    Get PDF

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is the first grain legume in Europe and the second in the world. Major constraints for its cultivation include abiotic complex stresses such as drought. Both, the availability of resistance sources and a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms through which pea can tolerate stress are necessary for successful breeding programmes. In the present work, by different approaches we aimed to search and characterize new sources of drought tolerance in pea and further understand mechanisms underlying water stress responses. In a preliminary screening we sought drought tolerance pea genotypes using different physiological parameters related with drought stress under controlled conditions and compared their drought responses with a susceptible check. In addition, their adaptation to different Mediterranean environments was assessed in field trials during four seasons. Further, interaction with resistance to Fusarium oxysporum, an important biotic stress causing wilting of peas, was investigated. In order to ease breeding we identified quantitative trait loci related with tolerance over a recombinant inbred line population and based on model plant databases we developed a genetic model for drought tolerance using bioinformatics tools and verified experimentally by gene expression assays.

Undifferentiated round cell sarcoma of the broad ligament

Sarcomas of the broad ligament are very uncommon. To our knowledge, there are no cases published of undifferentiated round cell sarcoma of the broad ligament. Round cell sarcomas are a rare and very aggressive variant, which due to their sensitivity to chemotherapy, have an acceptable prognosis. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman who presented with a pelvic mass with a 7-cm diameter placed on the right broad ligament. After surgery, she was diagnosed with undifferentiated round cell sarcoma of the broad ligament. The patient received adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and after 12 years of follow-up, she still remains asymptomatic. Proper differential diagnoses as well as an appropriate adjuvant therapy after surgical treatment seem to be essential to obtain good oncological outcomes in this rare entit

Proceedings of: The International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval, October, 2009 (KDIR 2009). First International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (IC3K 2009), Funchal (Madeira, Portugal)The anonymization of unstructured texts is nowadays a task of great importance in several text mining applications. Medical records anonymization is needed both to preserve personal health information privacy and enable further data mining efforts. The described ANONYMITEXT system is designed to de identify sensible data from unstructured documents. It has been applied to Spanish clinical notes to recognize sensible concepts that would need to be removed if notes are used beyond their original scope. The system combines several medical knowledge resources with semantic clinical notes induced dictionaries. An evaluation of the semi automatic process has been carried on a subset of the clinical notes on the most frequent attributes. This work has been partially supported by MAVIR (S 0505/TIC 0267) and by the TIN2007 67407 C03 01 project BRAVO

the intriguing behavior of an apparently simple coupling promoter ligand, PPh2(p-C6H4-C6F5), in their Pd complexes

ABSTRACT: Ligand PPh2(p-C6H4-C6F5), LHF, is an example of monodentate biphenyl phosphine that allows for cis coor-dination of two phosphines to Pd, as in complex cis-[Pd(C6F5)2Pd(LHF)2] (A). At 25 °C complex A undergoes easy reductive elimination to decafluorobiphenyl and, competitively, isomerizes to trans-[Pd(C6F5)2Pd(LHF)2] via a 3-coordinated interme-diate [Pd(C6F5)2Pd(LHF)]. Unexpectedly the direct reductive C6F5–C6F5 elimination is faster from the 4-coordinated complex A than from the 3-coordinated intermediate. The reason of this is that two cis LHF ligands play the role of a chelate with a large bite angle with tetrahedral distortion. As a matter of fact, using LHF in excess gives ΔG‡Pf-Pf = 23.1 kcal.mol-1, which ranks its efficiency for coupling and formation of the corresponding Pd0 catalyst as better than XantPhos or PhPEWO-F, and about the same as tBuBrettPhos. On the other hand, complex (µ-Cl)2[Pd2(C6F5)2(LHF)2] (B), obtained by reaction of (µ-Cl)2[Pd2(C6F5)2(tht)2] with LHF, presents in the 19F NMR COSY spectrum a very intriguing through space coupling pattern of the Fortho atoms of the C6F5 group in LHF and the C6F3Cl2-3,5 group on Pd. The inter-mitent coupling mechanism proposed is based on the switching of π-π stacking of C6F5 with one or another Ph group of LHF, which gives rise to enantiomers at the chiral P atom. Rotation around the P–biphenyl bond under hindrance of rotation around the C–C6F5 bond produces the intriguing selective coupling observed.Departamento de Química Física y Química InorgánicaCTQ2016-80913-PJCyL VA051P17VA062G1

Fluorinated vs Nonfluorinated PR2(biaryl) Ligands and Their [AuCl(L)] Complexes: Synthesis, X-ray Structures, and Computational Study of Weak Interactions. Bond, No Bond, and Beyond

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaSix fluorinated PR2(biaryl) phosphines, Ln, with R = Ph, Cy and biaryl = C6H4–C6F5, C6F4–C6H5, C6F4–C6F5, have been prepared. Their [AuCl(Ln)] complexes and H congeners with PhJohnPhos or CyJohnPhos have been studied in order to examine the interactions that bring the distal aryl close to the Au–Cl bond region. X-ray, DFT structure optimization, QTAIM, and NCI methods allow for some understanding of the forces involved. The “no bond” noncovalent distal-aryl/Au–Cl weak interactions are produced at forced short distances achieved under intramolecular structural ligand pressure. Enhanced vdW distal-aryl/Au interactions at “no bond” distances shorter than the sum of Au and C vdW radii and weaker distal-aryl/Cl interactions at “no bond” distances beyond the sum of Cl and C vdW radii counterbalance the unfavorable structural distortion of the free ligand, providing some extra stability of the molecule on the order of 2–10 kcal mol–1. The F substituents in the distal aryl induce shorter aryl distances to the Au–Cl zone, pointing overall to stronger π-aryl polarization as being mainly responsible for the NCIs with gold. The interactions in the C···Cl zone, where the distances are larger than the sum of vdW radii, contribute only about 5%, according to energy estimations using NBOs.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Projects CTQ2016-80913-P and CTQ2017-89217-P)Junta de Castilla y León (Projects VA051P17 and VA062G18)Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad FPI scholarship (BES-2017-080726

