A new species of Enyalioides (Iguanidae: Hoplocercinae) from southwestern Ecuador
We describe a new species of Enyalioides from lowland cloud forests in southwestern Ecuador. This represents the third species in the genus known to occur west of the Andes in South America; the other two species are E. heterolepis and E. oshaughnessyi. Among other characters, the new species can be distinguished from other members in the genus by having small, keeled, paravertebrals; a series of skin folds on the lateral aspects of body and neck; size-homogeneous scales on body and limbs; distinct caudal segments; and an extensive dark patch on the gular region of adult males. Morphological similarity suggests that the new species, which we call E. touzeti, is closely related to E. oshaughnessyi.Describimos una especie nueva de Enyalioides del bosque nublado al suroccidente de Ecuador. Esta representa la tercera especie de este género que habita al occidente de los Andes en América del Sur; las otras dos especies occidentales son E. heterolepis y E. oshaughnessyi. La especie nueva se diferencia de otras especies del género por tener, entre otras características, paravertebrales pequeñas y quilladas, pliegues dermales a los lados del cuello y cuerpo, escamas homogéneas en el cuerpo y extremidades, segmentos caudales visibles, y un parche oscuro que cubre gran parte de la región gular en machos. Evaluating the capacity of human gut microorganisms to colonize the zebrafish larvae (Danio rerio)
Indexación: Scopus.In this study we evaluated if zebrafish larvae can be colonized by human gut microorganisms. We tested two strategies: (1) through transplantation of a human fecal microbiota and (2) by successively transplanting aerotolerant anaerobic microorganisms, similar to the colonization in the human intestine during early life. We used conventionally raised zebrafish larvae harboring their own aerobic microbiota to improve the colonization of anaerobic microorganisms. The results showed with the fecal transplant, that some members of the human gut microbiota were transferred to larvae. Bacillus, Roseburia, Prevotella, Oscillospira, one unclassified genus of the family Ruminococcaceae and Enterobacteriaceae were detected in 3 days post fertilization (dpf) larvae; however only Bacillus persisted to 7 dpf. Successive inoculation of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Clostridioides did not improve their colonization, compared to individual inoculation of each bacterial species. Interestingly, the sporulating bacteria Bacillus clausii and Clostridioides difficile were the most persistent microorganisms. Their endospores persisted at least 5 days after inoculating 3 dpf larvae. However, when 5 dpf larvae were inoculated, the proportion of vegetative cells in larvae increased, revealing proliferation of the inoculated bacteria and better colonization of the host. Specific Parameter-Free Global Optimization to Speed Up Setting and Avoid Factors Interactions
Meta-heuristics utilizing numerous parameters are more complicated than meta-heuristics with a couple of parameters for various reasons. In essence, the effort expected to tune the strategy-particular parameters is far more prominent as the quantity of parameters increases and furthermore, complex algorithms are liable for the presence of further parameter interactions. Jaya meta-heuristic does not involve any strategy-specific parameters and is a one-stage technique. It has demonstrated its effectiveness compared to major types of meta-heuristics and it introduces various points of interest, such as its easy deployment and set-up in industrial applications and its low complexity to be studied. In this work, a new meta-heuristic, Enhanced Jaya (EJaya) is proposed to overcome the inconsistency of Jaya in diverse situations, introducing coherent attraction and repulsion movements and restrained intensity for flight. Comparative results of EJaya in a set of benchmark problems including statistical tests show that it is feasible to increase the accuracy, scalability and exploitation capability of Jaya while keeping its specific parameter-free feature. EJaya is especially suitable for a priori undefined characteristics optimization functions or applications where the set-up time of the optimization process is critical and parameters tuning and interactions must be avoided
Prevalence and molecular identification of zoonotic Anisakis and Pseudoterranova species in fish destined to human consumption in Chile
