MRI-based Surgical Planning for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
The most common reason for spinal surgery in elderly patients is lumbar
spinal stenosis(LSS). For LSS, treatment decisions based on clinical and
radiological information as well as personal experience of the surgeon shows
large variance. Thus a standardized support system is of high value for a more
objective and reproducible decision. In this work, we develop an automated
algorithm to localize the stenosis causing the symptoms of the patient in
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). With 22 MRI features of each of five spinal
levels of 321 patients, we show it is possible to predict the location of
lesion triggering the symptoms. To support this hypothesis, we conduct an
automated analysis of labeled and unlabeled MRI scans extracted from 788
patients. We confirm quantitatively the importance of radiological information
and provide an algorithmic pipeline for working with raw MRI scans
A massive reservoir of low-excitation molecular gas at high redshift
Molecular hydrogen is an important component of galaxies because it fuels
star formation and accretion onto AGN, the two processes that generate the
large infrared luminosities of gas-rich galaxies. Observations of spectral-line
emission from the tracer molecule CO are used to probe the properties of this
gas. But the lines that have been studied in the local Universe, mostly the
lower rotational transitions of J = 1-0 and J = 2-1, have hitherto been
unobservable in high-redshift galaxies. Instead, higher transitions have been
used, although the densities and temperatures required to excite these higher
transitions may not be reached by much of the gas. As a result, past
observations may have underestimated the total amount of molecular gas by a
substantial amount. Here we report the discovery of large amounts of
low-excitation molecular gas around the infrared-luminous quasar, APM
08279+5255 at z = 3.91, using the two lowest excitation lines of 12CO (J = 1-0
and J = 2-1). The maps confirm the presence of hot and dense gas near the
nucleus, and reveal an extended reservoir of molecular gas with low excitation
that is 10 to 100 times more massive than the gas traced by higher-excitation
observations. This raises the possibility that significant amounts of
low-excitation molecular gas may lurk in the environments of high-redshift (z >

Bats Use Magnetite to Detect the Earth's Magnetic Field
While the role of magnetic cues for compass orientation has been confirmed in numerous animals, the mechanism of detection is still debated. Two hypotheses have been proposed, one based on a light dependent mechanism, apparently used by birds and another based on a âcompass organelleâ containing the iron oxide particles magnetite (Fe3O4). Bats have recently been shown to use magnetic cues for compass orientation but the method by which they detect the Earth's magnetic field remains unknown. Here we use the classic âKalmijn-Blakemoreâ pulse re-magnetization experiment, whereby the polarity of cellular magnetite is reversed. The results demonstrate that the big brown bat Eptesicus fuscus uses single domain magnetite to detect the Earths magnetic field and the response indicates a polarity based receptor. Polarity detection is a prerequisite for the use of magnetite as a compass and suggests that big brown bats use magnetite to detect the magnetic field as a compass. Our results indicate the possibility that sensory cells in bats contain freely rotating magnetite particles, which appears not to be the case in birds. It is crucial that the ultrastructure of the magnetite containing magnetoreceptors is described for our understanding of magnetoreception in animals
K-edge structure in shock-compressed chlorinated parylene
We have carried out a series of experiments to measure the Cl K-absorption edge for shock-compressed samples of chlorinated parylene. Colliding shocks allowed us to compress samples up to four times the initial density with temperatures up to 10 eV. Red shifts in the edge of about 10 eV have been measured. We have compared the measured shifts to analytical modelling using the StewartâPyatt model and adaptions of it, combined with estimates of density and temperature based on hydrodynamic modelling. Modelling of the edge position using density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) was also used and it was found that good agreement was only achieved when the DFT simulations assumed conditions of lower temperature and slightly higher density than indicated by hydrodynamic simulations using a tabular equation of state
The cross on rings performed by an Olympic champion
The cross is a key skill in Male Artistic Gymnastics rings routines. However, few researches were found about this skill. There is knowledge about the forces needed to perform the cross, or about muscles activation, separately. The aim of this paper was to accomplish a comprehensive research about the biomechanics of cross on rings, in order to obtain a descriptive model about this skill. Therefore, the currently Olympic champion on rings event volunteered in this research. He performed three crosses with the usual apparatus in his training gym. The measurement methods were combined: One digital video camera, one strain gauge in each cable and surface electromyography of nine right shoulder muscles were used. Statistical analyses
were performed by parametric and non parametric tests and descriptive statistics. Symmetry values were calculated for shoulder angles and cables of right and left side. Coefficient of variation of muscle activation and co contraction were verified. Within gymnast variability was calculated using biological coefficient of variation (BCV), discretely for kinematic measures. Low variability values of shoulder angles and cable forces were verified and low values of asymmetry as well. Muscle activation varied according to muscle function, while co-contraction values were different among trials. These results pointed out the
characteristics of the cross performed by an elite gymnast. Knowledge about the characteristics of cross can inform coaches, practitioners and clinicians how a successful skill should be presented
Critical review of the United Kingdomâs âgold standardâ survey of public attitudes to science
