    Pulsed-Field Gradient NMR Self Diffusion and Ionic Conductivity Measurements for Liquid Electrolytes Containing LiBFā‚„ and Propylene Carbonate

    Liquid electrolytes have been prepared using lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBFā‚„) and propylene carbonate (PC). Pulsed-field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) measurements were taken for the cation, anion and solvent molecules using lithium (ā·Li), fluorine (Ā¹ā¹F) and hydrogen (Ā¹H) nuclei, respectively. It was found that lithium diffusion was slow compared to the much larger fluorinated BFā‚„ anion likely resulting from a large solvation shell of the lithium. Ionic conductivity and viscosity have also been measured for a range of salt concentrations and temperatures. By comparing the measured conductivity with a ideal predicted conductivity derived from the Nernst-Einstein equation and self diffusion coefficients the degree of ionic association of the anion and cation was determined and was observed to increase with salt concentration and temperature. Using the measured viscosity and self diffusion coefficients the effective radius of each of the species was determined for various salt concentrations

    Effects of movement velocity and training frequency of resistance exercise on functional performance in older adults: a randomised controlled trial

    Objectives: To investigate the effects that high-velocity, low-load (HVLL) and low-velocity, high-load (LVHL) resistance exercise, performed once or twice-weekly, have on indices of functional performance (primary outcome), maximal strength, and body composition (secondary outcomes) in older adults. Methods: In a randomised, controlled, multi-armed, parallel design, 54 moderately-highly active, but resistance exercise naĆÆve older adults (aged 60ā€“79 years), attended baseline and post-10-week intervention assessment sessions. Physical and functional assessments were completed, and predicted one-repetition maximums (1-RM) were obtained for eight exercises. Participants were then randomised into one of five conditions: HVLL once-weekly (HVLL1: n = 11) or twice-weekly (HVLL2: n = 11), LVHL once-weekly (LVHL1: n = 10) or twice-weekly (LVHL2: n = 11), no-exercise control condition (CON: n = 11). The HVLL conditions completed 3 sets of 14 repetitions at 40% 1-RM and the LVHL conditions, 3 sets of 7 repetitions at 80% 1-RM. In total, 50 participants completed all testing and were included in analyses. Results: Only LVHL2 improved 30-sec chair stand performance (p =.035; g = 0.89), arm curls (p =.011; g = 1.65) and grip-strength (p =.015; g = 0.34) compared to CON. LVHL2 improved maximal strength compared to CON for 7/8 exercises (p <.05). Whereas, LVHL1 and HVLL2 only improved seated row and chest press compared to CON (p <.05). Conclusion: Possibly due to the lower intensity nature of the HVLL conditions, LVHL, twice-weekly was most beneficial for improving functional performance and strength in moderately-highly active older adults. Therefore, we recommend that exercise professionals ensure resistance exercise sessions have sufficient intensity of effort and volume, in order to maximise functional performance and strength gains in older adults.Ā 

    Background EEG connectivity captures the time-course of epileptogenesis in a mouse model of epilepsy

However, how a network evolves from a healthy state through the process of epileptogenesis remains unclear. To address this question, here, we study longitudinal epicranial background EEG recordings (30 electrodes, EEG free from epileptiform activity) of a mouse model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. We analyse functional connectivity networks and observe that over the time-course of epileptogenesis the networks become increasingly asymmetric. Furthermore, computational modelling reveals that a set of nodes, located outside of the region of initial insult, emerges as particularly important for the network dynamics. These findings are consistent with experimental observations, thus demonstrating that ictogenic mechanisms can be revealed on the EEG, that computational models can be used to monitor unfolding epileptogenesis and that both the primary focus and epileptic network play a role in epileptogenesis.Epilepsy Research UKEngineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)Wellcome Trus

    Integrating modes of policy analysis and strategic management practice : requisite elements and dilemmas

