Supersymmetric Model of Spin-1/2 Fermions on a Chain

In recent work, N=2 supersymmetry has been proposed as a tool for the analysis of itinerant, correlated fermions on a lattice. In this paper we extend these considerations to the case of lattice fermions with spin 1/2 . We introduce a model for correlated spin-1/2 fermions with a manifest N=4 supersymmetry, and analyze its properties. The supersymmetric ground states that we find represent holes in an anti-ferromagnetic background.Comment: 15 pages, 10 eps figure

Increasing of entanglement entropy from pure to random quantum critical chains

It is known that the entropy of a block of spins of size LL embedded in an infinite pure critical spin chain diverges as the logarithm of LL with a prefactor fixed by the central charge of the corresponding conformal field theory. For a class of strongly random spin chains, it has been shown that the correspondent block entropy still remains universal and diverges logarithmically with an "effective" central charge. By computing the entanglement entropy for a family of models which includes the NN-states random Potts chain and the ZNZ_N clock model, we give some definitive answer to some recent conjectures about the behaviour of the effective central charge. In particular, we show that the ratio between the entanglement entropy in the pure and in the disordered system is model dependent and we provide a series of critical models where the entanglement entropy grows from the pure to the random case.Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figures, added reference

Chaos in effective classical and quantum dynamics

We investigate the dynamics of classical and quantum N-component phi^4 oscillators in the presence of an external field. In the large N limit the effective dynamics is described by two-degree-of-freedom classical Hamiltonian systems. In the classical model we observe chaotic orbits for any value of the external field, while in the quantum case chaos is strongly suppressed. A simple explanation of this behaviour is found in the change in the structure of the orbits induced by quantum corrections. Consistently with Heisenberg's principle, quantum fluctuations are forced away from zero, removing in the effective quantum dynamics a hyperbolic fixed point that is a major source of chaos in the classical model.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 5 figures, uses psfig, changed indroduction and conclusions, added reference

    General-Relativistic Thomas-Fermi model

    Get PDF
A system of self-gravitating massive fermions is studied in the framework of the general-relativistic Thomas-Fermi model. We study the properties of the free energy functional and its relation to Einstein's field equations. A self-gravitating fermion gas we then describe by a set of Thomas-Fermi type self-consistency equations.Comment: 7 pages, LaTex, to appear in Gen. Rel. Gra

Real-world outcomes of sipuleucel-T treatment in PROCEED, a prospective registry of men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

BackgroundThe large registry, PROVENGE Registry for the Observation, Collection, and Evaluation of Experience Data (PROCEED)(NCT01306890), evaluated sipuleucel-T immunotherapy for asymptomatic/minimally symptomatic metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).MethodsPROCEED enrolled patients with mCRPC receiving 3 biweekly sipuleucel-T infusions. Assessments included overall survival (OS), serious adverse events (SAEs), cerebrovascular events (CVEs), and anticancer interventions (ACIs). Follow-up was for ≥3 years or until death or study withdrawal.ResultsIn 2011-2017, 1976 patients were followed for 46.6 months (median). The median age was 72 years, and the baseline median prostate-specific antigen level was 15.0 ng/mL; 86.7% were white, and 11.6% were African American. Among the patients, 1902 had 1 or more sipuleucel-T infusions. The median OS was 30.7 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 28.6-32.2 months). Known prognostic factors were independently associated with OS in a multivariable analysis. Among the 1255 patients who died, 964 (76.8%) died of prostate cancer (PC) progression. The median time from the first infusion to PC death was 42.7 months (95% CI, 39.4-46.2 months). The incidence of sipuleucel-T-related SAEs was 3.9%. The incidence of CVEs was 2.8%, and the rate per 100 person-years was 1.2 (95% CI, 0.9-1.6). The CVE incidence among 11,972 patients with mCRPC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database was 2.8%; the rate per 100 person-years was 1.5 (95% CI, 1.4-1.7). One or more ACIs (abiraterone, enzalutamide, docetaxel, cabazitaxel, or radium 223) were received by 77.1% of the patients after sipuleucel-T; 32.5% and 17.4% of the patients experienced 1- and 2-year treatment-free intervals, respectively.ConclusionsPROCEED provides contemporary survival data for sipuleucel-T-treated men in a real-world setting of new life-prolonging agents, which will be useful in discussing treatment options with patients and in powering future trials with sipuleucel-T. The safety and tolerability of sipuleucel-T in PROCEED were consistent with previous findings

Off-diagonal correlations in one-dimensional anyonic models: A replica approach

We propose a generalization of the replica trick that allows to calculate the large distance asymptotic of off-diagonal correlation functions in anyonic models with a proper factorizable ground-state wave-function. We apply this new method to the exact determination of all the harmonic terms of the correlations of a gas of impenetrable anyons and to the Calogero Sutherland model. Our findings are checked against available analytic and numerical results.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, typos correcte

Commentary and Worked Examples to EN 1993-1-10 "Material Toughness and Through Thickness Properties" and Other Toughness Oriented Rules in EN 1993

    Get PDF
This commentary gives explanations and worked examples to the design rules in Eurocode 3 that are influenced by the strength and toughness properties of the structural steels used. It is a commentary and background document to EN 1993-1-10 "Material toughness and through thickness properties" and its extension in EN 1993-1-12 "Design rules for high-strength steels", where toughness properties are explicitly addressed. It however provides also background to other parts of EN 1993, e.g. to EN 1993-1-1 "Design of steel structures - Basic rules and rules for buildings", where the design rules are related only to strength properties as the yield strength and the tensile strength without explicitly mentioning the role of toughness that is hidden behind the resistance formulae. Finally it gives some comments to chapter 6 of EN 1998-1: "Design of structures for earthquake resistance - Part 1: General rules, seismic actions and rules for buildings".JRC.G.5-European laboratory for structural assessmen

Entanglement properties and moment distributions of a system of hard-core anyons on a ring

We study the one-particle von Neumann entropy of a system of N hard-core anyons on a ring. The entropy is found to have a clear dependence on the anyonic parameter which characterizes the generalized fractional statistics described by the anyons. This confirms the entanglement as a valuable measure to investigate topological properties of quantum states. Furthermore, we determine analytically the large N asymptotics of the anyonic one-particle density matrix. The formula presented here generalizes the Lenard formula obtained for a system of N hard-core bosons. Finally, we present a numerical analysis which confirms the analytical results and provides additional insight into the problem under consideration.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figures. v2: Fig 3 changed, Eq 13 changed, minor corrections.
