Cointegrated TFP processes and international business cycles

    Get PDF
A puzzle in international macroeconomics is that observed real exchange rates are highly volatile. Standard international real business cycle (IRBC) models cannot reproduce this fact. We show that total factor productivity processes for the United States and the rest of the world are characterized by a vector error correction model (VECM) and that adding cointegrated technology shocks to the standard IRBC model helps explaining the observed high real exchange rate volatility. Also, we show that the observed increase of the real exchange rate volatility with respect to output in the past twenty years can be explained by changes in the parameter of the VECM.

Nowadays, it is becoming more common to see children from diverse family backgrounds in our schools. In recent times immigration has been one of the most studied phenomenon in the school context. However, our investigation tries to look at another aspect of classroom diversity and that is, children from gay or lesbian couples. Our investigation, therefore, looks to identify the attitudes not only that society has towards these families but more specifically the attitude of the school community towards them. To complete our project we collected information from 406 people involved in the school context (primary school teachers, students studying to be primary school teachers, parents, grandparents, etc.) and their beliefs, behaviour, and subjectivity towards single sex parents. Some of the results gained through this analysis showed us the variables like, gender, age , level of studies, knowing single sex parents, profession, having or not having children influenced the attitudes of the people questioned with regard to single sex parents

This research is part of the telecommunications sector, highlighting the galloping situation of the prices of mobile telephony in Ecuador, analyzing the consumer perspective. This field research whose qualitative approach, non-experimental, crosssectional and descriptive design, took as the unit of analysis the economically active population of Guayaquil to June 2016, with a sample of 384 people between 18 and 65 years. The data collection technique used to obtain information from consumers about their perception of prices, services, quality and coverage offered by mobile operators in Ecuador was the survey. The objective was to identify whether the choice of mobile phone users in Guayaquil is contingent solely on the prices offered by the three operators in Ecuador, or whether there are other factors that influence their decision. The results revealed that the decision of the users to choose the operator, not only depends on the price, but the range of services offered and the coverage, the galloping of prices of mobile telephony should be controlled by the regulator. The entry of new operators into the country would make it possible to boost the market in the telecommunications sector, promote free competition and avoid restrictive practices, in order to increase the penetration of services and offer better and cheaper prices to users

This research measured the perception of caregivers about the culture of patient safety in a hospital first level of complexity through a descriptive cross-sectional study . It was used as a measurement tool the survey ' Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture ' ( HSOPSC ) of the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ ) Spanish version , which evaluates twelve dimensions. The results showed strengths and organizational learning , continuous improvement and support of managers to patient safety . Dimensions classified as opportunities for improvement were non- punitive culture , staff , transfers and transitions and the degree to which communication is open . It was concluded that although the staff perceived as a positive process improvement and management support also felt it was judged whether any adverse events reported .centro de estudios de perdurabilidad empresaria

    Grey Water Capture

    Get PDF
Many households today do not implement any kind of grey water recycling system. People do not get a grey water system for a variety of reasons; the benefits could be unknown, the uses for grey water could be limited in their specific home, or the economic gain is too minimal to constitute a modification to the house. For our project, we are going to design an easy to install product that enables the reuse of grey water from household sources. Examples of our final product could be something that lets the customer use grey water from the bathroom sink to the toilet or from the shower to the toilet in an easy manner

NESTING ECOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVITY OF THE CUBAN SANDHILL CRANE ON THE ISLE OF YOUTH, CUBA

    Get PDF
We studied nesting ecology and productivity of the Cuban sandhill crane in the Isle of Youth Cuba between 1997-2003. The nesting season extended from late march through June, but due to variable weather conditions could begin in February or extend through July. Overall, 71.1% of nests located produced eggs, while 84.1% of nests with eggs hatched at least one chick. Mean clutch size was 1.72 eggs. There were significant differences in hatching rates (G = 19.05, P \u3c 0.01) and successful nests between years (G = 9.59, P \u3c 0.10). Chicks/successful nest and rainfall during the breeding period (r = 0.6) were positively correlated. Percent successful nests was negatively correlated with total rainfall during the breeding season (r = -0.50). Causes of egg or nest failure included nest abandonment, predation, flooding, and infertility. In regards to breeding biology we recorded feather painting prior to nesting activity, false nests, and a re-nesting attempt after nest destruction. All nests were built on dry land. Cranes selected four of 11 habitat types present in the study area for nesting: open savannah (SNA) (24.2%), semi-closed natural savannah (SSC) (50.67%), open pine woodland (SPPA) (17.7%), and secondary savannah (SS) (7.7%). Palm density, seedlings, and forbs were lower at nest sites compared to random points, while ground cover of sand and litter was greater at nest sites. There were no significant differences in frequency of plant species among nest sites and random points (G = 3.78, P \u3e 0.05). Tree species richness was less at nest sites, likely due to dominance of Tabebuia lepiodphylla and Byrsonima crassifolia species. Significant differences (G = 15.8, P \u3c 0.01) were found in frequency of palm species, with greater density of Colpothrinax wrightii and Coccothrinax miraguama at nests sites. Shrub density was significantly higher (G = 194.68, P \u3c 0.001) at nest sites being dominated by T. lepidophylla. There were no significant differences among nest sites and random points in forb variables (G = 6.67, P \u3e 0.05) with similar frequency at both sites

Parametric and machine learning-based analysis of the seismic vulnerability of adobe historical buildings damaged after the September 2017 Mexico earthquakes

    Get PDF
In September 2017, two strong earthquakes hit the central region of Mexico, producing substantial damage to the historical buildings. A retroactive analysis for assessing the pre-event seismic vulnerability of these constructions allowed for testing the suitability of an existing parameter-based approach based on material and geometrical features. More than 160 adobe buildings in four municipalities of the State of Morelos were surveyed and included in a vulnerability-oriented GIS database. Data were collected on-site and managed by resorting to open-source GIS software combined with a Python-based database management tool and a cloud-based platform for onsite data collection using mobile devices. The parameter-based approach was used for assessing the analytical seismic vulnerability of the buildings and implementing a secondary, more conservative assessment that considers uncertainties associated with the data acquisition process. The capabilities of the database were further used to train a Machine Learning algorithm aimed at overcoming some representativeness limitations of the parameter-based analytical method. This third approach was found to be suitable for assessing the vulnerability of the building typologies addressed in this investigation. Although the implementation discussed in this paper is limited to a specific vernacular typology, it can be used to conduct customized local calibrations.- This work was partly financed by FCT/MCTES through national funds (PIDDAC) under the R & D Unit Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), under reference UIDB/04029/2020.
