    Risk attitudes and informal employment in a developing economy

Trade-offs between risk aversion and ability determine worker allocation across formal and informal wage employment, and voluntary and involuntary self employment. Greater risk of informal wage non-payment can raise or lower informal wage employment, depending on the source of risk. Informal wage employment can be reduced by increasing detection efforts or by strengthening contract enforcement for informal wage payment. As the average ability of workers rises, informal wage employment first rises, then falls. Greater demand for formal production may lead to more involuntary self employment

    Pelagic Sargassum as an emerging vector of high rate carbonate sediment import to tropical Atlantic coastlines

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordSince 2011, pelagic Sargassum has inundated Caribbean, West African, and northern Brazilian shorelines in increasing volumes. These events are linked to the emergence of a major new Sargassum bloom region in the Atlantic Ocean, and annual high-volume Sargassum beachings are seemingly becoming an established norm. Resultant socio-economic and ecological implications are widespread and potentially serious, but an important question that has so far received no attention is whether these Sargassum inundations might represent a new source of carbonate sediment in affected coastal areas. This sediment derives from calcareous epiphyte communities that colonise Sargassum (e.g., bryozoans, serpulid worms, and red algae), and if volumetrically significant, may help to counteract aspects of Sargassum beachings thought to reduce sediment supply and decrease coastal stability. Here we determine the carbonate contents of Sargassum from coastal waters of the Mexican Caribbean. Integrating these with volumetric data on beached Sargassum, we then estimate total epiphytic carbonate import during 2018 at 11 sites along a 60 km section of the Quintana Roo coast, Mexico. Based on measured mean carbonate content of Sargassum (2.09% wet weight; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.83–2.32), and estimates of annual beached Sargassum (7.0 × 103 kg drained weight·m−1 of shoreline; 95% CI: 6.9–7.2), our findings indicate that Sargassum beachings in the Mexican Caribbean contributed an average of 179 kg CaCO3·m−1 of shoreline (95% CI: 173–185) in 2018: close to our upper estimate of seagrass epiphyte contributions (210 kg·m−1). Although quantitative data on Sargassum beachings from other locations are sparse, numerous media reports suggest the scale of these events is comparable for many exposed tropical Caribbean and Atlantic shorelines.     Development of the preterm gut microbiome in twins at risk of necrotising enterocolitis and sepsis

    The preterm gut microbiome is a complex dynamic community influenced by genetic and environmental factors and is implicated in the pathogenesis of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and sepsis. We aimed to explore the longitudinal development of the gut microbiome in preterm twins to determine how shared environmental and genetic factors may influence temporal changes and compared this to the expressed breast milk (EBM) microbiome. Stool samples (n = 173) from 27 infants (12 twin pairs and 1 triplet set) and EBM (n = 18) from 4 mothers were collected longitudinally. All samples underwent PCR-DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) analysis and a selected subset underwent 454 pyrosequencing. Stool and EBM shared a core microbiome dominated by Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcaceae, and Staphylococcaceae. The gut microbiome showed greater similarity between siblings compared to unrelated individuals. Pyrosequencing revealed a reduction in diversity and increasing dominance of Escherichia sp. preceding NEC that was not observed in the healthy twin. Antibiotic treatment had a substantial effect on the gut microbiome, reducing Escherichia sp. and increasing other Enterobacteriaceae. This study demonstrates related preterm twins share similar gut microbiome development, even within the complex environment of neonatal intensive care. This is likely a result of shared genetic and immunomodulatory factors as well as exposure to the same maternal microbiome during birth, skin contact and exposure to EBM. Environmental factors including antibiotic exposure and feeding are additional significant determinants of community structure, regardless of host genetics

    Evidence from Family Studies for Autoimmunity in Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy: Associations of Circulating Anti-Heart and Anti-Intercalated Disk Autoantibodies with Disease Severity and Family History

    Background: Serum anti-heart autoantibodies (AHA) and anti-intercalated disk autoantibodies (AIDA) are autoimmune markers in myocarditis. In arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) myocarditis has been reported. To provide evidence for autoimmunity, we searched for AHA and AIDA in ARVC. Methods: We studied: 42 ARVC probands, 23 male, aged 42, interquartile range (IQR) 33;49, 20 from familial and 22 non-familial pedigrees; 37 clinically affected relatives (AR), 24 male aged 35, IQR 18;46; 96 healthy relatives (HR), 49 male, aged 27, IQR 17;45. Serum AHA and AIDA were tested by indirect immunofluorescence on human myocardium and skeletal muscle in 171 of the 175 ARVC individuals and in controls with: non-inflammatory cardiac disease (NICD) (n=160), ischemic heart failure (IHF) (n=141), normal blood donors (NBD) (n=270). Screening of five desmosomal genes was performed in probands; when a sequence variant was identified, cascade family screening followed, blind to immunological results. Results: AHA frequency was higher (36.8%) in probands, AR (37.8%) and HR (25%) than in NICD (1%), IHF (1%) or NBD (2.5%) (p=0.0001). AIDA frequency was higher in probands (8%, p=0.006), in AR (21.6%, p=0.00001) and in HR (14.6% p=0.00001) than in NICD (3.75%), IHF (2%) or NBD (0.3%). AHA positive status was associated with higher frequency of palpitation (p=0.004), ICD implantation (p=0.021), lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (p=0.004), AIDA positive status with both lower RV and LVEF (p=0.027 and p=0.027 respectively). AHA and/or AIDA positive status in the proband and/or at least one of the respective relatives was more common in familial (17/20, 85%) than in sporadic (10/22, 45%) pedigrees (p=0.007). Conclusions: Presence of AHA and AIDA provides evidence of autoimmunity in the majority of familial and in almost half of sporadic ARVC. In probands and in AR these antibodies were associated with disease severity features; longitudinal studies are needed to clarify whether they may predict ARVC development in HR or if they be a result of manifest ARVC

