The First Release COSMOS Optical and Near-IR Data and Catalog
We present imaging data and photometry for the COSMOS survey in 15
photometric bands between 0.3um and 2.4um. These include data taken on the
Subaru 8.3m telescope, the KPNO and CTIO 4m telescopes, and the CFHT 3.6m
telescope. Special techniques are used to ensure that the relative photometric
calibration is better than 1% across the field of view. The absolute
photometric accuracy from standard star measurements is found to be 6%. The
absolute calibration is corrected using galaxy spectra, providing colors
accurate to 2% or better. Stellar and galaxy colors and counts agree well with
the expected values. Finally, as the first step in the scientific analysis of
these data we construct panchromatic number counts which confirm that both the

Wide-Field InfrarRed Survey Telescope-Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets WFIRST-AFTA 2015 Report
This report describes the 2014 study by the Science Definition Team (SDT) of
the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) mission. It is a space
observatory that will address the most compelling scientific problems in dark
energy, exoplanets and general astrophysics using a 2.4-m telescope with a
wide-field infrared instrument and an optical coronagraph. The Astro2010
Decadal Survey recommended a Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope as its top
priority for a new large space mission. As conceived by the decadal survey,
WFIRST would carry out a dark energy science program, a microlensing program to
determine the demographics of exoplanets, and a general observing program
utilizing its ultra wide field. In October 2012, NASA chartered a Science
Definition Team (SDT) to produce, in collaboration with the WFIRST Study Office
at GSFC and the Program Office at JPL, a Design Reference Mission (DRM) for an
implementation of WFIRST using one of the 2.4-m, Hubble-quality telescope
assemblies recently made available to NASA. This DRM builds on the work of the
earlier WFIRST SDT, reported by Green et al. (2012) and the previous WFIRST-2.4
DRM, reported by Spergel et. (2013). The 2.4-m primary mirror enables a mission
with greater sensitivity and higher angular resolution than the 1.3-m and 1.1-m
designs considered previously, increasing both the science return of the
primary surveys and the capabilities of WFIRST as a Guest Observer facility.
The addition of an on-axis coronagraphic instrument to the baseline design
enables imaging and spectroscopic studies of planets around nearby stars.Comment: This report describes the 2014 study by the Science Definition Team

COSMOS: Hubble Space Telescope Observations
The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high-resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8 deg^2) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-band F814W exposures with 50% completeness for sources 0.5" in diameter at I_(AB) = 26.0 mag. The ACS is a key part of the COSMOS survey, providing very high sensitivity and high-resolution (0.09" FWHM and 0.05" pixels) imaging and detecting a million objects. These images yield resolved morphologies for several hundred thousand galaxies. The small HST PSF also provides greatly enhanced sensitivity for weak-lensing investigations of the dark matter distribution
AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS: THE AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE
This study indicates that the three amnesties granted by Australia did not remove the presence of illegal aliens nor end the movement of persons into Australia who would become illegal residents. Instead, amnesty encouraged the growth of an illegal alien population. Some persons who were unable to get an immigrant visa decided to come to Australia and remain as an illegal alien living anonymously within an ethnic community. Illegal aliens expected that pressures from the ir ethnic communities would compel the government to grant another amnesty. Amnesty appears only to be a temporary expedient used by the government to appear humane and to relieve pressures from nonethnic Australians who want to end the presence of illegals and from ethnic communities who want their coethnics legalized. Amnesty turns out not to be a long-term solution to the existence of an illegal alien problem. Copyright 1986 by The Policy Studies Organization.
Dendritic voltage-gated K+ conductance gradient in pyramidal neurones of neocortical layer 5B from rats
Voltage-gated potassium channels effectively regulate dendritic excitability in neurones. It has been suggested that in the distal apical dendrite of layer 5B (L5B) neocortical pyramidal neurones, K+ conductances participate in active dendritic synaptic integration and control regenerative dendritic potentials. The ionic mechanism for triggering these regenerative potentials has yet to be elucidated. Here we used two-electrode voltage clamp (TEVC) to quantitatively record K+ conductance densities of a sustained K+ conductance in the soma and apical dendrite of L5B neurones of adult rats. We report that the somatic and proximal dendritic sustained voltage-gated K+ conductance density is more than 10-fold larger than previous estimates. The results obtained using TEVC were corroborated using current-clamp experiments in combination with compartmental modelling. Possible error sources, including inaccurate measurement of the passive membrane parameters and unknown axonal and basal dendritic conductance distributions, were shown not to distort the density estimation considerably. The sustained voltage-gated K+ conductance density was found to decrease steeply along the apical dendrite. The steep negative K+ conductance density gradient along the apical dendrite may help to define a distal, low-threshold region for amplification of distal synaptic input in L5B pyramidal neurones
