The Republican Right since 1945
In 1981, a Right Wing Republican at long last resided in the White House, presiding over what may prove to be the most fundamental restructuring of American political life since the days of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Fortunately, The Republican Right since 1945 now provides us with the necessary historical understanding of conservative Republicans. David Reinhard\u27s dispassionate yet lively book recounts the Republican Right\u27s political struggles from the death of FDR in 1945 to the inauguration of Ronald Reagan.
Younger readers will discover that Right Wing Republicans are older than Ronald Reagan or Barry Goldwater and that some conservative Republicans once feared the overextension of American power abroad and the rise of the garrison state at home. Those old enough to remember when the Republican Right was called the Old Guard will rediscover the events and personalities of those earlier years, thanks to Reinhardâs use of more than thirty five manuscript collections and the most recent historical writing.
Not content to let this history end where traditional manuscript sources run thin, Reinhard has brought the story of the Republican Right Wing forward to President Ronald Reagan\u27s inauguration, placing Right Wing Republican reaction to the Johnson and the Nixon-Ford years within the context of the earlier period and chronicling the electoral triumph of Ronald Reagan and the Republican Right. Students of the past and observers of the present will appreciate Reinhard\u27s treatment of the always-troubled Nixon-Republican Right association; challenger Ronald Reagan\u27s battle against President Gerald Ford in 1976; the decline of GOP moderation; and the rise of the New Right-Moral Majority forces and their relationship to the now ascendant Republican Right.
Reinhard illuminates the conservative Republican past and thereby makes the current political scene more understandable. Thoroughly researched and brilliantly written, The Republican Right since 1945 will fascinate scholars and general readers alike.

Memory-Like Responses of Brain Microglia Are Controlled by Developmental State and Pathogen Dose
Microglia, the innate immune cells of the central nervous system, feature adaptive immune memory with implications for brain homeostasis and pathologies. However, factors involved in the emergence and regulation of these opposing responses in microglia have not been fully addressed. Recently, we showed that microglia from the newborn brain display features of trained immunity and immune tolerance after repeated contact with pathogens in a dose-dependent manner. Here, we evaluate the impact of developmental stage on adaptive immune responses of brain microglia after repeated challenge with ultra-low (1 fg/ml) and high (100 ng/ml) doses of the endotoxin LPS in vitro. We find that priming of naĂŻve microglia derived from newborn but not mature and aged murine brain with ultra-low LPS significantly increased levels of pro-inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ÎČ, MMP-9, and iNOS as well as neurotrophic factors indicating induction of trained immunity (p \u3c 0.05). In contrast, stimulation with high doses of LPS led to a robust downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and iNOS independent of the developmental state, indicating induced immune tolerance. Furthermore, high-dose priming with LPS upregulated anti-inflammatory mediators IL-10, Arg-1, TGF- ÎČ, MSR1, and IL-4 in newborn microglia (p \u3c 0.05). Our data indicate pronounced plasticity of the immune response of neonate microglia compared with microglia derived from mature and aged mouse brain. Induced trained immunity after priming with ultra-low LPS doses may be responsible for enhanced neuro-inflammatory susceptibility of immature brain. In contrast, the immunosuppressed phenotype following high-dose LPS priming might be prone to attenuate excessive damage after recurrent systemic inflammation
Achievement emotions and academic achievement: Reciprocal relations and the moderating influence of academic buoyancy.
