    Trend analysis in two standard growth models

    This paper analyzes the trend processes characterized by two standard growth models using simple econometrics. The first model is the basic neoclassical growth model that postulates a deterministic trend for output. The second model is the Uzawa-Lucas model that postulates a stochastic trend for output. The aim is to understand how the different trend processes for output assumed by these two standard growth models determine the ability of each model to explain the observed trend processes of other macroeconomic variables such as consumption and investment. The results show that the two models reproduce the output trend process. Moreover, the results show that the basic growth model captures properly the consumption trend process, but fails in characterizing the investment trend process.     Cyclical Features of Uzawa-Lucas Endogenous Growth Model

    This paper analyzes the cyclical properties of a generalized version of Uzawa-Lucas endogenous growth model. We study the dynamic features of different cyclical components of this model characterized by a variety of decomposition methods. The decomposition methods considered can be classified in two groups. On the one hand, we consider three statistical filters: the Hodrick-Prescott filter, the Baxter-King filter and Gonzalo-Granger decomposition. On the other hand, we use four model-based decomposition methods. The latter decomposition procedures share the property that the cyclical components obtained by these methods preserve the log-linear approximation of the Euler-equation restrictions imposed by the agent’s intertemporal optimization problem. The paper shows that both model dynamics and model performance substantially vary across decomposition methods. A parallel exercise is carried out with a standard real business cycle model. The results should help researchers to better understand the performance of Uzawa-Lucas model in relation to standard business cycle models under alternative definitions of the business cycle.endogenous growth, decomposition methods, cyclical features

    Neighborhood based rough sets are important generalizations of the classical rough sets of Pawlak, as neighborhood operators generalize equivalence classes. In this article, we introduce nine neighborhood based operators and we study the partial order relations between twenty-two different neighborhood operators obtained from one covering. Seven neighborhood operators result in new rough set approximation operators. We study how these operators are related to the other fifteen neighborhood based approximation operators in terms of partial order relations, as well as to seven non-neighborhood-based rough set approximation operators

    Stochastic Stokes' drift of a flexible dumbbell

    We consider the stochastic Stokes drift of a flexible dumbbell. The dumbbell consists of two isotropic Brownian particles connected by a linear spring with zero natural length, and is advected by a sinusoidal wave. We find an asymptotic approximation for the Stokes drift in the limit of a weak wave, and find good agreement with the results of a Monte Carlo simulation. We show that it is possible to use this effect to sort particles by their flexibility even when all the particles have the same diffusivity.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

    Antigenic variation in vector-borne pathogens.

    Several pathogens of humans and domestic animals depend on hematophagous arthropods to transmit them from one vertebrate reservoir host to another and maintain them in an environment. These pathogens use antigenic variation to prolong their circulation in the blood and thus increase the likelihood of transmission. By convergent evolution, bacterial and protozoal vector-borne pathogens have acquired similar genetic mechanisms for successful antigenic variation. Borrelia spp. and Anaplasma marginale (among bacteria) and African trypanosomes, Plasmodium falciparum, and Babesia bovis (among parasites) are examples of pathogens using these mechanisms. Antigenic variation poses a challenge in the development of vaccines against vector-borne pathogens

    Hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia: Reduced HLA-DR expression in monocyte subpopulations from diabetes patients

    Immune dysfunction contributes to the higher risk of communicable and non-communicable diseases among diabetics. HLA-DR expression is a robust marker of immune competence in mononuclear cells, including antigen presentation to CD4 lymphocytes. Given the high prevalence of obesity among diabetics, we evaluated the independent association between hyperglycemia and dyslipidemias with respect to HLA-DR expression in blood monocytes from type 2 diabetes patients. The monocytes from individuals with (n=16) or without diabetes (n=25) were phenotyped by flow cytometry to assess the differential expression of HLA-DR on their three subpopulations (classical, intermediate and non-classical monocytes). Diabetes was independently associated with lower HLA-DR expression across all monocyte subpopulations (p \u3c0.05). Blood triglycerides were associated with further HLA-DR depression (interaction p \u3c0.002). Cholesterols counterbalanced the reductive effect, with CD36, a receptor for oxidized cholesterol, correlating with HLA-DR (rho=0.373; p= 0.016). Future studies are warranted to elucidate the complex interactions between hyperglycemia and dyslipidemias on antigen presentation in diabetic monocytes
