Steroid-Induced Psychosis Presenting as Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

A 40 year old overweight male with a history of bronchial asthma, hypertension, and “schizophrenia” was admitted for intractable bronchial asthma. He did not have a history of drug or alcohol use. Upon admission, he was treated with high doses of IV methyl prednisone, oral prednisone, and triamcinolone inhaler. He developed complex visual hallucinations which decreased following tapering of prednisone and discontinuation of the triamcinolone. EEG showed diffuse slowing suggesting a toxic metabolic state

Three-Dimensional Simulations of Tidally Disrupted Solar-Type Stars and the Observational Signatures of Shock Breakout

We describe a three-dimensional simulation of a $1 M_{\odot}$ solar-type star approaching a $10^{6} M_{\odot}$ black hole on a parabolic orbit with a pericenter distance well within the tidal radius. While falling towards the black hole, the star is not only stretched along the orbital direction but even more severely compressed at right angles to the orbit. The overbearing degree of compression achieved shortly after pericenter leads to the production of strong shocks which largely homogenize the temperature profile of the star, resulting in surface temperatures comparable to the initial temperature of the star's core. This phenomenon, which precedes the fallback accretion phase, gives rise to a unique double-peaked X-ray signature that, if detected, may be one of the few observable diagnostics of how stars behave under the influence of strong gravitational fields. If $\sim 10^{6} M_{\odot}$ black holes were prevalent in small or even dwarf galaxies, the nearest of such flares may be detectable by EXIST from no further away than the Virgo Cluster.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, Accepted to ApJ. Early changes in rat diaphragm biology with mechanical ventilation

To better characterize the effects of 24-hour mechanical ventilation on diaphragm, the expression of myogenic transcription factors, myosin heavy chains, and sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium-ATPase pumps was examined in rats. In the diaphragm of mechanically ventilated animals, the mRNA of MyoD, myosin heavy chain-2a and -2b, and sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium-ATPase-1a decreased, whereas myogenin mRNA increased. In the diaphragm of anesthetized and spontaneously breathing rats, only the mRNA of MyoD and myosin heavy chain-2a decreased. MyoD and myogenin protein expression followed the changes at the mRNA, whereas the myosin heavy chain isoforms did not change. Parallel experiments involving the gastrocnemius were performed to assess the relative contribution of muscle shortening versus immobilization-induced deconditioning on muscle regulatory factor expression. Passive shortening produced no additional effects compared with immobilization-induced deconditioning. The overall changes followed a remarkably similar pattern except for MyoD protein expression, which increased in the gastrocnemius and decreased in the diaphragm while its mRNA diminished in both muscles. The early alterations in the expression of muscle protein and regulatory factors may serve as underlying molecular basis for the impaired diaphragm function seen after 24 hours of mechanical ventilation. Whether immobilization-induced deconditioning and/or passive shortening play a role in these alterations could not be fully unraveled

Seismic Evaluation of Highway Bridges - Phase 1

The primary objective of the study was to establish the guidelines for screening, assessing, and ranking Indiana bridges for seismic upgrade. The outcome of the study is a complete strategy for the detailed structural assessment of Indiana highway bridges subjected to seismic forces. The structural evaluation is conducted using a nonlinear time-history analysis of the bridge for simulated or actual records. The specific soil conditions at the site are accounted in terms of the ground motion. From the time history analysis the maximum structural response including displacements, bending moments, shear and axial forces are computed. A weighted evaluation of the ratio of expected demand to available capacity is conducted next. A seismic rating is established based on the weighted evaluation. The bridges are classified into three different categories: high, moderate and low seismic risk. In the case of bridges falling in the high and moderate categories, the weighted seismic rating can be used to establish strengthening needs. The same type of analysis could be used to evaluate different strengthening schemes. In the case where the bridge inventory is substantial, the proposed strategy in this study would be more effective helped by a preliminary first level screening of the bridge population. Several first level screening procedures available in the United States are evaluated in this study. First level screening procedures are used in the qualitative ranking of seismic bridges with respect to seismic risk. They are simplified methods for use in extensive highway networks and are the first steps in a comprehensive evaluation strategy. The Indiana Department of Transportation has conducted a preliminary first level screening of the bridge population in the southern part of the state. Several bridges have been identified as presenting a high level of seismic risk. The approach proposed in this study could be used to further refine the preliminary ranking, and to evaluate different strengthening schemes. It must be pointed out that the soil-structure interaction of bridge structures is a developing area. Many questions remain to be answered regarding the proper modeling of the foundation and the surrounding soil. The proposed evaluation strategy can be improved by means of a field evaluation of dynamic characteristics of a representative sample of bridge foundations and soil conditions in the critical southern part of the state

