DRIVER PREFERENCE CONCERNING IN-CAR ROUTE GUIDANCE AND NAVIGATION SYSTEM MAPS FOR DRIVERS WITH COLOR VISION DEFICIENCY

    Get PDF
In-car Route Guidance and Navigation Systems (RGNS) are used to help drivers navigate. These maps have mainly been designed to accommodate drivers with normal color vision. However, the color perception of people with normal color vision differs from that of people with color vision deficiency. When navigating, understanding certain kinds of information presented by RGNS maps can be a more complex task for colorblind drivers and traffic safety may be impacted negatively. An important aspect related to the graphic design of RGNS maps is the use of a good combination of colors to improve map legibility. Cartographic representations with good legibility aid drivers in comprehending information and making appropriate decisions during driving tasks. This paper evaluates driver preference for RGNS maps designed for drivers with color vision deficiency. A total of 14 subjects participated in an experiment performed in a parked car. Maps were designed to accommodate red-blinds and green-blinds by using a color simulator and principles of perceptual grouping and figure-ground segregation. Based on the results, we conclude that the map grouping symbols representing car and direction arrows in blue segregated from the route in black was more acceptable to drivers compared to other combinations. It is recommended that RGNS should offer a specific graphic design to support drivers with color vision deficiency in navigating

Noise from the information communication process produced by the interfaces of navigation systems has overloaded drivers' cognitive processing systems and increased the probability of traffic accidents. This work evaluates the usability of maps of different scales in a prototype route guidance and navigation system. The maps were designed on basic cartographic communication principles, such as perceptive grouping and figure-ground segregation, as well drivers’ requirements for performing a tactical task. Two different scales were adopted, 1:3,000 and 1:6,000, and the maps implemented in the prototype. A total of 52 subjects (26 males and 26 females) participated in an experiment performed in a driving simulator. The maps describe an urban route composed of 13 simple and complex maneuvers. The drivers’ mental workload was measured in terms of visual demand, navigational error and subjective preference. Results reveal that the usability of maps is influenced by map scale variation, and this is related to maneuver complexity. Also, an association between drivers’ visual demand and gender was found, and this was related to drivers’ spatial ability. More implications are presented and discussed

Usability issues of maps presented in-car Route Guidance and Navigation System (RGNS) may result in serious impacts on traffic safety. To obtain effective RGNS, evaluation of ‘user satisfaction’ with the system has played a prominent role, since designers can quantify drivers’ acceptance about presented information. An important variable related to design of RGNS interfaces refers to select appropriate scale for maps, since it interferes on legibility of maps. Map with good legibility may support drivers comprehend information easily and take decisions during driving task quickly. This paper evaluates drivers’ preference for scales used in maps of RGNS. A total of 52 subjects participated of an experiment performed in a parked car. Maps were designed at four different scales 1:1,000, 1:3,000, 1:6,000 and 1:10,000 for a route composed of 13 junctions. Map design was based on cartographic communication principles, such as perceptive grouping and figure-ground segregation. Based on studies cases, we conclude intermediate scales (1:6,000 and 1:3,000) were more acceptable among drivers compared to large scales (1:1,000) and small (1:10,000). RGNS should select scales for maps which supports drivers to quickly identify direction of the maneuver and, simultaneously, get information about surroundings of route. More results are presented and implications discusse

AbstractThis work developed software with the Java language to determine the photothermal unit depending on degree days. Using the software is the most reliable, and facilitates studies using photothermal unit. To construct the software were first determined parameters necessary inputs for the calculations is the number of data to be studied, the minimum, average and maximum temperatures, latitude, day and temperature range to which you want to verify that is the minimum core temperature. For each value of minimum basal Temperature (Tb) was calculated by the chosen degree days and UF, to then determine the mean and standard deviation. With this we calculated the coefficient of variation (cv) for each chosen Tb. After these calculations the software builds a graph for analysis of results, so the software does great contribution since it optimizes and automates the calculation of the minimum core temperature. , o software gera um gráfico para a análise dos resultados

The presence of many biologically active components makes pumpkins extremely attractive to the phytochemical manufacturing industry. Studies have demonstrated that the oil extracted from the seeds has different biological activities. This study aimed to determine the fatty acid composition and total tocopherol content of the pumpkin seed oil (Cucurbita moschata – Jacarezinho cultivar) extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO2) and hexane/isopropanol. The fatty acids composition and content of total tocopherols were determined by GC, GC/FID, HPLC, respectively. We also evaluated in vitro schistosomicidal activities of the crude oil, which have been described with anti-parasitic activities. Sc-CO2 extracted pumpkin seed oil, with a maximum yield of 24.3 ± 0.4%, much higher than hexane/isopropanol extraction (8.3 ± 2.7%). Was not observe differences between the non-polar compounds present in the oil extracted by both methods. In the seed oil, unsaturated acids are dominant (oleic and linoleic). The results indicate that the oil has an excellent quality, with high contents of unsaturated fatty acids (73% of total fatty acids) and total tocopherols (14 mg100g-1 of oil). Although popularly reported as anti-parasitic activities caused no mortality, tegumental alterations or significant decrease in motor activity in all adult parasites. Sc-CO2 was able to extract pumpkin seed oil with a much higher yield than extraction with hexane/isopropanol and no differences were observe between the non-polar compounds present in the oil extracted by both methods. The oil is popularly used as an antiparasitic agent but in this study did not show antiparasitary actividies

The observation of people looking for squares, streets, climbing walls, benches, walls and ramps around the city to have fun and exercise represents a new context of sports practice that this research seeks to reveal. The objective of this study was to recognize the places and actors of skateboarding, climbing and slakline practices and their motivations for the search of these sports. Exploratory descriptive research was used with 46 subjects, 16 climbers, 20 skaters and 10 slakliners, from the city of São Paulo, who answered a questionnaire developed specifically for these activities. The results showed that: There is predominance of males among the participants, showing a prejudice that still persists in sports practice. Climbers have a higher average age than others, perhaps due to the need for more expensive equipment, greater risks of practice and the need for courses to learn. Skaters on average have been practicing for more time, probably because the skate culture is older and consolidated in São Paulo. It is observed that in slakline all practice less than three years showing that it is a modality still recent in the national scenario. The participants of the research affirm to have learned alone, or with friends and family, evidencing in this aspect that the Physical Education is not considered like initiation. The subjects point out the gain of physical, mental and social benefits in their lives and their intention to continue the practice by quality of life, fun, physical and psychological evolution. Only 10.8% claim to compete, which shows that Extreme Sports are considered from the perspective of voluntary participation. It is concluded that Extreme Sports are being incorporated into the routine of the people, adding a new contour to the body culture, in a search for overcoming, facing challenges, control of risk, pleasure, and quality of life. There is evidence that there is a gap between the graduation in Physical Education professionals and these new practices