    There is a need to bring methods to bear on public problems that are inclusive, analytic, and quick. This paper describes the efforts of three pairs of academics working from three different though complementary theoretical foundations and intervention backgrounds (i.e., ways of working) who set out together to meet this challenge. Each of the three pairs had conducted dozens of interventions that had been regarded as successful or very successful by the client groups in dealing with complex policy and strategic problems. One approach focused on leadership issues and stakeholders, another on negotiating competitive strategic intent with attention to stakeholder responses, and the third on analysis of feedback ramifications in developing policies. This paper describes the 10 year longitudinal research project designed to address the above challenge. The important outcomes are reported: the requisite elements of a general integrated approach and the enduring puzzles and tensions that arose from seeking to design a wide-ranging multi-method approach

    Childrenā€™s perceptions of factors that influence PE enjoyment: A qualitative investigation

    Background. Physical education (PE) is a key setting for children to engage in health-enhancing physical activity (PA). Factors influencing PE enjoyment in secondary schools are well researched. Less is known, however, about the factors children in elementary schools perceive to be important in promoting enjoyment, and how the current PE delivery framework in UK primary schools (combining specialist external coaches and generalist teachers) impacts on childrenā€™s motivational experiences. According to self-determination theory (SDT), enjoyment of activities is an intrinsic motivator for sustained engagement. Understanding childrenā€™s perceptions of PE is therefore critical if PE instructors are to increase enjoyment and the promotion of PA within and beyond PE. Purpose. To investigate childrenā€™s perceptions of factors that influence PE enjoyment, and interpret findings in the context of SDT and the promotion of autonomous motivation. Participants. Primary school pupils recruited from a cluster of four schools within a socio-economically deprived area of a large city in the North-West of England. Data collection and analysis. Eight focus groups were conducted with 47 children (23 boys) aged 7-11. Mixed gender focus groups included 4-6 children clustered by school years 3-4 (ages 7-9 years) and 5-6 (ages 9-11 years). Children were asked about their PE experiences and factors that influenced their perceived PE enjoyment. Transcripts were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically using NVivo10 analysis software. Findings. Factors reported to influence childrenā€™s perceived PE enjoyment included 1) individual preferences, 2) peer behaviour, 3) instructor behaviour. Findings were interpreted in relation to SDT, and recommendations are given to help instructors and schools create a PE environment that enhances childrenā€™s enjoyment of PE. Conclusions. PE instructors and peers are important in creating an environment that supports childrenā€™s psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, which influence PE enjoyment. To consistently provide children with enjoyable PE lessons, primary schools are advised to support the ongoing development of generalist teachers and facilitate better working relationships between generalist teachers and specialist coaches. SDT can be used by instructors to guide practice that enhances childrenā€™s enjoyment of PE

    Educator perspectives on factors influencing childrenā€™s school-based physical activity

    Formative research is an important first step in the design and development of childrenā€™s school-based physical activity (PA) interventions. Exploration of educator (headteacher and PE-coordinator) perceptions toward the promotion of school-based PA, including physical education (PE) delivery has however been limited. This study took a socio-ecological approach to explore the barriers and facilitators of childrenā€™s school-based PA from the perspective of school educators. Interviews were conducted with headteachers (n=4), PE-coordinators (n=4) and a deputy headteacher (n=1) and data thematically analysed using Nvivo software (version 10). Findings suggested that, at an organisational level headteachers were the predominant driving force in the promotion of PA opportunities, yet institutional barriers including low priority for PA and PE were perceived to negate delivery. At an interpersonal level, strategies to increase the delivery of school-based PA were developed, however poor teacher-coach relationships and significant others reduced PA promotion opportunities. Child PA was further negated through intrapersonal factors, including lack of PE-specific teacher training and varying teacher interest in PA and sport. To increase primary school childrenā€™s school-based PA, barriers and facilitators at the organisational, interpersonal and intrapersonal level must be considered and targeted, and researchers and schools should work in partnership to develop future interventions

    Collaborative Gaze Channelling for Improved Cooperation During Robotic Assisted Surgery