Since 2000, the UK government has funded surveys aimed at understanding the UK publicâs attitudes toward science, scientists, and science policy. Known as the Public Attitudes to Science series, these surveys and their predecessors have long been used in UK science communication policy, practice, and scholarship as a source of authoritative knowledge about science-related attitudes and behaviors. Given their importance and the significant public funding investment they represent, detailed academic scrutiny of the studies is needed. In this essay, we critically review the most recently published Public Attitudes to Science survey (2014), assessing the robustness of its methods and claims. The review casts doubt on the quality of key elements of the Public Attitudes to Science 2014 survey data and analysis while highlighting the importance of robust quantitative social research methodology. Our analysis comparing the main sample and booster sample for young people demonstrates that quota sampling cannot be assumed equivalent to probability-based sampling techniques
Lay perceptions of evidence-based information â a qualitative evaluation of a website for back pain sufferers
BACKGROUND: In an evidence-informed patient choice the patient has access to research-based information about the effectiveness of health care options and is encouraged to use this information in treatment decisions. This concept has seen growing popularity in recent years. However, we still know relatively little about users' attitudes to the use of research-based information, possibly because people have been unexposed to this type of information. After developing the BackInfo website where the results of Cochrane systematic reviews on the effects of low back pain were adapted and presented to lay users we evaluated how users responded to this information. METHODS: Focus group meetings were held with 18 chronic back pain sufferers, after they had been sent a link to the website before the meetings. RESULTS: The focus groups suggest that the most important challenges to the use of BackInfo's research-based information are not primarily tied to the comprehension or presentation of the information, but are mainly associated with participants' attitudes towards the credibility of research and researchers, and the applicability of research results to themselves as individuals. Possible explanations for participants' lack of trust in research and their apparent difficulties in applying this research to their own situations include aspects that may be typical for the general public including the media's presentation of research, and a lack of familiarity with and feelings of distance to research evidence. Other aspects may be typical for patient groups with chronic and unclear medical conditions, such as a lack of trust in the health care establishment in general. CONCLUSION: In order to enhance the credibility and applicability of research evidence, providers of research-based information could explore a number of possibilities including the use of including personal stories to illustrate the research outcomes
PrĂĄticas terapĂȘuticas tradicionais: uso e conhecimento de plantas do cerrado no estado de Pernambuco (Nordeste do Brasil)
Este trabalho visa registrar as prĂĄticas terapĂȘuticas da comunidade CatolĂ© utilizando a diversidade local das plantas medicinais verificando a versatilidade das espĂ©cies, consenso de uso e conhecimento dos informantes. Foram registradas 46 espĂ©cies nativas com fins medicinais, pertencentes a 42 gĂȘneros e 26 famĂlias com destaque para Fabaceae. Dez espĂ©cimes apresentaram grande versatilidade de uso, no entanto Ximennia americana L. e Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth., apresentaram os maiores valores de IR (2,0 e 1,65). As indicaçÔes terapĂȘuticas foram agrupadas em 15 categorias de sistemas corporais, com maior fator de consenso entre os informantes para; Doenças infecciosas e parasitĂĄrias (1,0), Transtorno do sistema respiratĂłrio (0,82) e Doenças das glĂąndulas endĂłcrinas, da nutrição e do metabolismo (0,81). Devido Ă diversidade de espĂ©cies nativas registradas, pode-se concluir que a preservação dessa ĂĄrea Ă© de grande importĂąncia para a conservação da biodiversidade local e os informantes envolvidos possuem um vasto conhecimento da vegetação contribuindo para o conhecimento de plantas potencialmente Ășteis do cerrado
Transient psychosis due to painless thyroiditis in a patient with anxiety disorder: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>There are few reports on thyrotoxic psychosis caused by diseases other than Graves' disease or toxic nodular goiter.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 64-year-old Japanese woman was treated for anxiety disorder in our clinic for 10 years. She had five episodes of transient psychosis during the first five years. When she developed psychosis without neck pain 10 years after her first visit, a laboratory reexamination revealed that she had subclinical hyperthyroidism, and tested positive for antithyroid autoantibodies, negative for thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibody and had decreased radioactive iodine uptake. She was diagnosed as having painless thyroiditis. The hyperthyroidism disappeared within a month, and the psychosis lasted for three months.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of psychosis due to painless thyroiditis-induced hyperthyroidism. Physical symptoms of painless thyroiditis are often so mild that careful differential diagnosis is necessary in the cases of transient psychosis.</p
Cold gas accretion in galaxies
Evidence for the accretion of cold gas in galaxies has been rapidly
accumulating in the past years. HI observations of galaxies and their
environment have brought to light new facts and phenomena which are evidence of
ongoing or recent accretion:
1) A large number of galaxies are accompanied by gas-rich dwarfs or are
surrounded by HI cloud complexes, tails and filaments. It may be regarded as
direct evidence of cold gas accretion in the local universe. It is probably the
same kind of phenomenon of material infall as the stellar streams observed in
the halos of our galaxy and M31. 2) Considerable amounts of extra-planar HI
have been found in nearby spiral galaxies. While a large fraction of this gas
is produced by galactic fountains, it is likely that a part of it is of
extragalactic origin. 3) Spirals are known to have extended and warped outer
layers of HI. It is not clear how these have formed, and how and for how long
the warps can be sustained. Gas infall has been proposed as the origin. 4) The
majority of galactic disks are lopsided in their morphology as well as in their
kinematics. Also here recent accretion has been advocated as a possible cause.
In our view, accretion takes place both through the arrival and merging of
gas-rich satellites and through gas infall from the intergalactic medium (IGM).
The infall may have observable effects on the disk such as bursts of star
formation and lopsidedness. We infer a mean ``visible'' accretion rate of cold
gas in galaxies of at least 0.2 Msol/yr. In order to reach the accretion rates
needed to sustain the observed star formation (~1 Msol/yr), additional infall
of large amounts of gas from the IGM seems to be required.Comment: To appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics Reviews. 34 pages.