Competencia digitales y gestión administrativa en el servidor público en una Municipalidad Provincial de Cajamarca

El objetivo general de la presente investigación fue establecer la relación existente entre la competencia digital y la gestión administrativa en una Municipalidad Provincial en Cajamarca, 2023. La investigación fue tipo básica con un enfoque cuantitativo, no experimental y con un nivel correlacional. La población y muestra fue 119 trabajadores administrativos, fue de tipo no probabilístico, censal. Como instrumento se aplicó el cuestionario con preguntas vinculadas a cada variable. A modo de resultados, la variable competencia digital y sus cuatro dimensiones, alfabetización digital; comunicación y colaboración; innovación digital y resolución de problemas, tiene una relación alta y significativa con la variable gestión administrativa. Se puede concluir en relación al objetivo general que, existe una relación moderada entre la competencia digital y la gestión administrativa en los servidores públicos de una Municipalidad de Cajamarca con un r = 0.538. Se recomienda al Gerente Municipal, que se realice una evaluación de las competencias digitales que necesita su personal, para en base a esos resultados, se genere el diseño e implementación de un programa de capacitación y entrenamiento para el desarrollo de las competencias digitales

Solución de Dos Estudios de Caso Bajo el Uso de Tecnología CISCO

En este trabajo se plantean dos problemas llamados casos de Estudio, los cuales son analizados y simulados utilizando el software Packet Tracer de propiedad de CISCO con sus diferentes dispositivos. El primer escenario se configura una red pequeña para que admita conectividad IPv4 e IPv6, seguridad de switches, routing entre VLAN, el protocolo de routing dinámico RIPv2, el protocolo de configuración de hosts dinámicos (DHCP), la traducción de direcciones de red dinámicas y estáticas (NAT), listas de control de acceso (ACL) y el protocolo de tiempo de red (NTP) servidor/cliente. El segundo escenario es una empresa que posee dos sucursales distribuidas en las ciudades de Bogotá y Medellín, donde se configuraron e interconectaron entre sí cada uno de los dispositivos que forman parte de las sucursales, acorde con los lineamientos establecidos para el direccionamiento IP, protocolos de enrutamiento y demás aspectos que forman parte de la topología de red.In this work, two problems are called study cases, which are analyzed and simulated using CISCO's proprietary Packet Tracer software with its different devices. Solución de dos escenarios presentes en entornos corporativos bajo el uso de tecnología Cisco

En este diplomado CCNP se propone de manera práctica la solución a dos escenarios que involucra configuración de dispositivos cisco. En el primer escenario, principalmente se abordan dos temas fundamentales en el ejercicio de la configuración de redes, por una parte, se implementan protocolos de enrutamiento dinámico, entre ellos OSPF, y EIGRP, estos permiten lograr comunicación entre diferentes subredes de manera controlada y segura, descubriendo rutas automáticamente y optimizando el flujo de datos en la red, el principio de funcionamiento de estos protocolos es similar, pero los separan ciertas características que dependerán de la necesidad que se quiera solventar. En el segundo escenario se emplea la administración de la conmutación en la arquitectura de una red mediante la implementación de VLANs, configuración de switches capa 2 y capa 3 y disposición de seguridad en redes LAN donde se evidencia la aplicación del conocimiento aprendido.In this CCNP diploma, the solution to two scenarios involving the configuration of Cisco devices is proposed in a practical way. In the first scenario, two fundamental issues are mainly addressed in the exercise of network configuration, on the one hand, dynamic routing protocols are implemented, including OSPF, and EIGRP, these allow to achieve communication between different subnets in a controlled and secure manner. By automatically discovering routes and optimizing the flow of data in the network, the operating principle of these protocols is similar, but they are separated by certain characteristics that depend on the need to be solved. La especulación en concesiones mineras y abuso de derecho en el departamento de Puno