    Light-Cone Quantization and Hadron Structure

    In this talk, I review the use of the light-cone Fock expansion as a tractable and consistent description of relativistic many-body systems and bound states in quantum field theory and as a frame-independent representation of the physics of the QCD parton model. Nonperturbative methods for computing the spectrum and LC wavefunctions are briefly discussed. The light-cone Fock state representation of hadrons also describes quantum fluctuations containing intrinsic gluons, strangeness, and charm, and, in the case of nuclei, "hidden color". Fock state components of hadrons with small transverse size, such as those which dominate hard exclusive reactions, have small color dipole moments and thus diminished hadronic interactions; i.e., "color transparency". The use of light-cone Fock methods to compute loop amplitudes is illustrated by the example of the electron anomalous moment in QED. In other applications, such as the computation of the axial, magnetic, and quadrupole moments of light nuclei, the QCD relativistic Fock state description provides new insights which go well beyond the usual assumptions of traditional hadronic and nuclear physics.Comment: LaTex 36 pages, 3 figures.     Validated Intraclass Correlation Statistics to Test Item Performance Models

    A new method, with an application program in Matlab code, is proposed for testing item performance models on empirical databases. This method uses data intraclass correlation statistics as expected correlations to which one compares simple functions of correlations between model predictions and observed item performance. The method rests on a data population model whose validity for the considered data is suitably tested, and has been verified for three behavioural measure databases. Contrarily to usual model selection criteria, this method provides an effective way of testing under-fitting and over-fitting, answering the usually neglected question "does this model suitably account for these data?

    Ozone washing decreases strawberry susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea while maintaining antioxidant, optical and sensory quality

    This work aimed to evaluate the effect of ozone washing (maximum concentration 3.5 mgL-1- 5 and 15 min) on Botrytis cinerea decay, physicochemical parameters, bioactive compounds, in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activity, and sensory properties of strawberries cv. Albion throughout refrigerated storage at 5 1 C. A 5 min long ozonation delayed the onset of B. cinerea infection by 4 days, and significantly reduced its incidence as storage progressed (~17 % lesser than in control at day 8), without impairing physicochemical parameters or sensory quality. This treatment did not affect the antioxidant activity of strawberry extracts neither in in vitro (ORAC and ABTS assays) or in vivo assays using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism. Higher ozone doses did not achieve greater reduction of B. cinerea decay throughout the storage period.     Attitudes and behaviors of Japanese physicians concerning withholding and withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment for end-of-life patients: results from an Internet survey

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Evidence concerning how Japanese physicians think and behave in specific clinical situations that involve withholding or withdrawal of medical interventions for end-of-life or frail elderly patients is yet insufficient.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To analyze decisions and actions concerning the withholding/withdrawal of life-support care by Japanese physicians, we conducted cross-sectional web-based internet survey presenting three scenarios involving an elderly comatose patient following a severe stroke. Volunteer physicians were recruited for the survey through mailing lists and medical journals. The respondents answered questions concerning attitudes and behaviors regarding decision-making for the withholding/withdrawal of life-support care, namely, the initiation/withdrawal of tube feeding and respirator attachment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 304 responses analyzed, a majority felt that tube feeding should be initiated in these scenarios. Only 18% felt that a respirator should be attached when the patient had severe pneumonia and respiratory failure. Over half the respondents felt that tube feeding should not be withdrawn when the coma extended beyond 6 months. Only 11% responded that they actually withdrew tube feeding. Half the respondents perceived tube feeding in such a patient as a "life-sustaining treatment," whereas the other half disagreed. Physicians seeking clinical ethics consultation supported the withdrawal of tube feeding (OR, 6.4; 95% CI, 2.5–16.3; P < 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Physicians tend to harbor greater negative attitudes toward the withdrawal of life-support care than its withholding. On the other hand, they favor withholding invasive life-sustaining treatments such as the attachment of a respirator over less invasive and long-term treatments such as tube feeding. Discrepancies were demonstrated between attitudes and actual behaviors. Physicians may need systematic support for appropriate decision-making for end-of-life care.</p
