Status of SuperNEMO experiment and last results of NEMO3
International audienceSuperNEMO is a next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment with a design capability to reach a half-life sensitivity of 1026 years corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of ⟨mββ⟩ < 50 - 100 meV. This detector has the unique capability to identify the electrons allowing to reduce drastically the background coming from the natural radioactivity. It measures also all kinematical parameters (individual energy of the ellectrons and angular distribution) and in case of signal it could allow to determine the process leading to neutrinoless double beta decay. We will present the status of SuperNEMO construction and the improvements foreseen compared to NEMO-3. The R&D started in 2007 and today all the requirements are achievable. The collaboration is now equipped with very sensitive complementary detectors (for radon: diffusion apparatus, concentration line and emanation tank and for radiopurity: BiPo, HPGe...). Underground early commissioning of one quarter of tracker and one brick of calorimeter is expected by the end of this year and data takin is expected second semester 2016. We will also present the last last esults from NEMO-3 experiment located in the Modane Underground Laboratory researched the neutrinoless double beta decay from 2003 to 2011. Seven isotopes were studied with the unique tracko-calo technique including the 2 most important in term of sensitivity with 7kg of 100Mo and 1kg of 82Se
New antineutrino energy spectra predictions from the summation of beta decay branches of the fission products
In this paper, we study the impact of the inclusion of the recently measured
beta decay properties of the Tc, Mo, and
Nb nuclei in an updated calculation of the antineutrino energy spectra
of the four fissible isotopes U, and Pu. These
actinides are the main contributors to the fission processes in Pressurized
Water Reactors. The beta feeding probabilities of the above-mentioned Tc, Mo
and Nb isotopes have been found to play a major role in the component
of the decay heat of Pu, solving a large part of the
discrepancy in the 4 to 3000\,s range. They have been measured using the Total
Absorption Technique (TAS), avoiding the Pandemonium effect. The calculations
are performed using the information available nowadays in the nuclear
databases, summing all the contributions of the beta decay branches of the
fission products. Our results provide a new prediction of the antineutrino
energy spectra of U, Pu and in particular of U for
which no measurement has been published yet. We conclude that new TAS
measurements are mandatory to improve the reliability of the predicted spectra.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
The Waveform Digitiser of the Double Chooz Experiment: Performance and Quantisation Effects on PhotoMultiplier Tube Signals
We present the waveform digitiser used in the Double Chooz experiment. We
describe the hardware and the custom-built firmware specifically developed for
the experiment. The performance of the device is tested with regards to
digitising low light level signals from photomultiplier tubes and measuring
pulse charge. This highlights the role of quantisation effects and leads to
some general recommendations on the design and use of waveform digitisers.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in JINS
Antineutrino emission and gamma background characteristics from a thermal research reactor
The detailed understanding of the antineutrino emission from research
reactors is mandatory for any high sensitivity experiments either for
fundamental or applied neutrino physics, as well as a good control of the gamma
and neutron backgrounds induced by the reactor operation. In this article, the
antineutrino emission associated to a thermal research reactor: the OSIRIS
reactor located in Saclay, France, is computed in a first part. The calculation
is performed with the summation method, which sums all the contributions of the
beta decay branches of the fission products, coupled for the first time with a
complete core model of the OSIRIS reactor core. The MCNP Utility for Reactor
Evolution code was used, allowing to take into account the contributions of all
beta decayers in-core. This calculation is representative of the isotopic
contributions to the antineutrino flux which can be found at research reactors
with a standard 19.75\% enrichment in U. In addition, the required
off-equilibrium corrections to be applied to converted antineutrino energy
spectra of uranium and plutonium isotopes are provided. In a second part, the
gamma energy spectrum emitted at the core level is provided and could be used
as an input in the simulation of any reactor antineutrino detector installed at
such research facilities. Furthermore, a simulation of the core surrounded by
the pool and the concrete shielding of the reactor has been developed in order
to propagate the emitted gamma rays and neutrons from the core. The origin of
these gamma rays and neutrons is discussed and the associated energy spectrum
of the photons transported after the concrete walls is displayed.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, Data in Appendix A and B (13 pages

Indication for the disappearance of reactor electron antineutrinos in the Double Chooz experiment
The Double Chooz Experiment presents an indication of reactor electron
antineutrino disappearance consistent with neutrino oscillations. A ratio of
0.944 0.016 (stat) 0.040 (syst) observed to predicted events was
obtained in 101 days of running at the Chooz Nuclear Power Plant in France,
with two 4.25 GW reactors. The results were obtained from a single 10
m fiducial volume detector located 1050 m from the two reactor cores. The
reactor antineutrino flux prediction used the Bugey4 measurement as an anchor
point. The deficit can be interpreted as an indication of a non-zero value of
the still unmeasured neutrino mixing parameter \sang. Analyzing both the rate
of the prompt positrons and their energy spectrum we find \sang = 0.086
0.041 (stat) 0.030 (syst), or, at 90% CL, 0.015 \sang 0.16.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, (new version after PRL referee's comments

Measurement of the 2νββ decay half-life of 150Nd and a search for 0νββ decay processes with the full exposure from the NEMO-3 detector
We present results from a search for neutrinoless double-β (0νββ) decay using 36.6 g of the isotope
150Nd with data corresponding to a live time of 5.25 y recorded with the NEMO-3 detector. We construct a
complete background model for this isotope, including a measurement of the two-neutrino double-β decay
half-life of T2ν
1=2 ¼ ½9.34 0.22ðstatÞ þ0.62 −0.60 ðsystÞ × 1018 y for the ground state transition, which represents
the most precise result to date for this isotope. We perform a multivariate analysis to search for 0νββ decays
in order to improve the sensitivity and, in the case of observation, disentangle the possible underlying decay
mechanisms. As no evidence for 0νββ decay is observed, we derive lower limits on half-lives for several mechanisms involving physics beyond the standard model. The observed lower limit, assuming light
Majorana neutrino exchange mediates the decay, is T0ν
1=2 > 2.0 × 1022 y at the 90% C.L., corresponding to
an upper limit on the effective neutrino mass of hmνi < 1.6–5.3 eV
Development of methods for the preparation of radiopure 82Se sources for the SuperNEMO neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment
A radiochemical method for producing 82Se sources with an ultra-low level of contamination of natural radionuclides (40K, decay products of 232Th and 238U) has been developed based on cation-exchange chromatographic purification with reverse removal of impurities. It includes chromatographic separation (purification), reduction, conditioning (which includes decantation, centrifugation, washing, grinding, and drying), and 82Se foil production. The conditioning stage, during which highly dispersed elemental selenium is obtained by the reduction of purified selenious acid (H2SeO3) with sulfur dioxide (SO2) represents the crucial step in the preparation of radiopure 82Se samples. The natural selenium (600 g) was first produced in this procedure in order to refine the method. The technique developed was then used to produce 2.5 kg of radiopure enriched selenium (82Se). The produced 82Se samples were wrapped in polyethylene (12 μm thick) and radionuclides present in the sample were analyzed with the BiPo-3 detector. The radiopurity of the plastic materials (chromatographic column material and polypropylene chemical vessels), which were used at all stages, was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The radiopurity of the 82Se foils was checked by measurements with the BiPo-3 spectrometer, which confirmed the high purity of the final product. The measured contamination level for 208Tl was 8-54 μBq/kg, and for 214Bi the detection limit of 600 μBq/kg has been reached.</p
