Microscopic calculations of spin polarized neutron matter at finite temperature

    Get PDF
The properties of spin polarized neutron matter are studied both at zero and finite temperature within the framework of the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock formalism, using the Argonne v18 nucleon-nucleon interaction. The free energy, energy and entropy per particle are calculated for several values of the spin polarization, densities and temperatures together with the magnetic susceptibility of the system. The results show no indication of a ferromagnetic transition at any density and temperature.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure

A study to assess motivational factors in pursuing higher education: a multicultural perspective

    Get PDF
The purpose of this investigation was to (a) determine the motivational factors of students attending Camden County College in Blackwood and to (b) determine if their cultural background played a part in them choosing collective or individualistic reasons to attend. One hundred students were surveyed. Each student was given a survey of 16 questions, eight questions measured individualism and eight measured collectivism. A one-way MANOVA found that the students from Camden County College demonstrated individualistic characteristics regardless of race. The average responses for going to college were more individualistic than hypothesized However, Latinos and African Americans still scored higher on collectivist traits. Other significant factors such as parental level of education are discussed. This study backs up findings that most students who attend community college are first generation college students. These students face additional barriers that others may not. This study will address ways to handle these barriers and discuss the importance of having the right support system

Pediatric Hand Surgery Training in Nicaragua: A Sustainable Model of Surgical Education in a Resource-Poor Environment.

Recent reports have demonstrated that nearly two-thirds of the world's population do not have access to adequate surgical care, a burden that is borne disproportionately by residents of resource-poor countries. Although the reasons for limited access to surgical care are complex and multi-factorial, among the most substantial barriers is the lack of trained surgical providers. This is particularly true in surgical subspecialties that focus on life-improving, rather than life-saving, treatments, such as pediatric hand and upper extremity surgery, which manages such conditions as congenital malformations, trauma and post-traumatic deformities including burns, and neuromuscular conditions (brachial plexus birth palsy, spinal cord injury, and cerebral palsy). Many models of providing surgical care in resource-limited environments have been described and implemented, but few result in sustainable models of health-care delivery. We present our experience developing a pediatric hand and upper extremity surgery training program in Nicaragua, a resource-limited nation, that grew out of a collaboration of American and Nicaraguan orthopedic surgeons. We compare this experience to that of surgeons undergoing subspecialty training in pediatric upper limb surgery in the US, highlighting the similarities and differences of these training programs. Finally, we assess the results of this training program and identify areas for further growth and development

The entropy of a correlated system of nucleons

Realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction induce correlations to the nuclear many-body system which lead to a fragmentation of the single-particle strength over a wide range of energies and momenta. We address the question of how this fragmentation affects the thermodynamical properties of nuclear matter. In particular, we show that the entropy can be computed with the help of a spectral function which can be evaluated in terms of the self-energy obtained in the Self-Consistent Green's Function approach. Results for the density and temperature dependences of the entropy per particle for symmetric nuclear matter are presented and compared to the results of lowest order finite temperature Brueckner--Hartree--Fock calculations. The effects of correlations on the calculated entropy are small, if the appropriate quasi-particle approximation is used. The results demonstrate the thermodynamical consistency of the self-consistent T-matrix approximation for the evaluation of the Green's functions.Comment: REVTEX4 - 43 pages, 10 figures - Published versio

Correlations in Hot Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

    Get PDF
The single-particle spectral functions in asymmetric nuclear matter are computed using the ladder approximation within the theory of finite temperature Green's functions. The internal energy and the momentum distributions of protons and neutrons are studied as a function of the density and the asymmetry of the system. The proton states are more strongly depleted when the asymmetry increases while the occupation of the neutron states is enhanced as compared to the symmetric case. The self-consistent Green's function approach leads to slightly smaller energies as compared to the Brueckner Hartree Fock approach. This effect increases with density and thereby modifies the saturation density and leads to smaller symmetry energies.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Get PDF
Tesi
