Analysis of bit rate dependence up to 80 Gbit/s of a simple wavelength converter based on XPM in a SOA and a shifted filtering
This paper provides the analysis of wavelength converted pulses obtained with a simple semiconductor
optical amplifier (SOA)-based wavelength conversion scheme, which exploits cross phase modulation
(XPM) in an SOA in conjunction with shifted filtering. The analysis includes experimental measurements
of the back-to-back system performances as well as frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) characterisations
of the wavelength converted pulses. These measurements are implemented at different bit rates
up to 80 Gbit/s and for both red and blue-shifted filtering, particularly showing different patterning effect
dependencies of red and blue-shifting techniques. This analysis is developed by the addition of a numerical
study which corroborates the experimental results. A further understanding of the different performances
of red and blue filtering techniques, presented in the literature, can thus be proposed. The
placement of the filter to undertake red-shifted filtering (RSF) allows us to achieve very short pulse
widths but high bit rate operation is limited by pattern effects. The blue-shifted filtering (BSF) technique
shows optimum performance as regards to patterning effects even if the wavelength converted pulses
can be larger
Transverse-mode coupling in a Kerr medium
We analyze nonlinear transverse mode coupling in a Kerr medium placed in an
optical cavity and its influence on bistability and different kinds of quantum
noise reduction. Even for an input beam that is perfectly matched to a cavity
mode, the nonlinear coupling produces an excess noise in the fluctuations of
the output beam. Intensity squeezing seems to be particularly robust with
respect to mode coupling, while quadrature squeezing is more sensitive.
However, it is possible to find a mode the quadrature squeezing of which is not

Mechanism of action of probiotics
The modern diet doesn't provide the required amount of beneficial bacteria. Maintenance of a proper microbial ecology in the host is the main criteria to be met for a healthy growth. Probiotics are one such alternative that are supplemented to the host where by and large species of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces are considered as main probiotics. The field of probiotics has made stupendous strides though there is no major break through in the identification of their mechanism of action. They exert their activity primarily by strengthening the intestinal barrier and immunomodulation. The main objective of the study was to provide a deep insight into the effect of probiotics against the diseases, their applications and proposed mechanism of action
The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Analysis of potential systematics
We analyze the density field of galaxies observed by the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS)-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) included in
the SDSS Data Release Nine (DR9). DR9 includes spectroscopic redshifts for over
400,000 galaxies spread over a footprint of 3,275 deg^2. We identify,
characterize, and mitigate the impact of sources of systematic uncertainty on
large-scale clustering measurements, both for angular moments of the
redshift-space correlation function and the spherically averaged power
spectrum, P(k), in order to ensure that robust cosmological constraints will be
obtained from these data. A correlation between the projected density of stars
and the higher redshift (0.43 < z < 0.7) galaxy sample (the `CMASS' sample) due
to imaging systematics imparts a systematic error that is larger than the
statistical error of the clustering measurements at scales s > 120h^-1Mpc or k
< 0.01hMpc^-1. We find that these errors can be ameliorated by weighting
galaxies based on their surface brightness and the local stellar density. We
use mock galaxy catalogs that simulate the CMASS selection function to
determine that randomly selecting galaxy redshifts in order to simulate the
radial selection function of a random sample imparts the least systematic error
on correlation function measurements and that this systematic error is
negligible for the spherically averaged correlation function. The methods we
recommend for the calculation of clustering measurements using the CMASS sample
are adopted in companion papers that locate the position of the baryon acoustic
oscillation feature (Anderson et al. 2012), constrain cosmological models using
the full shape of the correlation function (Sanchez et al. 2012), and measure

An Infrared Coronagraphic Survey for Substellar Companions
We have used the F160W filter (1.4-1.8 um) and the coronagraph on the
Near-InfraRed Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) on the Hubble Space
Telescope (HST) to survey 45 single stars with a median age of 0.15 Gyr, an
average distance of 30 pc, and an average H-magnitude of 7 mag. For the median
age we were capable of detecting a 30 M_Jup companion at separations between 15
and 200 AU. A 5 M_Jup object could have been detected at 30 AU around 36% of
our primaries. For several of our targets that were less than 30 Myr old, the
lower mass limit was as low as a Jupiter mass, well into the high mass planet
region. Results of the entire survey include the proper motion verification of
five low-mass stellar companions, two brown dwarfs (HR7329B and TWA5B) and one

Prediction of 7-year psychopathology from mother-infant joint attention behaviours: a nested caseâcontrol study
<br>Background: To investigate whether later diagnosis of psychiatric disorder can be predicted from analysis of mother-infant joint attention (JA) behaviours in social-communicative interaction at 12 months.</br>
<br>Method:
Using data from a large contemporary birth cohort, we examined 159 videos of a mother-infant interaction for joint attention behaviour when children were aged one year, sampled from within the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort. Fifty-three of the videos involved infants who were later considered to have a psychiatric disorder at seven years and 106 were same aged controls. Psychopathologies included in the case group were disruptive behaviour disorders, oppositional-conduct disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, pervasive development disorder, anxiety and depressive disorders. Psychiatric diagnoses were obtained using the Development and Wellbeing Assessment when the children were seven years old.</br> <br>Results: None of the three JA behaviours (shared look rate, shared attention rate and shared attention intensity) showed a significant association with the primary outcome of caseâcontrol status. Only shared look rate predicted any of the exploratory sub-diagnosis outcomes and was found to be positively associated with later oppositional-conduct disorders (OR [95% CI]: 1.5 [1.0, 2.3]; pâ=â0.041).</br><br>Conclusions: JA behaviours did not, in general, predict later psychopathology. However, shared look was positively associated with later oppositional-conduct disorders. This suggests that some features of JA may be early markers of later psychopathology. Further investigation will be required to determine whether any JA behaviours can be used to screen for families in need of intervention.</br>