Control-value theory proposes that achievement emotions impact achievement, and that achievement outcomes (i.e., success and failure) reciprocally influence the development of achievement emotions. Academic buoyancy is an adaptive response to minor academic adversity, and might, therefore, offer protection from achievement being undermined by negative achievement emotions. At present, however, there is little empirical evidence for these hypothesized relations. In this study we examined reciprocal relations between three achievement emotions (enjoyment, boredom, and anxiety) and test performance in the context of mathematics, and whether academic buoyancy moderated relations between these emotions and test performance. Data were collected from 1,242 primary school students (mean age = 9.3 years) over 4 waves within 1 school year. Achievement emotions (Tâ and Tâ) and test performance (Tâ and Tâ) were measured alternately. Academic buoyancy was measured at Tâ. A structural equation model showed negative relations of anxiety to subsequent test performance and negative relations of test performance to subsequent anxiety. Test performance also predicted enjoyment and boredom, but not vice versa. A latent-interaction structural equation model showed buoyancy moderated relations between anxiety and test performance. Test performance was highest when anxiety was low and buoyancy high. Practitioners should consider using interventions to reduce anxiety and downstream effects on achievement
LIFE-SHARE Project: Developing a Digitisation Strategy Toolkit
This poster will outline the Digitisation Strategy Toolkit created as part of the LIFE-SHARE project. The toolkit is based on the lifecycle model created by the LIFE project and explores the creation, acquisition, ingest, preservation (bit-stream and content) and access requirements for a digitisation strategy. This covers the policies and infrastructure required in libraries to establish successful practices. The toolkit also provides both internal and external resources to support the service. This poster will illustrate how the toolkit works effectively to support digitisation with examples from three case studies at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York
The role of achievement emotions in primary school mathematics: Controlâvalue antecedents and achievement outcomes
Background Appraisals of control and value are proposed as proximal antecedents of achievement emotions, which, in turn, predict achievement. Relatively few studies have investigated how control and value may interact to determine achievement emotions, or subsequent achievement mediated by emotions.
Aim To examine whether control, value, and their interaction predicted mathematics test score directly, and indirectly, mediated by three salient achievement emotions: enjoyment, boredom, and anxiety.
Method Data were collected from 1,298 primary schoolchildren. Participants completed self-report measures of control, value (i.e., intrinsic, attainment, and utility), and achievement emotions (i.e., enjoyment, boredom, and anxiety), in the context of mathematics. Participants then undertook a curriculum-based mathematics test in class.
Results Higher control and value were related to a higher mathematics test score directly, and indirectly, mediated via higher enjoyment and lower anxiety. The interaction of control and intrinsic value predicted mathematics test score directly, and indirectly, mediated via enjoyment.
Conclusion Intrinsic value amplified the direct positive relation between control and mathematics test score. Intrinsic value also protected mathematics test scores at lower levels of control indirectly, through higher enjoyment. Helping students to maximize control and value will be beneficial for their learning experience and outcomes
COVID-19 Meets Control-Value Theory: Emotional Reactions to Canceled High-Stakes Examinations
In many countries, examinations scheduled for summer 2020 were canceled as part of measures designed to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. To examine how four retrospective emotions about canceled examinations (relief, gratitude, disappointment, and anger) and one prospective emotion (test anxiety) were related to control-value appraisals, a sample of 474 participants in the UK aged 15-19 years, who would have taken high-stakes examinations if they had not been canceled, self-reported measures of control, value, retrospective emotions and test anxiety. Data were analysed using the confirmatory factor analysis within exploratory structural equation modeling (EwC) approach. Relief, gratitude, and anger were predicted from expectancy Ă value interactions. Disappointment was related to expectancy only. Test anxiety was predicted independently by expectancy and positive/negative value. Findings offer broad support for Control-Value Theory and show how the appraisals underpinning achievement emotions can differ when focused on canceled examinations rather than success or failure
An Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics Model and its Applications to Fusion Reaction near Barrier
An improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model is proposed. By using this
model, the properties of ground state of nuclei from Li to Pb can
be described very well with one set of parameters. The fusion reactions for
Ca+Zr, Ca+Zr and Ca+Zr at energy near
barrier are studied by this model. The experimental data of the fusion cross
sections for Ca+Zr at the energy near barrier can be
reproduced remarkably well without introducing any new parameters. The
mechanism for the enhancement of fusion probability for fusion reactions with

The lack of star formation gradients in galaxy groups up to z~1.6
In the local Universe, galaxy properties show a strong dependence on
environment. In cluster cores, early type galaxies dominate, whereas
star-forming galaxies are more and more common in the outskirts. At higher
redshifts and in somewhat less dense environments (e.g. galaxy groups), the
situation is less clear. One open issue is that of whether and how the star
formation rate (SFR) of galaxies in groups depends on the distance from the
centre of mass. To shed light on this topic, we have built a sample of X-ray
selected galaxy groups at 0<z<1.6 in various blank fields (ECDFS, COSMOS,
GOODS). We use a sample of spectroscopically confirmed group members with
stellar mass M >10^10.3 M_sun in order to have a high spectroscopic
completeness. As we use only spectroscopic redshifts, our results are not
affected by uncertainties due to projection effects. We use several SFR
indicators to link the star formation (SF) activity to the galaxy environment.
