    Efficient melt stabilization of polyethylene with quercetin, a flavonoid type natural antioxidant

    The potential use of quercetin, a flavonoid type natural antioxidant, as a stabilizer in polyethylene was explored in this work. Its efficiency was compared to that of Irganox 1010, a hindered phenolic antioxidant used routinely in industrial practice, both in the presence and the absence of a phosphorous secondary stabilizer. The study was carried out with a Phillips type polyethylene and the efficiency of the additive packages was checked by various methods on samples produced by multiple extrusions. Quercetin content changed from 0 to 1000 ppm in 10 steps. The results showed that quercetin is a very effi-cient antioxidant. It prevents the formation of long chain branches already at a concentra-tion as small as 50 ppm and its dosage at 250 ppm renders the polymer sufficient long term residual stability. The efficiency of quercetin is considerably better than that of Irganox 1010, the hindered phenolic antioxidant used as reference stabilizer. The difference in efficiency might be explained with the dissimilar number of active –OH groups on the two molecules, but the stabilization mechanism of quercetin may be also different from that of I1010. Quercetin interacts with the phosphonite secondary stabilizer used, which improves dispersion and increases efficiency. Besides its advantages, quercetin has also some drawbacks (very high melting temperature, poor solubility in polyethylene and strong yellow color), which must be overcome before the substance can be used in practice

    Dithiooxamide Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode for the Studies of Non-Aqueous Media: Electrochemical Behaviors of Quercetin on the Electrode Surface

    Electrochemical oxidation of quercetin, as an important biological molecule, has been studied in non-aqueous media using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. To investigate the electrochemical properties of quercetin, an important flavonoid derivative, on a different surface, a new glassy carbon electrode has been developed using dithiooxamide as modifier in non-aqueous media. The surface modification of glassy carbon electrode has been performed within the 0.0 mV and +800 mV potential range with 20 cycles using 1 mM dithioxamide solution in acetonitrile. However, the modification of quercetin to both bare glassy carbon and dithiooxamide modified glassy carbon electrode surface was carried out in a wide +300 mV and +2,800 mV potential range with 10 cycles. Following the modification process, cyclic voltammetry has been used for the surface characterization in aqueous and non-aqueous media whereas electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been used in aqueous media. Scanning electron microscopy has also been used to support the surface analysis. The obtained data from the characterization and modification studies of dithioxamide modified and quercetin grafted glassy carbon electrode showed that the developed electrode can be used for the quantitative determination of quercetin and antioxidant capacity determination as a chemical sensor electrode

    Capillary electrophoresis fingerprinting and spectrophotometric determination of antioxidant potential for classification of Mentha

    In this work aqueous infusions from ten Mentha herbal samples (four different Mentha species and six hybrids of Mentha x piperita) and 20 different peppermint teas were screened by capillary electrophoresis with UV detection. The fingerprint separation was accomplished in a 25 mM borate background electrolyte with 10% methanol at pH 9.3. The total polyphenolic content in the extracts was determined spectrophotometrically at 765 nm by a Folin–Ciocalteu phenol assay. Total antioxidant activity was determined by scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical at 515 nm. The peak areas of 12 dominant peaks from CE analysis, present in all samples, and the value of total polyphenolic content and total antioxidant activity obtained by spectrophotometry was combined into a single data matrix and principal component analysis was applied. The obtained principal component analysis model resulted in distinct clusters of Mentha and peppermint tea samples distinguishing the samples according to their potential protective antioxidant effect. Principal component analysis, using a non-targeted approach with no need for compound identification, was found as a new promising tool for the screening of herbal tea products. © 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