    The use of multiple robots for performing complex tasks is becoming a common practice for many robot applications. When different operators are involved, effective cooperation with anticipated manoeuvres is important for seamless, synergistic control of all the end-effectors. In this paper, the concept of Collaborative Gaze Channelling (CGC) is presented for improved control of surgical robots for a shared task. Through eye tracking, the fixations of each operator are monitored and presented in a shared surgical workspace. CGC permits remote or physically separated collaborators to share their intention by visualising the eye gaze of their counterparts, and thus recovers, to a certain extent, the information of mutual intent that we rely upon in a vis-Ć -vis working setting. In this study, the efficiency of surgical manipulation with and without CGC for controlling a pair of bimanual surgical robots is evaluated by analysing the level of coordination of two independent operators. Fitts' law is used to compare the quality of movement with or without CGC. A total of 40 subjects have been recruited for this study and the results show that the proposed CGC framework exhibits significant improvement (p<0.05) on all the motion indices used for quality assessment. This study demonstrates that visual guidance is an implicit yet effective way of communication during collaborative tasks for robotic surgery.     Effects of habitat and livestock on nest productivity of the Asian houbara Chlamydotis macqueenii in Bukhara Province, Uzbekistan

    To inform population support measures for the unsustainably hunted Asian houbara Chlamydotis macqueenii (IUCN Vulnerable) we examined potential habitat and land-use effects on nest productivity in the Kyzylkum Desert, Uzbekistan. We monitored 177 nests across different semi-arid shrub assemblages (clay-sand and salinity gradients) and a range of livestock densities (0ā€“80 km-2). Nest success (mean 51.4%, 95% CI 42.4ā€“60.4%) was similar across four years; predation caused 85% of those failures for which the cause was known, and only three nests were trampled by livestock. Nesting begins within a few weeks of arrival when food appears scarce, but later nests were more likely to fail owing to the emergence of a key predator, suggesting foraging conditions on wintering and passage sites may be important for nest productivity. Nest success was similar across three shrub assemblages and was unrelated to landscape rugosity, shrub frequency or livestock density, but was greater with taller mean shrub height (range 13ā€“67 cm) within 50 m. Clutch size (mean = 3.2 eggs) and per-egg hatchability in successful nests (87.5%) did not differ with laying date, shrub assemblage or livestock density. We therefore found no evidence that livestock density reduced nest productivity across the range examined, while differing shrub assemblages appeared to offer similar habitat quality. Asian houbara appear well-adapted to a range of semi-desert habitats and tolerate moderate disturbance by pastoralism. No obvious in situ mitigation measures arise from these findings, leaving regulation and control as the key requirement to render hunting sustainable

    The biogeography of South African terrestrial plant invasions

    Thousands of plant species have been introduced, intentionally and accidentally, to South Africa from many parts of the world. Alien plants are now conspicuous features of many South African landscapes and hundreds of species have naturalised (i.e. reproduce regularly without human intervention), many of which are also invasive (i.e. have spread over long distances). There is no comprehensive inventory of alien, naturalised, and invasive plants for South Africa, but 327 plant taxa, most of which are invasive, are listed in national legislation. We collated records of 759 plant taxa in 126 families and 418 genera that have naturalised in natural and semi-natural ecosystems. Over half of these naturalised taxa are trees or shrubs, just under a tenth are in the families Fabaceae (73 taxa) and Asteraceae (64); genera with the most species are Eucalyptus,Acacia, and Opuntia. The southern African Plant Invaders Atlas (SAPIA) provides the best data for assessing the extent of invasions at the national scale. SAPIA data show that naturalised plants occur in 83% of quarter-degree grid cells in the country. While SAPIA data highlight general distribution patterns (high alien plant species richness in areas with high native plant species richness and around the main human settlements), an accurate, repeatable method for estimating the area invaded by plants is lacking. Introductions and dissemination of alien plants over more than three centuries, and invasions over at least 120 years (and especially in the last 50 years) have shaped the distribution of alien plants in South Africa. Distribution patterns of naturalised and invasive plants define four ecologically-meaningful clusters or ā€œalien plant species assemblage zonesā€, each with signature alien plant taxa for which trait-environment interactions can be postulated as strong determinants of success. Some widespread invasive taxa occur in high frequencies across multiple zones; these taxa occur mainly in riparian zones and other azonal habitats,or depend on human-mediated disturbance, which weakens or overcomes the factors that determine specificity to any biogeographical region