In recent years, the presence of technology in the classrooms of our educational centers has increased and the Early Childhood Educational stage has not been left out of this event. This reality aroused interest to develop the I+D+I project “Digital Didactic Materials for Early Childhood Education. Analysis and proposals for use at school and at home. Digit@l Childhood” in which this article is framed. The objective of this work is to make a comparison between five platforms of digital didactic materials of diverse natures (institutional, editorial and free access) of Galicia. For this, we applied an evaluation guide that focuses on the technological, pedagogical, and socio-communicational characteristics of these platforms. In the same way, it is taken into account whether these resources know the characteristics, needs and interests of the students of this educational stage to which they are intended. Throw this analysis we conclude that the platforms are adapting them to the reality of our society, but in a very gradual and superficial way.

Integrating the users in the design of a robot for making Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments (CGA) to elderly people in care centers

    Get PDF
Lisboa, (28-31 de agosto 2017)Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is a multidimensional and multidisciplinary diagnostic instrument that helps provide personalized care to the elderly, by evaluating their physical and mental state. In a social and economic context of growing ageing populations, medical experts can save time and effort if provided with interactive tools to efficiently assist them in doing CGAs, managing standardized tests or data collection. Recent research proposes the use of social robots as the central part of these tools. These robots must be able to unfold all functionalities that questionnaires or motion-based tests require, including natural language, face tracking and monitoring, human motion capture and so on. But another issue is the robot's acceptability and trust by the end-users, both patients (elderly people) and clinicians: the robot needs to be able to engage with the patients during the interaction sessions, and must be perceived as a useful and efficient tool by the clinicians. This paper presents the acquisition of new user requirements for CLARC, through participatory and user-centered design approach, to inform the improvement of both interface and interaction. Thirty eight persons (elderly people, caregivers and health professionals) were involved in the design process of CLARC, based on user-centered methods and techniques of Human-Computer Interaction discipline. This work has been partially funded by the European Union ECHORD++ project (FP7-ICT-601116) and the TIN2015-65686-C5-1-R Spanish Ministerio de EconomÍa y Competitividad project and FEDER funds

Prognostic Score and Benefit from Abiraterone in First-line Metastatic, Castration-resistant Prostate Cancer.

    Get PDF
Most available prognostic nomograms in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) are derived from datasets not representative of the current treatment landscape. A prognostic nomogram for first-line mCRPC treatment was developed from patients treated in the PREVAIL study. To validate the Armstrong model in the COU-AA-302 trial. A post hoc analysis of mCRPC patients treated in the COU-AA-302 trial was carried out (NCT00887198). The Armstrong prognostic model was applied to patients treated in COU-AA-302. A continuous risk score was derived from coefficients from the original model. Time-dependent area under the curve (tAUC) was used to evaluate the overall predictive ability of the model. Patients were categorized according to the number of risk factors present into those at a low (three or fewer risk factors), intermediate (four to six risk factors), and high (seven to ten risk factors) risk. The association with survival was assessed with Cox regression models. Interaction tests were used to assess the impact of treatment arm in each of the prognostic groups. A total of 1088 patients were analyzed. The risk score was associated with overall survival (OS; tAUC 0.733). Most patients were at a low (49%) or intermediate (41%) risk. Risk category was significantly associated with OS (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.3; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.9-2.4; p < 0.001), radiographic progression-free survival (rPFS; HR: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.5-1.8; p < 0.001), and prostate-specific antigen progression-free survival (HR: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.5-1.9; p < 0.001). A significant interaction between risk group and OS (p = 0.007) and rPFS (p = 0.009) was observed. Survival was superior in low-risk patients (HR: 0.73; 95% CI: 0.59-0.89; p = 0.009), but similar in intermediate-risk (HR: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.79-1.21; p = 0.9) and high-risk (HR: 1.35; 95% CI: 0.80-2.28; p = 0.5) patients. Two-year OS rates in abiraterone versus placebo were 82% versus 74% in low-risk, 55% versus 52% in intermediate-risk, and 28% versus 31% in high-risk patients. We validate the prognostic value of the Armstrong risk model in patients treated with first-line androgen receptor signaling inhibitors. Abiraterone provided a greater benefit in low-risk patients with less aggressive disease. Further research is needed to establish the role of Armstrong risk groups for treatment selection in mCRPC patients. In this report, we validated the Armstrong nomogram in the COU-AA-302 trial population. We found a similar prognostic performance to that of the original model. Good-risk patients received the greatest benefit from abiraterone.Authors acknowledge funding support from Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad de España -Instituto de Salud Carlos III: grants CM17-00221 (Rebeca Lozano), CM19/00234 (Casilda Llacer), JR17/00007 (Nuria Romero-Laorden), and JR18/00011 (Elena Castro); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación: RYC-2015-18625 (David Olmos); and Prostate Cancer Foundation: Young Investi-gator Award (2014 David Olmos, 2017 Elena Castro).S
