Fire extinguishing apparatus having a slidable mass for a penetrator nozzle
A fire extinguishing apparatus for delivering an extinguishing agent through a tarrier surrounding a structure into its interior includes an elongated tubular nozzle body which has a pointed penetrating head carried on one end of the tubular body. A source of extinguishing agent coupled to the opposite end of the tubular body is fed through and passes through passages adjacent the head for delivering the extinguishing agent to the interior of the structure. A slidable mass is carried on the tubular body on a remote end of the tubular body from the penetrating head. By manipulating the slidable mass and bringing such in contact with an abutment the force imparted to the tubular body causes the head to penetrate the structure
Towards Laser Driven Hadron Cancer Radiotherapy: A Review of Progress
It has been known for about sixty years that proton and heavy ion therapy is
a very powerful radiation procedure for treating tumours. It has an innate
ability to irradiate tumours with greater doses and spatial selectivity
compared with electron and photon therapy and hence is a tissue sparing
procedure. For more than twenty years powerful lasers have generated high
energy beams of protons and heavy ions and hence it has been frequently
speculated that lasers could be used as an alternative to RF accelerators to
produce the particle beams necessary for cancer therapy. The present paper
reviews the progress made towards laser driven hadron cancer therapy and what
has still to be accomplished to realise its inherent enormous potential.Comment: 40 pages, 24 figure
Ultraviolet observations of the X-ray photoionized wind of Cygnus X-1 during X-ray soft/high state
(Shortened) Ultraviolet observations of the black hole X-ray binary Cygnus
X-1 were obtained using the STIS on HSTubble. We detect P Cygni line features
show strong, broad absorption components when the X-ray source is behind the
companion star and noticeably weaker absorption when the X-ray source is
between us and the companion star. We fit the P Cygni profiles using the SEI
method applied to a spherically symmetric stellar wind subject to X-ray
photoionization from the black hole. The Si IV doublet provides the most
reliable estimates of the parameters of the wind and X-ray illumination. The
velocity increases with radius according to
, with and
km s.The microturbulent velocity was
km s. Our fit implies a ratio of X-ray luminosity to wind mass-loss rate
of L, measured at = 4.8. Our
models determine parameters that may be used to estimate the accretion rate
onto the black hole and independently predict the X-ray luminosity. Our
predicted L matches that determined by contemporaneous RXTE ASM remarkably
well, but is a factor of 3 lower than the rate according to
Bondi-Hoyle-Littleton spherical wind accretion. We suggest that some of the
energy of accretion may go into powering a jet.Comment: 34 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Ap
A study of methods to predict and measure the transmission of sound through the walls of light aircraft
Several research investigations are discussed. The development of a numerical/empirical noise source identification procedure using boundary element techniques, the identification of structure-borne paths using structural intensity and finite element methods, the development of a design optimization numerical procedure to be used to study active noise control in three-dimensional geometries, and the measurement of the dynamic properties of acoustical foams and the incorporation of these properties in models governing three-dimensional wave propagation in foams are discussed
How neutral is the intergalactic medium surrounding the redshift z=7.085 quasar ULAS J1120+0641?
The quasar ULAS J1120+0641 at redshift z=7.085 has a highly ionised near zone
which is smaller than those around quasars of similar luminosity at z~6. The
spectrum also exhibits evidence for a damping wing extending redward of the
systemic Lya redshift. We use radiative transfer simulations in a cosmological
context to investigate the implications for the ionisation state of the
inhomogeneous IGM surrounding this quasar. Our simulations show that the
transmission profile is consistent with an IGM in the vicinity of the quasar
with a volume averaged HI fraction of f_HI>0.1 and that ULAS J1120+0641 has
been bright for 10^6--10^7 yr. The observed spectrum is also consistent with
smaller IGM neutral fractions, f_HI ~ 10^-3--10-4, if a damped Lya system in an
otherwise highly ionised IGM lies within 5 proper Mpc of the quasar. This is,
however, predicted to occur in only ~5 per cent of our simulated sight-lines
for a bright phase of 10^6--10^7 yr. Unless ULAS J1120+0641 grows during a
previous optically obscured phase, the low age inferred for the quasar adds to
the theoretical challenge of forming a 2x10^9 M_sol black hole at this high
redshift.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS letter
Multilevel blocking approach to the fermion sign problem in path-integral Monte Carlo simulations
A general algorithm toward the solution of the fermion sign problem in
finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations has been formulated for
discretized fermion path integrals with nearest-neighbor interactions in the
Trotter direction. This multilevel approach systematically implements a simple
blocking strategy in a recursive manner to synthesize the sign cancellations
among different fermionic paths throughout the whole configuration space. The
practical usefulness of the method is demonstrated for interacting electrons in
