What is the use of the notion of the struggle of recognition ?
Version disponible sur Internet : [ http://www.uc.cl/icp/revista/pdf/rev272/27_2_11.pdf ]This article intervenes in the debate going on in philosophy and sociology regarding recognition and, in particular, the idea of a struggle of recognition. It seeks to make the meaning of the link between recognition and struggle explicit, as well as to discuss reasons for why theories of recognition could provide interesting insights into political theory. In a first step, it confronts Taylor's, Fraser's and Honneth's contribution to the debate on recognition. In a second step, it introduces the distinction between agonistic and consensual struggles of recognition. In a third step, it describes the relationships between institutions and recognition and the various problems that an analysis of claims for recognition has to tackle with.

An informational approach to the global optimization of expensive-to-evaluate functions
In many global optimization problems motivated by engineering applications,
the number of function evaluations is severely limited by time or cost. To
ensure that each evaluation contributes to the localization of good candidates
for the role of global minimizer, a sequential choice of evaluation points is
usually carried out. In particular, when Kriging is used to interpolate past
evaluations, the uncertainty associated with the lack of information on the
function can be expressed and used to compute a number of criteria accounting
for the interest of an additional evaluation at any given point. This paper
introduces minimizer entropy as a new Kriging-based criterion for the
sequential choice of points at which the function should be evaluated. Based on
\emph{stepwise uncertainty reduction}, it accounts for the informational gain
on the minimizer expected from a new evaluation. The criterion is approximated
using conditional simulations of the Gaussian process model behind Kriging, and
then inserted into an algorithm similar in spirit to the \emph{Efficient Global
Optimization} (EGO) algorithm. An empirical comparison is carried out between
our criterion and \emph{expected improvement}, one of the reference criteria in
the literature. Experimental results indicate major evaluation savings over
EGO. Finally, the method, which we call IAGO (for Informational Approach to
Global Optimization) is extended to robust optimization problems, where both
the factors to be tuned and the function evaluations are corrupted by noise.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Global Optimization (This

What could be the role of the concept of recognition in a social theory of domination?
This article discusses the possible contributions of the concept of recognition to a social theory of domination. In a first step, it clarifies the meaning of the notion of social theory and it explains in which sense Honneth’s theory of recognition is a social theory. In a second step, it spells out a series of conditions that should be met by a social theory of domination. The third step raises the main issue of this article: in which respect a theory of recognition could meet these series of conditions? It is argued that in order to answer these questions, the best option is to combine some Bourdieusian insights with some Honnethian themes.
