Foreclosing Competition through Access Charges and Price Discrimination
This article analyzes competition between two asymmetric networks, an incumbent and a new entrant. Networks compete in non-linear tariffs and may charge different prices for on-net and off-net calls. Departing from cost-based access pricing allows the incumbent to foreclose the market in a profitable way. If the incumbent benefits from customer inertia, then it has an incentive to insist in the highest possible access markup even if access charges are reciprocal and even in the absence of actual switching costs. If instead the entrant benefits from customer activism, then foreclosure is profitable only when switching costs are large enough.Access Pricing, Entry Deterrence, Interconnection, Network Competition, Two-way Access
Beyond forgiveness and suicidal behaviour in adolescence: the moderating role of gender
With the development of positive psychology, forgiveness has received increasing attention among psychologists from different social science fields . Empirical evidences have suggested associations between forgiveness and suicidal ideation and behaviours, but moderator’s role of gender has been scarcely studied. The aim of the present study was to test the role of gender as a potential moderating factor in the relationship between forgiveness and suicidal behaviour in adolescence. A total of 586 Spanish adolescents from three different high school centres took part in this study. Their average age was 15.51 (SD= 1.17) and 51.2% were men. We conducted moderation analyses and used age and personality factors as control variables. First, we found negative association between forgiveness and risk suicide. Moreover, results showed that gender moderated the relationship between forgiveness and suicidal ideation. Specifically, males compared to females were found to show significantly higher tendency of suicidal behaviour depending on their level of forgiveness. Thus, males who showed higher scores on forgiveness tend to report lower levels of suicidal behaviour, whereas males who reported lower scores on forgiveness showed greater levels of risk suicide. Our findings suggest that forgiveness may operate as a key buffering factor against suicidal risk underlying the importance of examining gender differences in this association. These findings provide therapeutic targets to reduce risk of suicide in this high-risk group of adolescent males with lower levels of forgiveness. Our results are discussed in terms of the need of using gender perspectives in positive psychology intervention programs.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
Development of an Augmented Reality musical instrument
Nowadays, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are concepts of which people
are becoming more and more aware of due to their application to the video-game
industry (speceially in the case of VR). Such raise is partly due to a decrease in
costs of Head Mounted Displays, which are consequently becoming more and more
accessible to the public and developers worldwide.
All of these novelties, along with the frenetic development of Information Technologies
applied to essentially, all markets; have also made digital artists and manufacturers
aware of the never-ending interaction possibilities these paradigms provide
and a variety of systems have appeared, which offer innovative creative capabilities.
Due to the personal interest of the author in music and the technologies surrounding
its creation by digital means, this document covers the application of the Virtuality-
Reality-Continuum (VR and AR) paradigms to the field of interfaces for the musical
expression. More precisely, it covers the development of an electronic drumset
which integrates Arduino-compatible hardware with a 3D visualisation application
(developed based on Unity) to create a complete functioning instrument musical
instrument,
The system presented along the document attempts to leverage three-dimensional visual
feedback with tangible interaction based on hitting, which is directly translated
to sound and visuals in the sound generation application. Furthermore, the present
paper provides a notably deep study of multiple technologies and areas that are ultimately
applied to the target system itself. Hardware concerns, time requirements,
approaches to the creation of NIMEs (New Interfaces for Musical Expression), Virtual
Musical Instrument (VMI) design, musical-data transmission protocols (MIDI
and OSC) and 3D modelling constitute the fundamental topics discussed along the
document.
At the end of this paper, conclusions reflect on the difficulties found along the
project, the unfulfilled objectives and all deviations from the initial concept that
the project suffered during the development process. Besides, future work paths
will be listed and depicted briefly and personal comments will be included as well as
humble pieces of advice targeted at readers interested in facing an ambitious project
on their own.
Dealing with teachers’ role stressors and depressive symptomatology: does gender impact on the buffering effect of emotion regulation ability?
