In this paper we compare the thesis of underdetermination of theories with the thesis of indeterminacy of translation. Drawing upon this comparison, we argue that, in the context of Quine’s philosophy, the thesis of indeterminacy of translation can only be maintained if it is taken as establishing an indeterminacy in the logical form of sentences. Consequently, we contend that Quine lacks a solid argument for indeterminacy of translation.

Los resultados muestran aumentos en la tasa de riesgo de pobreza y en la brecha de pobreza e indican la conveniencia de impulsar políticas sociales y reforzar la protección social, combinadas con políticas económicas de fomento de empleo.[Abstract]: From several statistical sources, mainly from the Inquiry of Life conditions of families (Galician Statistical Institute, I.G.E.), an analysis of poverty and inequality in Galicia it was undertaken, for the period 2007-2011, with a bigger territorial detail than the provincial to analyse the socioeconomic context. It is explained the current situation and recent evolution of the main indicators of poverty and inequality for the 20 regional areas of Galicia, through a study based on the criteria and benchmarks set by the EU in the Council of Laeken in 2001, among others. They are discussed the underlying factors behind poverty and inequality in those regions of Galicia, through multivariate analysis techniques. Results showed increases in the headcount poverty rate and the poverty gap and they suggest the desirability of boost social policies and reinforce social protection combined with economic policies for employment promotion.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.ECO). Carpooling systems for commuting among teachers: an expert panel analysis of their barriers and incentives

    Get PDF
Sustainable mobility is a current challenge in our society. Research shows that carpooling systems are potential solutions that could mitigate environmental pollution and urban congestion and provide cost savings for their users. Despite their potential benefits, the levels of carpooling practices among some occupations could be improved. Teachers are suitable for carpooling experiences due to their specific working conditions (e.g., timetables, destinations changes, path matches); however, there is no research solely focused on teachers. Thus, the current research aimed to analyze the barriers and incentives for teachers using carpooling systems for commuting. A panel member was selected following the staticized group technique. Panelists were surveyed to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of carpooling. Results showed that fuel savings were considered by the expert panel as the most important incentive for carpooling. For short distances, carpooling was not considered the best commuting option. Additionally, the increase in travel time and loss of personal independence were identified as relevant barriers. Based on the opinions of experts, it can be concluded that carpooling barriers outweigh the incentives for the commuting of teachers. To promote carpooling practices, institutional mobility plans with advantages for carpoolers could improve the teachers’ perceptions about carpooling. Future carpooling strategies should consider these results to promote incentives and address the identified barriers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Coastal retreat and sedimentation during the Last 3000 years. Atlantic coast of NW Spain

    Get PDF
During the last glaciation, thick nival and periglacial sediments buried large sectors of the NW coast of Spain. The sediments were mostly eroded by the rising sea level during the Holocene, but in several places they remain, forming sedimentary cliffs. Radiocarbon dates obtained at the topmost layers of these cliffs prove that continental sedimentation was active until very recent times, followed by a retreat of the cliffs. During the first stages of the transgression, the erosion of the cliffs and the changes in the coastal system were controlled by the rising sea-level. Once the sea-level stabilized, the exhumation of inherited landforms, the supply of sediments, and a continuous continental sedimentation became the main factors. The last stages of cliff retreat were almost synchronous with the sedimentation of the upper layers of the deposits.S

Proposal for an Institutional Carpooling System among workers from the public-education sector

    Get PDF
Car journeys to work represent a high percentage of daily mobility. Carpooling can be an efficient alternative for managing this transport demand. Carpooling benefits are not limited to reducing emissions and energy consumption: users can also benefit in the reduction in travel costs and travel time using high-occupancy vehicle lanes, as well as reducing commuting stress. The organization of such a system is not easy to carry out individually. Institutions and companies with a high number of employees are suitable for carpooling initiatives, and the education sector holds a high number of workers. Considering the large number of teachers and the fact that many of them are regular drivers, the sector presents an opportunity to design a formal carpooling transport system. This paper presents the design of a proposal for a carpooling system among workers from the education sector in the region of Andalusia, Spain. The system yielded relevant benefits such as cost savings, emissions reductions, and a high number of potential users. The designed system can potentially improve transport conditions for workers in commuting displacements and reduce occupational traffic accidents.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Resumen de la comunicación presentada en PIC2015 – the 14th International Congress on Combustion By-Products and Their Health Effects, Umeå, Sweden, 14-17 June 2015.The aim of the present study was to assess the emission of di2erent persistent organic pollutants from a cement plant over a period of one year, under normal operating conditions. In this way, a Dioxin Monitoring System (a long-term sampling device manufactured by Monitoring Systems) was installed in the clinker kiln stack of the cement plant, located in the vicinity of the University of Alicante. The factory has a production capacity of 150 t/h of clinker and uses petroleum coke as primary fuel, but also alternative fuels such as SRF (solid recovered fuel), ASR (automotive shredder residue), sewage sludge, waste tires, and meat and bone meal wastes, with an enerKy substitution level of about 40 %. The study consisted of a total of 13 samples, namely: • Ten samples collected in 3Q4 week periods, for the determination of brominated dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs). • Three samples collected during one-week periods, for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).Support for this work was provided by the following projects: • Ministry of Science and Innovation (Spain): CTQ2011Q23618. • Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Spain): CTQ2013Q41006QR. • Valencian Community Government (Spain): PROMETEOII/2014/007

The safety and efficacy of the tetanus vaccine intramuscularly versus subcutaneously in anticoagulated patients: a randomized clinical trial

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: In patients treated with oral anticoagulants, subcutaneous injections of anti-tetanus vaccine are usually recommended to reduce the risk of bleeding, although the effectiveness of the vaccine has only been proven for intramuscular injection. The objective of this study was to compare the safety and efficacy of intramuscular and subcutaneous injections of tetanus-diphtheria vaccine in patients treated with oral anticoagulants. METHODS/DESIGN: We present a prospective, double blinded, clinical trial comparing two groups of patients with oral anticoagulants: one group was administered tetanus-diphtheria vaccine by intramuscular injection, while the other was administered the same vaccine by subcutaneous injection. Allocation to each group was randomized and the duration of the study was six years. STUDY POPULATION: all patients treated with oral anticoagulants, who had been administered with at least one dose of vaccine, at 15 Health Centres in Vigo (Spain), and who agreed to participate in the study. The sample size was 115 patients in each group. The main variables for the safety analysis were the measurement of the brachial diameter, the appearance of basic injuries at the vaccine administration site, the appearance of pain and systemic reactions. The variable used for the efficacy analysis was a significant increase in the titres of anti-tetanus toxoid antibodies. An Intention-to-treat analysis will be performed. Details will be classified according to the administration route, while within each group a 3-tiered stratification will be defined by the administered number of doses. As a measure of association, relative risk will be estimated; the reduction of relative risk will also measured. For safety and to control the confounder effect, a logistic regression analysis will be carried out. As a measure of impact the reduction of absolute risk in relation to the total number of patients to be treated and the Number Needed to Treat will be estimated.CONSORT 2010 guidelines were applied for reporting parallel group randomised trials. DISCUSSION: The most significant difficulties on the project are related to the large number of participating centres, required to obtain a viable study population sample size, and the coordination given the scattering of the centres and researchers.
