    Buckling Sensitivity of Tow-Steered Plates Subjected to Multiscale Defects by High-Order Finite Elements and Polynomial Chaos Expansion

    It is well known that fabrication processes inevitably lead to defects in the manufactured components. However, thanks to the new capabilities of the manufacturing procedures that have emerged during the last decades, the number of imperfections has diminished while numerical models can describe the ground truth designs. Even so, a variety of defects has not been studied yet, let alone the coupling among them. This paper aims to characterise the buckling response of Variable Stiffness Composite (VSC) plates subjected to spatially varying fibre volume content as well as fibre misalignments, yielding a multiscale sensitivity analysis. On the one hand, VSCs have been modelled by means of the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) and a layer-wise (LW) approach, with which independent stochastic fields can be assigned to each composite layer. On the other hand, microscale analysis has been performed by employing CUF-based Mechanics of Structure Genome (MSG), which was used to build surrogate models that relate the fibre volume fraction and the material elastic properties. Then, stochastic buckling analyses were carried out following a multiscale Monte Carlo analysis to characterise the buckling load distributions statistically. Eventually, it was demonstrated that this multiscale sensitivity approach can be accelerated by an adequate usage of sampling techniques and surrogate models such as Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE). Finally, it has been shown that sensitivity is greatly affected by nominal fibre orientation and the multiscale uncertainty features

    Analysis of the fisheries diversification funds in Spain during the period 2007 2014

    [EN] A study has been carried out of the fisheries diversification projects in Spain during the period 2007-44, most of which were founded through Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF). On the one hand, the investments have been classified by areas of diversification in order to know how and where investment has been made and the quantities involved. On the other hand, the effectiveness of the different projects has been analysed from the point of view of the Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) managers.     Examining the Reasons for Student Responses to Threatening Behaviors on a College Campus

    Underreporting criminal activity to authorities can pose significant challenges, particularly within college campuses. Crime prevention teams have recognized the importance of reporting potentially concerning behaviors that may precede violent acts. However, reasons for reporting preincident behaviors have been understudied among college samples and failed to account for informal responses, such as talking to third parties or changing personal security features. The present study surveyed 1,075 students from a midwestern state university and evaluated their awareness of threatening or concerning behaviors on campus, response behaviors, and reasons for either acting on or failing to report preincident behaviors. Findings reflected reporting rates (12.3%) consistent with the scientific literature but revealed informal responding as the most common reaction to preincident behaviors (44.6%). Reasons for not taking action included a desire to be uninvolved and perceiving the situation as unlikely to be immediately dangerous. By contrast, those who reported preincident behaviors appraised the situation as immediately dangerous and likely to result in harm.     The Spanish Mediterranean Fishing Guilds (Cofradias): An Example of Collaborative Management with a Key Role in Sustainable Fisheries

    [EN] The management of Spanish coastal fisheries is based on a mixed model where the centralised action of the government is combined with the self-organisation of fishers in cofradias (guilds). These institutions have economic and political functions, intermediating between the State and the fishing sector and mediating in the conflicts that may occur. They also have welfare and mutualist tasks. This original and traditional co-management model is part of the social capital of traditional Spanish fishing. The aim of this article is to explore the possibilities of these Spanish fishers' organisations in order to improve the legitimacy of the fishery system and the sustainability of fisheries. Our hypothesis is that updating and adapting some aspects of the cofradias model could produce efficient forms of collaborative management and lead to improvements in the sustainability of fisheries. To validate this hypothesis the study analysed 69 face-to-face interviews in 21 Spanish-Mediterranean guilds. The analysis focused on three core aspects: the control of fishing resources; the integration of fishing knowledge in the management system; and, finally, the guilds contribution to the legitimacy of the system in the eyes of the fishers.This work was supported by National Plan for Scientific and Technological Research and Innovation (Spanish Economy and Competitiveness Ministry).     Database of spatial distribution of non indigenous species in Spanish marine waters

    Research in marine Spanish waters are focused on several actions to achieve an effectively management on protected areas, with the active participation of the stakeholders and research as basic tools for decision-making. Among these actions, there is one about the knowledge and control on NIS. One of its objectives is the creation of NIS factsheets, which are going to be added to the National Marine Biodiversity Geographical System (GIS) providing complementary information about taxonomic classification, common names, taxonomic synonyms, species illustrations, identification morphological characters, habitat in the native and introduced regions, biological and ecological traits, GenBank DNA sequences, world distribution, first record and evolution in the introduced areas, likely pathways of introduction, effects in the habitats and interaction with native species, and potential management measures to apply. The database will also provide data for (1) the European online platforms, (2) the environmental assessment for the Descriptor 2 (D2-NIS) of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), as well as (3) supporting decisions made by stakeholders. It is the result of extensive collaboration among scientist, manager’s and citizen science in the Spanish North-Atlantic, South-Atlantic, Gibraltar Strait-Alboran, Levantine-Balearic and Canary Islands marine divisions, providing an updated overview of the spatial distribution of relevant extended and invasive NIS of recent and established NIS introduced by maritime transport and aquaculture pathways, as well as on cryptogenic or native species in expansion due to the climatic water warming trend
