ABSTRACTFrom owner’s son to distinguished manager: successes and failures in the process of constructing successors’ legitimacy in family-owned organizationsThe issue of succession is theoretically recognized as one of most delicate moments a family-owned company undergoes. Succession as a social process, in which the heir-successor will have to construct his or her legitimacy, has not been closely examined in recent studies in Brazil. This work’s objective is to analyze the process of construction of legitimacy by successors in two family-owned organizations in the state of Minas Gerais. It seeks to understand the process through the challenges, difficulties, and conflicts lived by the successors throughout their career in the organization. This study will not completely fill this void, but nevertheless seeks to analyze the complex problematic presented by the process of legitimization from the perspectives of family, management, and property. A qualitative approach was used, operationalized through case studies which allowed for the understanding of dynamic specificities and the process of legitimization in each of the companies studied. The results indicate that the company effectively constitutes a primary instance of socialization, promoting the idea of commitment to the continuity of the family business. In addition, the studied cases demonstrated distinct ways through which this legitimization was processed, reinforcing the idea that this a process of social construction

The modelling, design and optimisation of refractory masonry structures and refractory linings requires the understanding of its thermomechanical properties. The most used techniques for thermomechanical characterization of refractory ceramics is presented in this communication, as well the most important properties used for designing. This study is focused on the work lining of steel ladles, the masonry studied is composed by high alumina bricks with dry joints. The mechanical behaviour of alumina spinel bricks is been investigated by compressive strain-stress curves at different temperatures. The characterization of refractory masonry is required for calibration and validation of numerical models and for definitions of nonlinear homogenization techniques. The first step is the mechanical characterization of the bricks. Compressive tests are being performed at cylindrical samples extracted from the bricks to generate its compressive strain-stress curves at room temperature, 600ºC, 800ºC and 1.000ºC. The samples dimension is 50 mm in diameter by 130 mm in height. An electric split furnace will be used to heat the samples at the rate of 5ºC/min. The strains will be measured using a strain gage positioned at the opening of the furnace and the displacement given by the press will monitored. A 200 kN press with an electromechanical jack will be used to apply the compressive load. The results of the brick characterization tests are the compressive strain-stress curves of the material. It will be possible to identify the compressive strength of the material at room temperature (fc) and the compressive strength at a given temperature Θ (fc,Θ). The strain corresponding to fc (ec1) and the rupture strain (ecu) may also be determined for each temperature. The compressive strain-stress curves may be used for modelling, once they represent the damage plasticity of the material. This research will generate experimental results that will be used for calibration and validation of numerical models. Once the models are validated, they will be used to optimise the design of refractory masonry used at steel ladles

The characterization of joint behaviour in mortarless refractory masonry

The understanding of the compressive and tangential behaviour of mortarless joints is mandatory to optimize the design of refractory linings. The joints play an important role during the heating of the equipment, as they reduce the stresses generated due to thermal expansion. This study investigates the normal and tangential behaviour of joints in alumina spinel bricks. The mechanical characterization of the compressive strength of the material is performed at room and elevated temperature. During fabrication this brick, it is pressed, therefore, tests were performed in pressing and orthogonal-to-pressing direction. The thickness of joints is estimated based on a compressive test in two stacked bricks, the joint closure is an nonlinear and strongly heterogeneous and nonlinear phenomena. The determination of the friction angle and friction coefficient of the bricks were performed based on a slipping test.European Commission, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks in the frame of the project ATHOR - Advanced THermomechanical multiscale modelling of Refractory linings 764987 Gran

The manufacturing of several materials adopted in industry, civil construction and our daily life has processes performed at high temperatures, such as melting and heat treatments. Thus, these production processes require products that resist to high temperatures, maintaining their physical and chemical properties in service. Refractory ceramics, due to their properties, have been used for this purpose, having crucial importance in high temperature processes. Refractory linings (composed of refractory ceramics) are used in industrial vessels to produce steel, iron, cement, non-ferrous metals, glass, metallic alloys, in melting process, in petrochemical industry, in incinerators, in mineral processing, in power plants and many other applications. This paper presents the results of a large numerical simulations used to represent the thermomechanical behaviour of steel vessels. Different modelling techniques were used and the results detailed and discussed

The multistage 20-m Shuttle Run Test for predicting VO2Peak in 6–9-year-old children: a comparison with VO2Peak predictive equations

    Get PDF
This study aimed (i) to verify if using and carrying a portable gas analyzer (PGA) con strained the performance of school children on the multistage 20-m shuttle run test (20mSRT), (ii) to verify which peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) predictive equations have greater agreement with VO2peak values measured by direct oximetry using the 20mSRT. The study participants were 130 children ((67 boys (age 7.76 ± 0.97 years) and 63 girls (age 7.59 ± 0.91 years)), who performed two randomized trials of the 20mSRT with and without a PGA. Twenty-two predictive equations predicted the VO2peak values through the performance of the test with and without a PGA. Without a PGA, lower values of maximal speed (MS), total laps (TL), and total time (TT) were found for girls than for boys with a PGA. Only six equations were considered to correctly predict VO2peak. In general, higher MS, TL, and TT values were found with the use of a PGA. The predicted VO2peak values from the 20mSRT varied significantly among the published predictive equations. Therefore, we suggest that the six equations that presented satisfactory accuracy could be practically used to examine cardiorespiratory fitness in schools and in research with large populations when direct measurement of VO2peak is not feasible.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Preemptive analgesia has as its basic principle the administration of analgesics before the onset of painful stimuli, in order to reduce or prevent postoperative pain, but this question is little explored in implantology. Thus, this study was conducted in order to evaluate the clinical efficacy of ibuprofen in pain prevention after unit implant surgery. For this triple-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled and randomized clinical trial, 54 insertion surgeries of unitary implants were performed. Two groups have received two different protocols 1 hour before surgery: Ibuprofen group (IBU) 600 mg of ibuprofen; and (2) placebo group (maize starch). The intensity of the pain was evaluated through the visual analogue scale (VAS) in 6 times (1, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the surgery). Patients were instructed to take 750 mg of paracetamol as rescue medication, if necessary. The occurrence and the intensity of pain were analyzed by means of an analysis of variance ANOVA with repeated measurements using the general linear model procedure. The IBU group had significantly lower VAS scores overall (IBU = 0.30, ± 0.57; placebo = 1.14, ± 1.07; p<0.001) and at all times in the intra, intergroup comparisons and time/group interaction than the placebo group (p<0.001). The use of rescue medication was significantly lower and the postoperative time was longer in the IBU group compared to placebo (p = 0.002). The single use of ibuprofen was found to be significantly superior in reducing pain after unit implant surgery compared to placebo

Discovery of biomedical databases through semantic questioning

    Get PDF
Many clinical studies are greatly dependent on an efficient identification of relevant datasets. This selection can be performed in existing health data catalogues, by searching for available metadata. The search process can be optimised through questioning-answering interfaces, to help researchers explore the available data present. However, when searching the distinct catalogues the lack of metadata harmonisation imposes a few bottlenecks. This paper presents a methodology to allow semantic search over several biomedical database catalogues, by extracting the information using a shared domain knowledge. The resulting pipeline allows the converted data to be published as FAIR endpoints, and it provides an end-user interface that accepts natural language questions. This work has received support from the EU/EFPIA Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 806968.
