Kaon Weak Decays in Chiral Theories

The ten nonleptonic weak decays K→2πK \to 2\pi, K→3πK \to 3\pi, KL→2γK_L \to 2\gamma, KS→2γK_S \to 2\gamma, KL→π∘2γK_L \to \pi^\circ 2\gamma, are predicted for a chiral pole model based on the linear sigma model theory which automatically satisfies the partial conservation of axial current (PCAC) hypothesis. These predictions, agreeing with data to the 5% level and containing no or at most one free parameter, are compared with the results of chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). The latter ChPT approach to one-loop level is known to contain at least four free parameters and then predicts a KL→π∘γγK_L \to \pi^\circ \gamma\gamma rate which is 60% shy of the experimental value. This suggests that ChPT is an unsatisfactory approach towards predicting kaon weak decays.Comment: 12 pages, 8 eps figure

Self-perpetuating rationalization : state intervention in the use of natural resources

Towards the end of the 1980's, the stock of Atlantic-Norwegian cod collapsed. The 'cod crisis' caught most people by surprise, maybe because the fisheries of the region had been taken for granted; people have 'always' fished in North Norway and it seemed almost absurd that they should suddenly be cut off from this activity. In different ways, the crisis - and all the consequences it had - invited reflection over the cultural, economic and social significance of the fisheries of North Norway. Even though this thesis focuses on a few selected consequences of the crisis, it must be considered such a reflection. Specifically, I reflect over the management consequences of the crisis by discussing the relationship between the economic behavior of fishermen in one community in North Norway and the management of cod. In this fashion, I intend to identify and formulate some of the behavioral traits of current resource use. I have formulated the project in this fashion because I think that such a perspective can complement some of the other discussions that can be found among social scientists who are interested in the use of natural resource

Continuous dependence estimates for nonlinear fractional convection-diffusion equations

We develop a general framework for finding error estimates for convection-diffusion equations with nonlocal, nonlinear, and possibly degenerate diffusion terms. The equations are nonlocal because they involve fractional diffusion operators that are generators of pure jump Levy processes (e.g. the fractional Laplacian). As an application, we derive continuous dependence estimates on the nonlinearities and on the Levy measure of the diffusion term. Estimates of the rates of convergence for general nonlinear nonlocal vanishing viscosity approximations of scalar conservation laws then follow as a corollary. Our results both cover, and extend to new equations, a large part of the known error estimates in the literature.Comment: In this version we have corrected Example 3.4 explaining the link with the results in [51,59

The discontinuous Galerkin method for fractional degenerate convection-diffusion equations

We propose and study discontinuous Galerkin methods for strongly degenerate convection-diffusion equations perturbed by a fractional diffusion (L\'evy) operator. We prove various stability estimates along with convergence results toward properly defined (entropy) solutions of linear and nonlinear equations. Finally, the qualitative behavior of solutions of such equations are illustrated through numerical experiments

Sex, drugs, and bitcoin:How much illegal activity Is financed through cryptocurrencies?

© The Author(s) 2019. Cryptocurrencies are among the largest unregulated markets in the world. We find that approximately one-quarter of bitcoin users are involved in illegal activity. We estimate that around 76 billion of illegal activity per year involve bitcoin (46% of bitcoin transactions), which is close to the scale of the U.S. and European markets for illegal drugs. The illegal share of bitcoin activity declines with mainstream interest in bitcoin and with the emergence of more opaque cryptocurrencies. The techniques developed in this paper have applications in cryptocurrency surveillance. Our findings suggest that cryptocurrencies are transforming the black markets by enabling black e-commerce. The Cocktail Party Listener

    Get PDF
A complex computational model of the human ability to listen to certain signals in preference of others, also called the cocktail party phenomenon, is built on the basis of surveys into the relevant psychological, DSP, and neural network literature. This model is basically binaural and as such it makes use of both spectral data and spatial data in determining which speaker to listen to. The model uses two neural networks for filtering and speaker identification. Results from some experimentation with type and architecture of these networks are presented along with the results of the model. These results indicate that the model has a distinctive ability to focus on a particular speaker of choice
