC and using different chlorine treatment temperatures (500–1200 °C). Contrary to N2 adsorption measurements at −196 °C, CO2 adsorption measurements at room temperature and high pressure (up to 1 MPa) together with immersion calorimetry measurements into dichloromethane suggest that the synthesized CDC exhibit a similar porous structure, in terms of narrow pore volume, independently of the temperature of the reactive extraction treatment used (samples synthesized below 1000 °C). Apparently, these carbide-derived carbons exhibit narrow constrictions were CO2 adsorption under standard conditions (0 °C and atmospheric pressure) is kinetically restricted. The same accounts for a slightly larger molecule as N2 at a lower adsorption temperature (−196 °C), i.e. textural parameters obtained from N2 adsorption measurements on CDC must be underestimated. Furthermore, here we show experimentally that nitrogen exhibits an unusual behavior, poor affinity, on these carbide-derived carbons. CH4 with a slightly larger diameter (0.39 nm) is able to partially access the inner porous structure whereas N2, with a slightly smaller diameter (0.36 nm), does not. Consequently, these CDC can be envisaged as excellent sorbent for selective CO2 capture in flue-gas streams. This work was supported by the National Science Centre under the Grant No. DEC–2011/01/N/ST5/05595. A Mobility Determination Method for Parallel Platforms Based on the Lie Algebra of SE(3) and Its Subspaces

    Get PDF
This contribution presents a screw theory-based method for determining the mobility of fully parallel platforms. The method is based on the application of three stages. The first stage involves the application of the intersection of subalgebras of Lie algebra, se(3), of the special Euclidean group, SE(3), associated with the legs of the platform. The second stage analyzes the possibility of the legs of the platform generating a sum or direct sum of two subalgebras of the Lie algebra, se(3). The last stage, if necessary, considers the possibility of the kinematic pairs of the legs satisfying certain velocity conditions; these conditions reduce the platform’s mobility analysis to one that can be solved using one of the two previous stages. Several examples are illustrated

Thinning of the Monte Perdido Glacier in the Spanish Pyrenees since 1981

This paper analyzes the evolution of the Monte Perdido Glacier, the third largest glacier in the Pyrenees, from 1981 to the present. We assessed the evolution of the glacier''s surface area by analysis of aerial photographs from 1981, 1999, and 2006, and changes in ice volume by geodetic methods with digital elevation models (DEMs) generated from topographic maps (1981 and 1999), airborne lidar (2010) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014) data. We interpreted the changes in the glacier based on climate data from nearby meteorological stations. The results indicate that the degradation of this glacier accelerated after 1999. The rate of ice surface loss was almost three times greater during 1999-2006 than during earlier periods. Moreover, the rate of glacier thinning was 1.85 times faster during 1999-2010 (rate of surface elevation change = -8.98 ± 1.80 m, glacier-wide mass balance = -0.73 ± 0.14 m w.e. yr-1) than during 1981-1999 (rate of surface elevation change = -8.35 ± 2.12 m, glacier-wide mass balance = -0.42 ± 0.10 m w.e. yr-1). From 2011 to 2014, ice thinning continued at a slower rate (rate of surface elevation change = -1.93 ± 0.4 m yr-1, glacier-wide mass balance = -0.58 ± 0.36 m w.e. yr-1). This deceleration in ice thinning compared to the previous 17 years can be attributed, at least in part, to two consecutive anomalously wet winters and cool summers (2012-2013 and 2013-2014), counteracted to some degree by the intense thinning that occurred during the dry and warm 2011-2012 period. However, local climatic changes observed during the study period do not seem sufficient to explain the acceleration of ice thinning of this glacier, because precipitation and air temperature did not exhibit statistically significant trends during the study period. Rather, the accelerated degradation of this glacier in recent years can be explained by a strong disequilibrium between the glacier and the current climate, and likely by other factors affecting the energy balance (e.g., increased albedo in spring) and feedback mechanisms (e.g., heat emitted from recently exposed bedrock and debris covered areas)