Zoonotic larvae of the family Anisakidae found in several fish species represent a serious risk in public health since they may cause food-borne anisakidosis in humans. Chile has culinary preferences including eating raw fish in many traditional preparations. In the present study, a total of 180 fish specimens representing three different fish species, i.e., Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi), snoek (Thyrsites atun), and sea bream (Brama australis), were caught at central coast of Chile. Parasitological examination was performed on musculature and abdominal cavity for subsequent extraction and quantification of anisakid larvae. Estimation of infection parameters, such as prevalence, was performed indicating 100% (CI: 0.94-1.0) prevalence of anisakid L3 in Chilean hakes and snoeks. Moreover, sea breams reached a prevalence of 35% (CI: 0.23-0.48). Prevalence of anisakid larvae in muscle was also analyzed showing values of 18.6% (CI: 0.097-0.309) in Chilean hakes, 15% (CI: 0.07-0.26) in snoeks, and 1.7% (CI: 0-0.089) in sea breams. Meanwhile, prevalence of anisakid larvae in internal organs showed highest values for peritoneum (100% and 83.3%) for snoeks and Chilean hakes, respectively, for liver (96.7%) and gonads (86.6%) in Chilean hakes, and for intestine (98.3%) in snoeks. Molecular analysis of collected anisakid L3 unveiled presence of two potentially zoonotic nematode species, i.e., Pseudoterranova cattani and Anisakis pegreffii. P. cattani was found in Chilean hakes and snoeks being the first molecular host species report for Chilean snoeks. Besides, A. pegreffii was also identified in these species being the first molecular report on this regard. These findings are relevant for better understanding of epidemiology of anisakiasis in Chilean coasts and for public health issues considering potential risk of human population due to its culinary preferences in eating raw fish
Superradiance Emission and Its Thermal Decoherence in Lead Halide Perovskites Superlattices
Self-assembled nanocrystals (NCs) into superlattices (SLs) are alternative materials to polycrystalline films and single crystals, which can behave very differently from their constituents, especially when they interact coherently with each other. This work concentrates on the Superradiance (SR) emission observed in SLs formed by CsPbBr3 and CsPbBrI2 NCs. Micro-Photoluminescence spectra and transients in the temperature range 4–100 K are measured in SLs to extract information about the SR states and uncoupled domains of NCs. For CsPbBr3 SLs with mostly homogeneous SR lines (linewidth 1–5 meV), this work measures lifetimes as short as 160 ps, 10 times lower than the value measured in a thin film made with the same NCs, which is due to domains of near identical NCs formed by 1000 to 40 000 NCs coupled by dipole–dipole interaction. The thermal decoherence of the SR exciton state is evident above 25 K due to its coupling with an effective phonon energy of ≈8 meV. These findings are an important step toward understanding the SR emission enhancement factor and the thermal dephasing process in perovskite SLs.Financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Science (MICINN) through project no. Homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening in single perovskite nanocrystals investigated by micro-photoluminescence
Metal halides with perovskite crystalline structure have given rise to efficient optoelectronic and photonic devices. In the present work, we have studied the light emission properties of single CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 semiconductor perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), as the basis for a statistical analysis of micro-photoluminescence (micro-PL) spectra measured on tens of them. At room temperature, the linewidth extracted from PL spectra acquired in dense films of these nanocrystals is not very different from that of micro-PL measured in single nanocrystals. This means that the homogeneous linewidth due to exciton-phonon interaction is comparable or larger than the inhomogeneous effect associated to the micro-PL peak energy dispersion due to the nanocrystal size distribution defined by the chemical synthesis of the PNCs. Contrarily, we observe very narrow micro-PL lines in CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 PNCs at 4 K, in the range of 1–5 meV and 0.1–0.5 meV, respectively, because they are limited by spectral diffusion. Aging of PNCs under ambient conditions has been also studied by micro-PL and a clear reduction of their nanocube edge size in the order of the nm/day is deduced
Population Density, Poor Sanitation, and Enteric Infections in Nueva Santa Rosa, Guatemala