Certain work-related stressors as role ambiguity and role conflict have been traditionally linked to negative outcomes such as mental health problems. Previous studies have focused on the moderating effect of personal resources in the association between role stressors and work attitudes. Emotion regulation ability (ERA) has showed robust associations with numerous mental health outcomes, with significant gender differences in this relationship.. The purpose of our study was twofold. Firstly, to examine the moderating effect of ERA in the association among role ambiguity/conflict and depressive symptomatology in a teacher sample. Secondly, we aimed to test whether gender would affect the impact of ERA. Participants were 337 Spanish teachers (54.89% were female) from different grade level taught in Malaga. Results showed that ERA moderated the relationship between role ambiguity and depressive symptoms, whereas did not moderate the effect of role conflict. Indeed, gender-specific analysis revealed a three-way interaction of role ambiguity, ERA and gender on depressive symptomatology showing a significant moderation effect only for males. These results suggest underlying processes by which ERA would differently buffer the association between role clarity and depressive symptoms in teachers. Our resultsmay shed some light on showing on testing gender-specific models including work-related factors, emotional abilities, mental health and well-being outcomes in teaching. Finally, these findings might provide guidance in developing further stress management programmes and emotional training considering gender perspectives.
In this article the concept of cultural percolation is used to describe and study the introduction of values of for-profit organizations in the Third Sector. We propose a theoretical frame that includes theories on organizacional culture, the relational theory of society and the new institutionalism. This article specifies several hypotheses and the methodology to verify them, and presents the results of the research carried out at three levels: First, at macro level, the cultural percolation is observed in two types of organizational behavior; second, at micro level, ideological factors which obstruct the cultural percolation are described; and third, at meso level, the cultural percolation are influenced by material factors. The analysis is based on secundary data of 87 Developmental Non Governmental Organizations and primary analysis of data from 28 semiestructurated intervews and a survey to the personnel of 24 organziations
Modeling, control and design of AC microgrids in islanded mode
Àmbit de les TICThe present doctoral thesis is focused on the analysis and design of control strategies for the secondary control layer of islanded AC microgrids without the use of communications. The work is submitted as a compendium of publications, composed by journals and international conference papers.
The first contribution is a control strategy for the secondary control layer based on a switchable configuration, that does not require the use of communications. For stability analysis purposes, a closed-loop system modeling is presented, which is also used to determine design considerations for the control parameters.
The second contribution is a complementary control strategy that improves the frequency regulation of the previous proposed control, using a dynamic droop gain in the primary layer. For this purpose, a time protocol that drives the variable parameters is proposed which guarantees an effectively reduction of the maximum frequency error without relying on complex techniques, maintaining the simplicity of the basis strategy and the non-use of communications.
The third contribution is a multi-layer hierarchical control scheme that is composed by a droop-based primary layer, a time-driven secondary layer and an optimized power dispatch tertiary layer. The proposed control guarantees an excellent performance in terms of frequency restoration and power sharing.
The fourth contribution is an improved secondary control layer strategy without communications, which presents superior operating performance compared with the previous proposals. The scheme is based on a event-driven operation of a parameter-varying filter which ensures perfect active power sharing and controllable accuracy for frequency restoration. A complete modeling that considers the topology of the MG and the electrical interaction between the DGs is derived for the stability analysis and to determine design guidelines for the key control parameters.
For the purpose of analyzing and verifying the operational performance of the control schemes, an experimental MG was implemented, where selected tests were carried out. The obtained results are discussed and its relation with the doctoral thesis objectives analyzed. The thesis ends presenting conclusions and future research lines.
The elastic view of the structural continuum versus the strength of material analysis
The appearance of the graphic computing has allowed to deal with analysis of two and threedimensional
structural continuum by means of mechanic models that have the capacity to understand
the simplest and more complex behaviors between local geometries that classic methodologies are
not able to describe.
This fact involves the re-adoption of the Elasticity Theory and the prominence of the stresses against
the comfortable view to simplify them along one of the geometry dimensions (e.g. one of the beam
edges) to convert them into strains. The Strength of Materials concepts and the vectorial calculus
might become outdated nowadays.
Moreover, the Finite Element Method used in this study allows facing structural geometries with
geometric and functional complexity. This would not be possible with classic methods without
introducing important simplifications
