Green function approach for scattering quantum walks
In this work a Green function approach for scattering quantum walks is
developed. The exact formula has the form of a sum over paths and always can be
cast into a closed analytic expression for arbitrary topologies and position
dependent quantum amplitudes. By introducing the step and path operators, it is
shown how to extract any information about the system from the Green function.
The method relevant features are demonstrated by discussing in details an
example, a general diamond-shaped graph.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, this article was selected by APS for Virtual

Inactivation of Poxviruses by Upper-Room UVC Light in a Simulated Hospital Room Environment
In the event of a smallpox outbreak due to bioterrorism, delays in vaccination programs may lead to significant secondary transmission. In the early phases of such an outbreak, transmission of smallpox will take place especially in locations where infected persons may congregate, such as hospital emergency rooms. Air disinfection using upper-room 254 nm (UVC) light can lower the airborne concentrations of infective viruses in the lower part of the room, and thereby control the spread of airborne infections among room occupants without exposing occupants to a significant amount of UVC. Using vaccinia virus aerosols as a surrogate for smallpox we report on the effectiveness of air disinfection, via upper-room UVC light, under simulated real world conditions including the effects of convection, mechanical mixing, temperature and relative humidity. In decay experiments, upper-room UVC fixtures used with mixing by a conventional ceiling fan produced decreases in airborne virus concentrations that would require additional ventilation of more than 87 air changes per hour. Under steady state conditions the effective air changes per hour associated with upper-room UVC ranged from 18 to 1000. The surprisingly high end of the observed range resulted from the extreme susceptibility of vaccinia virus to UVC at low relative humidity and use of 4 UVC fixtures in a small room with efficient air mixing. Increasing the number of UVC fixtures or mechanical ventilation rates resulted in greater fractional reduction in virus aerosol and UVC effectiveness was higher in winter compared to summer for each scenario tested. These data demonstrate that upper-room UVC has the potential to greatly reduce exposure to susceptible viral aerosols. The greater survival at baseline and greater UVC susceptibility of vaccinia under winter conditions suggest that while risk from an aerosol attack with smallpox would be greatest in winter, protective measures using UVC may also be most efficient at this time. These data may also be relevant to influenza, which also has improved aerosol survival at low RH and somewhat similar sensitivity to UVC
Deep CO(1–0) Observations of z = 1.62 Cluster Galaxies with Substantial Molecular Gas Reservoirs and Normal Star Formation Efficiencies
We present an extremely deep CO(1–0) observation of a confirmed z = 1.62 galaxy cluster. We detect two spectroscopically confirmed cluster members in CO(1–0) with signal-to-noise ratio . Both galaxies have log(/) > 11 and are gas rich, with /(+) ~ 0.17–0.45. One of these galaxies lies on the star formation rate (SFR)– sequence, while the other lies an order of magnitude below. We compare the cluster galaxies to other SFR-selected galaxies with CO measurements and find that they have CO luminosities consistent with expectations given their infrared luminosities. We also find that they have gas fractions and star formation efficiencies (SFE) comparable to what is expected from published field galaxy scaling relations. The galaxies are compact in their stellar light distribution, at the extreme end for all high-redshift star-forming galaxies. However, their SFE is consistent with other field galaxies at comparable compactness. This is similar to two other sources selected in a blind CO survey of the HDF-N. Despite living in a highly quenched protocluster core, the molecular gas properties of these two galaxies, one of which may be in the process of quenching, appear entirely consistent with field scaling relations between the molecular gas content, stellar mass, star formation rate, and redshift. We speculate that these cluster galaxies cannot have any further substantive gas accretion if they are to become members of the dominant passive population in clusters
Evidence for the classical integrability of the complete AdS(4) x CP(3) superstring
We construct a zero-curvature Lax connection in a sub-sector of the
superstring theory on AdS(4) x CP(3) which is not described by the
OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) supercoset sigma-model. In this sub-sector worldsheet
fermions associated to eight broken supersymmetries of the type IIA background
