Hydrothermal thresholds for seed germination in winter annual forbs from old-field Mediterranean landscapes

Under Mediterranean climates with dry‐hot summers and cool‐wet winters, many forbs with potential for habitat restoration are winter annuals, but there is little information about their germination. We performed laboratory germination experiments on 13 ruderal dicots native to Andalusia (southern Spain). We measured the germination of recently harvested seeds from natural populations across nine temperature treatments (from 5 to 35 °C, constant and alternate); two storage periods; and eight water stress treatments (from 0 to −1.0 MPa). We then calculated the hydrothermal thresholds for seed germination. Final germination ranged from 0–100% and results were mixed in response to temperature. Base temperature was below 6 °C, optimal temperature was around 14 °C and the ceiling temperature around 23 °C. For five species, 10 months of storage improved total germination, indicating a dormancy‐breaking effect, but the other species did not respond or had their germination reduced. All species were relatively tolerant to water stress, with base water potential ranging from −0.8 to −1.8 MPa. Our results suggest that hydrothermal germination thresholds, rather than physiological dormancy, are the main drivers of germination phenology in annual forbs from Mediterranean semi‐dry environments. The variation in germination responses of these forb species differs from winter annual grasses, but their seeds are all suitable for being stored before restoration.European Union's Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007‐2013/.

Matching method and exact solvability of discrete PT-symmetric square wells

    Get PDF
Discrete PT-symmetric square wells are studied. Their wave functions are found proportional to classical Tshebyshev polynomials of complex argument. The compact secular equations for energies are derived giving the real spectra in certain intervals of non-Hermiticity strengths Z. It is amusing to notice that although the known square well re-emerges in the usual continuum limit, a twice as rich, upside-down symmetric spectrum is exhibited by all its present discretized predecessors.Comment: 25 pp, 3 figure

Origin of the Charge-Orbital Stripe Structure in La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_(3) (x=1/2, 2/3)

We propose the origin of the charge-ordered stripe structure with the orbital ordering observed experimentally in La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_(3) (x=1/2, 2/3), in which the long-range Coulomb interaction plays an essential role. We study a Hubbard model with doubly-degenerate e_g orbitals, and treat the on-site Coulomb interaction (U) and the nearest-neighbor one (V) with the Hartree-Fock approximation. Both the charge and orbital ordering structures observed in experiments are reproduced in a wide region of the U-V phase diagram determined by the present study. The stability of the orbital ordering is also confirmed by the perturbation theory.Comment: 4 pages, 5 Postscript figures, REVTeX, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

Gamma photometric redshifts for long gamma-ray bursts

    Get PDF
It is known that the soft tail of the gamma-ray bursts' spectra show excesses from the exact power-law dependence. In this article we show that this departure can be detected in the peak flux ratios of different BATSE DISCSC energy channels. This effect allows to estimate the redshift of the bright long gamma-ray bursts in the BATSE Catalog. A verification of these redshifts is obtained for the 8 GRB which have both BATSE DISCSC data and measured optical spectroscopic redshifts. There is good correlation between the measured and esti redshifts, and the average error is Δz0.33\Delta z \approx 0.33. The method is similar to the photometric redshift estimation of galaxies in the optical range, hence it can be called as "gamma photometric redshift estimation". The estimated redshifts for the long bright gamma-ray bursts are up to z4z \simeq 4. For the the faint long bursts - which should be up to z20z \simeq 20 - the redshifts cannot be determined unambiguously with this method.Comment: accepted in A&A, 7 pages incl. 7 figure

Femtosecond laser microstructuring of zirconia dental implants

    Get PDF
This study evaluated the suitability of femtosecond laser for microtexturizing cylindrical zirconia dental implants surface. Sixty-six cylindrical zirconia implants were used and divided into three groups: Control group (with no laser modification), Group A (microgropored texture), and Group B (microgrooved texture). Scanning electron microscopy observation of microgeometries revealed minimal collateral damage of the original surface surrounding the treated areas. Optical interferometric profilometry showed that ultrafast laser ablation increased surface roughness (Ra, Rq, Rz, and Rt) significantly for both textured patterns from 1.2× to 6×-fold when compared with the control group (p Group B 8.4% ± 0.42% > Group A 1.6% ± 0.35%) and aluminum (Control 4.3% ± 0.9% > Group B 2.3% ± 0.3% > Group A 1.16% ± 0.2%) in the laser-treated surfaces (p Group A 1.94% > Group B 1.72%) as the surfaces were processed with ultrashort laser pulses. We concluded that femtosecond laser microstructuring offers an interesting alternative to conventional surface treatments of zirconia implants as a result of its precision and minimal damage of the surrounding areas