Taking advantage of the extremely deep mid-infrared Spitzer MIPS and
far-infrared Herschel PACS observations, we have an accurate, broad-band
measure of the SFR for the bulk of the star-forming galaxies. We use
multi-wavelength SED fitting techniques to estimate the stellar masses of all
objects and the SFR of the MIPS and PACS undetected galaxies. We analyse the
dependence of the SF activity, stellar mass and specific SFR on the
group-centric distance, up to z~1.6, for the first time. We do not find any
correlation between the mean SFR and group-centric distance at any redshift. We
do not observe any strong mass segregation either, in agreement with
predictions from simulations. Our results suggest that either groups have a
much smaller spread in accretion times with respect to the clusters and that
the relaxation time is longer than the group crossing time.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
The obesity epidemic in 32,936 youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the German/Austrian DPV and US T1D Exchange (T1DX) registries
Objective
To examine the current extent of the obesity problem in 2 large pediatric clinical registries in the US and Europe and to examine the hypotheses that increased body mass index (BMI) z-scores (BMIz) are associated with greater hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and increased frequency of severe hypoglycemia in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Study design
International (World Health Organization) and national (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents) BMI references were used to calculate BMIz in participants (age 2-<18 years and â„1 year duration of T1D) enrolled in the T1D Exchange (n = 11â435) and the Diabetes Prospective Follow-up (n = 21â501). Associations between BMIz and HbA1c and severe hypoglycemia were assessed.
Results
Participants in both registries had median BMI values that were greater than international and their respective national reference values. BMIz was significantly greater in the T1D Exchange vs the Diabetes Prospective Follow-up (P < .001). After stratification by age-group, no differences in BMI between registries existed for children 2-5 years, but differences were confirmed for 6- to 9-, 10- to 13-, and 14- to 17-year age groups (all P < .001). Greater BMIz were significantly related to greater HbA1c levels and more frequent occurrence of severe hypoglycemia across the registries, although these associations may not be clinically relevant.
Conclusions
Excessive weight is a common problem in children with T1D in Germany and Austria and, especially, in the US. Our data suggest that obesity contributes to the challenges in achieving optimal glycemic control in children and adolescents with T1D
Training of Instrumentalists and Development of New Technologies on SOFIA
This white paper is submitted to the Astronomy and Astrophysics 2010 Decadal
Survey (Astro2010)1 Committee on the State of the Profession to emphasize the
potential of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) to
contribute to the training of instrumentalists and observers, and to related
technology developments. This potential goes beyond the primary mission of
SOFIA, which is to carry out unique, high priority astronomical research.
SOFIA is a Boeing 747SP aircraft with a 2.5 meter telescope. It will enable
astronomical observations anywhere, any time, and at most wavelengths between
0.3 microns and 1.6 mm not accessible from ground-based observatories. These
attributes, accruing from the mobility and flight altitude of SOFIA, guarantee
a wealth of scientific return. Its instrument teams (nine in the first
generation) and guest investigators will do suborbital astronomy in a
shirt-sleeve environment. The project will invest $10M per year in science
instrument development over a lifetime of 20 years. This, frequent flight
opportunities, and operation that enables rapid changes of science instruments
and hands-on in-flight access to the instruments, assure a unique and extensive
potential - both for training young instrumentalists and for encouraging and
deploying nascent technologies. Novel instruments covering optical, infrared,
and submillimeter bands can be developed for and tested on SOFIA by their
developers (including apprentices) for their own observations and for those of
guest observers, to validate technologies and maximize observational
