This work introduces a new synthesis procedure for obtaining homogeneous silica hybrid aerogels with carbon nanotube contents up to 2.50 wt.%. The inclusion of nanotubes in the highly porous silica matrix was performed by a two-step sol–gel process, resulting in samples with densities below 80 mg/cm3. The structural analyses (N2 physisorption and SEM) revealed the hierarchical structure of the porous matrix formed by nanoparticles arranged in clusters of 100 and 300 nm in size, specific surface areas around 600 m2/g and porous volumes above 4.0 cm3/g. In addition, a relevant increase on the mechanical performance was found, and an increment of 50% for the compressive strength and 90% for the maximum deformation were measured by uniaxial compression. This reinforcement was possible thanks to the outstanding dispersion of the CNT within the silica matrix and the formation of Si–O–C bridges between nanotubes and silica matrix, as suggested by FTIR. Therefore, the original synthesis procedure introduced in this work allows the fabrication of highly porous hybrid materials loaded with carbon nanotubes homogeneously distributed in the space, which remain available for a variety of technological applications

Focusedonourinteresttodevelopnovelantiparasisticagents, thepresentstudywasaimed to evaluate the biological activity of an extract of Laurencia johnstonii collected in Baja California Sur, Mexico, against an Acantamoeba castellanii Neff strain. Bioassay-guided fractionation allowed us to identify the amoebicidal diastereoisomers α-bromocuparane (4) and α-isobromocuparane (5). Furthermore, bromination of the inactive laurinterol (1) and isolaurinterol (2) yielded four halogenated derivatives, (6)–(9), which improved the activity of the natural sesquiterpenes. Among them, the most active compound was 3α-bromojohnstane (7), a sesquiterpene derivative which possesses a novel carbon skeleton johnstane

The present article has the aim of analyzing the habits of reading which were showed by students during a Navarra school random (cross-section example) which contains the different levels of our educative system: one hundred and seventy-four primary students, five hundred and thirty-six (compulsory) secondary students and three hundred and thirty-seven students of high school graduate, one thousand and forty-seven students from nine to seventeen years old, in all. All of them were provided in a collective way with a questionnaire about habits of reading, in their educative centres. Their fond of reading and their reading behaviour were the main variables analysed. Furthermore, it was evaluated other variables in order to know their relation with main variables: Watching television in a mode rare way, the encouragement of their parents and their teachers to read, the reading understanding and the oral understanding, their intellectual ability, the logical reasoning and the memory. The age and the sex of the participants were considered, too. After the statistical analyse, it was verified that the older the students are, the less habits of reading they have. Girls show more habits of reading than boys and it can be seen a correlation between the habits on reading and other variables: read understanding, watching television in a moderate way and the encouragement of the parents and teachers to read

Microorganisms and hygiene habits: Is there more to be learned in Infant Education by means of worksheets?

The hygiene habits and the knowledge that a group of 69 students of Early Childhood Education (4-6 years old) have about microorganisms is presented in this work. The possible influence on them of two different didactic proposals (traditional -control group- and inquiry-based learning -experimental group-) is analysed. The information was obtained at three different moments -pre didactic intervention, post intervention and two months later-. The used tolls were children's drawings, an oral and individually applied questionnaire with closed and open questions and a questionnaire addressed to the families. Indications are detected that the students recognize the microorganisms as living beings. After the intervention, no statistically significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups. Two months later an improvement was observed in the control group with respect to some hygiene habits and in the experimental group the process of investigation with petri dishes was recalled. These results open new research questions

Oxidative stress influence on renal dysfunction in patients with obstructive jaundice: A case and control prospective study

    Get PDF
Obstructive Jaundice (OJ) is associated with a significant risk of developing acute renal failure (ARF). The involvement of oxidative stress in the development of cholestasis has been demonstrated in different experimental models. However, its role in the morbidity of human cholestasis is far to be elucidated. The aim of the study was the evaluation of oxidative stress markers in blood from patients with OJ and its relation to complications and benign/malignant evolution of cholestasis. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study of 105 patients with OJ and 34 control subjects were included. Several markers of liver function and oxidative stress, such as lipoperoxides (LPO), as well as reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were assessed. Results: The patients with OJ showed a marked increase in plasma levels of LPO, SOD and GSH, while GSH-Px levels were decreased. The increase in lipid peroxidation products and the depletion of SOD activity in blood were also related to renal dysfunction. The highest level of LPO was associated with malignant etiology of the disease. The logistic regression analysis showed that the age of the patient and the levels of LPO in blood were predictors of renal dysfunction in OJ patients. Conclusions: This study demonstrates a correlation between oxidative stress and renal dysfunction patients with OJ.Instituto de Salud Carlos III PI02/015