Poor sanitation could pose greater risk for enteric pathogen transmission at higher human population densities because of greater potential for pathogens to infect new hosts through environmentally mediated and person-to-person transmission. We hypothesized that incidence and prevalence of diarrhea, enteric protozoans, and soil-transmitted helminth infections would be higher in high-population-density areas compared with low-population-density areas, and that poor sanitation would pose greater risk for these enteric infections at high density compared with low density. We tested our hypotheses using 6 years of clinic-based diarrhea surveillance (2007–2013) including 4,360 geolocated diarrhea cases tested for 13 pathogens and a 2010 cross-sectional survey that measured environmental exposures from 204 households (920 people) and tested 701 stool specimens for enteric parasites. We found that population density was not a key determinant of enteric infection nor a strong effect modifier of risk posed by poor household sanitation in this setting
La Música Tradicional Chilena y su relevancia en los procesos de aprendizaje y enseñanza de algunos casos de la comuna de Talca
91 p.La Música Tradicional Chilena ha sido considerada por la sociedad como pariente pobre entendiendo a la tradición clásica europea como referente de calidad musical. Algo contradictorio respecto a lo que el ámbito educacional y la ley pretenden promover desde el currículum oficial; y a las implicancias de los procesos de construcción identitaria que trasuntan estas valoraciones. Desde hace algunas décadas en lo que respecta a educación formal, el Folclor, como es comúnmente conocido, ha sido considerado en los contenidos obligatorios de los planes y programas del Ministerio de Educación. La aclaración de conceptos relacionados a este tema, se destaca como uno de los contenidos fundamentales de aporte de esta investigación más allá de ser un marco conceptual formal requerido, ya que la diferenciación, por ejemplo, entre los términos de Música Tradicional Chilena y Música Folclórica, es desconocida por los docentes a cargo de estos procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje. El objetivo principal es descubrir y describir la relevancia de la Música Tradicional Chilena, desde la constatación de su apreciación, necesidad, conocimiento y la identificación que una parte de la población, según los alcances de una tesis de pregrado reconoce. Cuál es el espacio que se le da en la comunidad escolar; así como por qué los profesores debiesen enseñarla a sus estudiantes, y su reflejo en la identificación con el patrimonio cultural de nuestro país, son temas estructurales que se desarrollarán en el presente trabajo. Desde el marco de un estudio de caso instrumental, esta investigación se centra en la revisión bibliográfica y la recolección de datos involucrando actores del medio educativo escolar formal y no formal, de distintos niveles, que influyen directamente en procesos formativos en el tema y que han aportado con opiniones, información y descripciones respecto a cómo se está desarrollando la enseñanza de la Música Tradicional Chilena. Con todo, la pretensión es comprender el caso con el fin de inferir posibles líneas definidas de desarrollo en procesos de formación inicial docente, en concordancia con los fundamentos que la posicionan, y su relación con fenómenos como la globalización, decisiones políticas nacionales, culturales, familiares y pedagógicas
Exploring the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of gold nanostructures embedded around nanogaps at wafer scale: Simulations and experiments
A unique way of converting free space light into a local electromagnetic field in small spaces is via metallic nanostructuring. In this work fabrication, experimental characterization and simulation of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active specimens based on Au nanostructures are discussed. We used displacement Talbot lithography (DTL) to fabricate silicon nano-wedge substrates with Au nanostructures embedded around their apices. After the ion beam etching process, a nanogap is introduced between two Au nanostructures templated over nano-wedges, yielding specimens with SERS characteristics. The Au nanostructures and the nanogaps have symmetric and asymmetric configurations with respect to the wedges. With this nanofabrication method, various wafer-scale specimens were fabricated with highly controllable nanogaps with a size in the order of 6 nm for symmetric gaps and 8 nm for asymmetric gaps. SERS characteristics of these specimens were analyzed experimentally by calculating their analytical enhancement factor (AEF). According to finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, the Raman enhancement arises at the narrow gap due to plasmonic resonances, yielding a maximum AEF of 6.9 × 106. The results highlight the SERS activity of the nanostructures and ultimately comply with reliable substrates for practical applications