El problema principal de la investigación “La especulación en concesiones mineras y abuso de derecho en el departamento de Puno”, fue la especulación en concesiones mineras conducta mediante la cual algunas personas solicitan la concesión con la finalidad de negociar el derecho y no cumplir con su finalidad, la misma que vendría a configurar abuso de derecho, como objetivo principal se ha planteado determinar cómo la especulación en concesiones mineras genera abuso de derecho en el departamento de Puno, por esta razón se ha considerado el tipo de investigación básica/pura, la cual ha diseñado bajo el planteamiento metodológico del enfoque cualitativo, puesto que se ha recurrido a un diseño fenomenológico hermenéutico, el cual ha utilizado la entrevista y observación documentaria, como técnica de investigación, con la finalidad de conseguir un resultado relevante la población ha estado conformada por expertos en la materia, finalmente se ha llegado a las siguientes conclusiones, que deben concurrir los siguientes elementos para la especulación en concesiones mineras: a) uso contrario a su finalidad económica social, b) uso excesivo o irregular de la concesión minera, c) uso contrario al orden jurídico, moral y buenas costumbres. Para que exista abuso de derecho debe concurrir los siguientes elementos: a) la intención de dañar, b) uso irregular de la norma. c) actuación contraria a la finalidad económica social del derecho, d) actuación contraria al principio de buena fe. Es en merito a estos elementos que se ha determinado que el abuso de derecho se configura en la especulación minera.Tesi

The dynamics, appearance and demographics of relativistic jets triggered by tidal disruption of stars in quiescent supermassive black holes

We examine the consequences of a model in which relativistic jets can be triggered in quiescent massive black holes when a geometrically thick and hot accretion disk forms as a result of the tidal disruption of a star. To estimate the power, thrust and lifetime of the jet, we use the mass accretion history onto the black hole as calculated by detailed hydrodynamic simulations of the tidal disruption of stars. We go on to determine the states of the interstellar medium in various types of quiescent galactic nuclei, and describe how this external matter can affect jets propagating through it. We use this information, together with a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the structure of the relativistic flow, to study the dynamics of the jet, the propagation of which is regulated by the density stratification of the environment and by its injection history. The breaking of symmetry involved in transitioning from one to two dimensions is crucial and leads to qualitatively new phenomena. Many of the observed properties of the Swift 1644+57/GRB 110328A event can be understood as resulting from accretion onto and jets driven by a $10^6 M_\odot$ central mass black hole following the disruption of sun-like star. With the inclusion of a stochastic contribution to the luminosity due to variations in the feeding rate driven by instabilities near the tidal radius, we find that our model can explain the X-ray light curve without invoking a rarely-occurring deep encounter. In conjunction with the number density of black holes in the local universe, we hypothesize that the conditions required to produce the Swift event are not anomalous, but are in fact representative of the jet-driven flare population arising from tidal disruptions. Uso de bioingeniería en suelos que han sido afectados por procesos erosivos en canteras en los cerros orientales de la ciudad de Bogotá en el sector de Usaquén

La explotación de canteras, la deforestación creciente, los procesos de urbanización formal e informal, la falta de control y seguimiento ha ocasionado un gran impacto y deterioro en los ecosistemas ubicados en esta zona principalmente la generación de procesos de erosión La explotación de minería urbana contribuye al desarrollo económico, el cual genera grandes expectativas entre los diferentes representantes involucrados: constructores, comunidades, entes de planeación y autoridades ambientales, cada uno cumple un papel fundamental en el logro de la meta enunciada pero la falta de seguimiento y control permite la explotación irracional de ahí es la importancia del uso de la bioingeniería como agente de mitigación en el impacto ambiental de la minería urbana en los cerros orientales de Bogotá