A detailed spectral study of GRB 041219A and its host galaxy

GRB 041219A is one of the longest and brightest gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever observed. It was discovered by the INTEGRAL satellite, and thanks to a precursor happening about 300 s before the bulk of the burst, ground based telescopes were able to catch the rarely-observed prompt emission in the optical and in the near infrared bands. Here we present the detailed analysis of its prompt gamma-ray emission, as observed with IBIS on board INTEGRAL, and of the available X-ray afterglow data collected by XRT on board Swift. We then present the late-time multi-band near infrared imaging data, collected at the TNG, and the CFHT, that allowed us to identify the host galaxy of the GRB as an under-luminous, irregular galaxy of about 5x10^9 M_Sun at best fit redshift of z=0.31 -0.26 +0.54. We model the broad-band prompt optical to gamma-ray emission of GRB 041219A within the internal shock model. We were able to reproduce the spectra and light curve invoking the synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons accelerated by a series of propagating shock waves inside a relativistic outflow. On the other hand, it is less easy to simultaneously reproduce the temporal and spectral properties of the infrared data.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS, Figure 5 in reduced qualit

Dietary Debaryomyces hansenii promotes skin and skin mucus defensive capacities in a marine fish model

The present study explores the effects of two supplementation levels of Debaryomyces hansenii (1.1% and 2.2%) as a probiotic in a reference low fish meal-based diet on the skin mucosal tissue in Sparus aurata. This study includes the evaluation of fish performance coupled with a holistic study of the skin mucosa: i) a transcriptomic study of the skin tissue, and ii) the evaluation of its secreted mucus both in terms of skin mucosal-associated biomarkers and its defensive capacity by means of co-culture analysis with two pathogenic bacteria. Results showed that after 70 days of diet administration, fish fed the diet supplemented with D. hansenii at 1.1% presented increased somatic growth and a better feed conversion ratio, compared to fish fed the control diet. In contrast, fish fed the diet including 2.2% of the probiotic presented intermediate values. Regarding gene regulation, the probiotic administration at 1.1% resulted in 712 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), among which 53.4% and 46.6% were up- and down-regulated, respectively. In particular, D. hansenii modulated some skin biological processes related to immunity and metabolism. Specifically, D. hansenii administration induced a strong modulation of some immune biological-related processes (61 DEGs), mainly involved in B- and T-cell regulatory pathways. Furthermore, dietary D. hansenii promoted the skin barrier function by the upregulation of anchoring junction genes (23 DEGs), which reinforces the physical defense against potential skin damage. In contrast, the skin showed modulated genes related to extracellular exosome and membrane organization (50 DEGs). This modulated functioning is of great interest, particularly in relation to the increased skin mucus defensive capacity observed in the bacterial co-culture in vitro trials, which could be related to the increased modulation and exudation of the innate immune components from the skin cells into the mucus. In summary, the modulation of innate immune parameters coupled with increased skin barrier function and cell trafficking potentiates the skin's physical barrier and mucus defensive capacity, while maintaining the skin mucosa's homeostatic immune and metabolic status. These findings confirmed the advantages of D. hansenii supplementation in low fish meal-based diets, demonstrating the probiotic benefits on cultured marine species

PT-symmetric regularizations in supersymmetric quantum mechanics

Supersymmetry offers one of the deepest insights in the concept of solvability in quantum mechanics. This insight is, paradoxically, restricted by one of the most serious formal drawbacks of the standard Witten's formulation of supersymmetric quantum mechanics which lies in the Jevicki-Rodrigues' postulate of absence of poles in superpotentials W(x) over all the real axis of coordinates x. In our review we emphasize that this obstacle is artificial and that it disappears immediately after a suitable (say, constant) shift of the axis of x into complex plane. Detailed attention is paid to a close relationship between this common trick and the recent not quite expected increase of interest in non-Hermitian (a. k. a. PT-symmetric or pseudo-Hermitian) Hamiltonians. We show that the resulting PT-SUSY regularization recipe proves both easy and universal. An insight into its mathematics is mediated by the complex harmonic oscillator with a centrifugal-like spike. An exhaustive discussion of the role of the strength of this spike is offered. In addition we recollect the possibility of a re-formulation of the recipe in the second-order SUSY language. Finally we list a few promising directions of applicability of our PT-SUSY regularization prescription to a few more complicated nonrelativistic models (superintegrable Hamiltonians of the Smorodinsky-Winternitz and of the Calogero-Sutherland type) and to the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation (as well as to all of its unphysical higher-order analogues).Comment: 17 pages, based on the talk during SUSY QM conference in Valladolid in the summer in 2003, to appear in J. Relativistic supersymmetric quantum mechanics based on Klein-Gordon equation

Witten's non-relativistic formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics was based on a factorization and partnership between Schroedinger equations. We show how it accommodates a transition to the partnership between relativistic Klein-Gordon equations. In such a class of models the requirement of supersymmetry is shown to lead to a certain "exceptional-point" instability of ground states.Comment: 20 page