a quantum dot.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, incl. two figure
Crossover from Fermi liquid to Wigner molecule behavior in quantum dots
The crossover from weak to strong correlations in parabolic quantum dots at
zero magnetic field is studied by numerically exact path-integral Monte Carlo
simulations for up to eight electrons. By the use of a multilevel blocking
algorithm, the simulations are carried out free of the fermion sign problem. We
obtain a universal crossover only governed by the density parameter . For
, the data are consistent with a Wigner molecule description, while
for , Fermi liquid behavior is recovered. The crossover value is surprisingly small.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 3 figures, corrected Tabl
Mind the gap: Patterns of red blood cell product usage in South Africa, 2014 - 2019
Background. A key component of any successful healthcare system is the availability of sufficient, safe blood products delivered in an equitable manner. South Africa (SA) has a two-tiered healthcare system with public and privately funded sectors. Blood utilisation data for both sectors are lacking. Evaluation of blood utilisation patterns in each healthcare sector will enable implementation of systems to bring about more equality.Objectives. To conduct a critical evaluation of red blood cell (RBC) product utilisation patterns at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).Methods. Operationally collected data from RBC requests submitted to SANBS blood banks for the period 1 January 2014 - 31 March 2019 were used to determine temporal RBC product utilisation patterns by healthcare sector. Demographic patterns were determined, and per capita RBC utilisation trends calculated.Results. Of the 2Â 356Â 441 transfusion events, 65.9% occurred in the public and 34.1% in the private sector. Public sector patients were younger (median (interquartile range (IQR)) 33 (22 - 49) years) than in the private sector (median (IQR) 54 (37 - 68) years), and mainly female in both sectors (66.2% in the public sector and 53.4% in the private sector). Between 2014 and 2018, per capita RBC utilisation decreased from 11.9 to 11.0/1 000 population in the public sector, but increased from 34.8 to 38.2/1 000 population in the private sector.Conclusions. We confirmed distinctly different RBC utilisation patterns between the healthcare sectors in SA. Possible drivers for these differences may be healthcare access, differing patient populations and prescriber habits. Better understanding of these drivers may help inform equitable public health policy
Possible evidence for an inverted temperature-density relation in the intergalactic medium from the flux distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest
We compare the improved measurement of the Lya forest flux probability
distribution at 1.7<z<3.2 presented by Kim et al. (2007) to a large set of
hydrodynamical simulations of the Lya forest with different cosmological
parameters and thermal histories. The simulations are in good agreement with
the observational data if the temperature-density relation for the low density
intergalactic medium (IGM), T=T_0 Delta^{gamma-1}, is either close to
isothermal or inverted (gamma<1). Our results suggest that the voids in the IGM
may be significantly hotter and the thermal state of the low density IGM may be
substantially more complex than is usually assumed at these redshifts. We
discuss radiative transfer effects which alter the spectral shape of ionising
radiation during the epoch of HeII reionisation as a possible physical
mechanism for achieving an inverted temperature-density relation at z~3.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS following

Golden gravitational lensing systems from the Sloan Lens ACS Survey. I. SDSS J1538+5817: one lens for two sources
We present a lensing and photometric study of the exceptional system SDSS
J1538+5817, identified by the SLACS survey. The lens is a luminous elliptical
at redshift z=0.143. Using HST public images in two different filters, the
presence of two background sources lensed into an Einstein ring and a double
system is ascertained. Our new spectroscopic observations, performed at the
NOT, reveal that the two sources are located at the same redshift z=0.531. We
investigate the total mass distribution of the lens between 1 and 4 kpc from
the galaxy center by means of parametric and non-parametric lensing codes that
describe the multiple images as point-like objects. Several disparate lensing
models agree on: (1) reproducing accurately the observed image positions; (2)
predicting a nearly axisymmetric total mass distribution, centered and oriented
as the light distribution; (3) measuring a value of 8.11 x 10^{10} M_{Sun} for
the total mass projected within the Einstein radius of 2.5 kpc; (4) estimating
a total mass density profile slightly steeper than an isothermal one. A fit of
the SDSS multicolor photometry with CSP models provides a value of 20 x 10^{10}
M_{Sun} for the total stellar mass of the galaxy and of 0.9 for the fraction of
projected luminous over total mass enclosed inside the Einstein radius. By
combining lensing and photometric mass measurements, we differentiate the lens
mass content in terms of luminous and dark matter components. This
two-component modeling, which is viable only in extraordinary systems like SDSS
J1538+5817, leads to a description of the global properties of the galaxy dark
matter halo. Extending these results to a larger number of lenses would improve
considerably our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution processes in
the LCDM scenario.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journa