are physical fields. As such, the prescription for the construction of the Lax
connection based on the Z_4-automorphism of the isometry superalgebra OSp(6|4)
does not do the job. So, to construct the Lax connection we have used an
alternative method which nevertheless relies on the isometry of the target
superspace and kappa-symmetry of the Green-Schwarz superstring.Comment: 1+26 pages; v2: minor typos corrected, acknowledgements adde
Sr-Nd isotope geochemistry of the early Precambrian sub-alkaline mafic igneous rocks from the southern Bastar craton, Central India
Sr–Nd isotope data are reported for the early Precambrian sub-alkaline mafic igneous rocks of the southern Bastar craton, central India. These mafic rocks are mostly dykes but there are a few volcanic exposures. Field relationships together with the petrological and geochemical characteristics of these mafic dykes divide them into two groups; Meso-Neoarchaean sub-alkaline mafic dykes (BD1) and Paleoproterozoic (1.88 Ga) sub-alkaline mafic dykes (BD2). The mafic volcanics are Neoarchaean in age and have very close geochemical relationships with the BD1 type. The two groups have distinctly different concentrations of high-field strength (HFSE) and rare earth elements (REE). The BD2 dykes have higher concentrations of HFSE and REE than the BD1 dykes and associated volcanics and both groups have very distinctive petrogenetic histories. These rocks display a limited range of initial 143Nd/144Nd but a wide range of apparent initial 87Sr/86Sr. Initial 143Nd/144Nd values in the BD1 dykes and associated volcanics vary between 0.509149 and 0.509466 and in the BD2 dykes the variation is between 0.510303 and 0.510511. All samples have positive εNd values the BD1 dykes and associated volcanics have εNd values between +0.3 and +6.5 and the BD2 dykes between +1.9 to +6.0. Trace element and Nd isotope data do not suggest severe crustal contamination during the emplacement of the studied rocks. The positive εNd values suggest their derivation from a depleted mantle source. Overlapping positive εNd values suggest that a similar mantle source tapped by variable melt fractions at different times was responsible for the genesis of BD1 (and associated volcanics) and BD2 mafic dykes. The Rb–Sr system is susceptible to alteration and resetting during post-magmatic alteration and metamorphism. Many of the samples studied have anomalous apparent initial 87Sr/86Sr suggesting post-magmatic changes of the Rb–Sr system which severely restricts the use of Rb–Sr for petrogenetic interpretation
Antlia Dwarf Galaxy: Distance, quantitative morphology and recent formation history via statistical field correction
We apply a statistical field correction technique originally designed to
determine membership of high redshift galaxy clusters to Hubble Space Telescope
imaging of the Antlia Dwarf Galaxy; a galaxy at the very edge of the Local
Group. Using the tip of the red giant branch standard candle method coupled
with a simple Sobel edge detection filter we find a new distance to Antlia of
1.31 +/- 0.03 Mpc. For the first time for a Local Group Member, we compute the
concentration, asymmetry and clumpiness (CAS) quantitative morphology
parameters for Antlia from the distribution of resolved stars in the HST/ACS
field, corrected with a new method for contaminants and complement these
parameters with the Gini coefficient (G) and the second order moment of the
brightest 20 per cent of the flux (M_20). We show that it is a classic dwarf
elliptical (C = 2.0, A = 0.063, S = 0.077, G = 0.39 and M_20 = -1.17 in the
F814W band), but has an appreciable blue stellar population at its core,
confirming on-going star-formation. The values of asymmetry and clumpiness, as
well as Gini and M_20 are consistent with an undisturbed galaxy. Although our
analysis suggests that Antlia may not be tidally influenced by NGC 3109 it does
not necessarily preclude such interaction.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

The effect of cluster magnetic field on the Sunyaev Zeldovich power spectrum
Precision measurements of the Sunyaev Zeldovich (SZ) effect in upcoming blank
sky surveys require theoretical understanding of all physical processes with
\ga 10% effects on the SZ power spectrum. We show that, observed cluster
magnetic field could reduce the SZ power spectrum by at , where the SZ power spectrum will be precisely measured by the Sunyaev
Zeldovich array (SZA) and the Atacama cosmology telescope (ACT). At smaller
scale, this effect is larger and could reach a factor of several. Such effect
must be considered for an unbiased interpretation of the SZ data. Though the
magnetic effect on the SZ power spectrum is very similar to that of radiative
cooling, it is measurable by multi-band CMB polarization measurement.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Revised version accepted by MNRA
