    The role of earth-based observations of asteroids during the next decade

    Present reconnaissance studies of asteroids shift ground based programs to more specialized, intensive studies of selected individual bodies and special classes. Two powerful techniques--radar and mid-IR spectroscopy--have yet to be widely applied to asteroids; high priority should be given to: (1) search programs with a large Schmidt telescope (especially for Mars- and Earth-approaching bodies); (2) a moderate resolution visible and near-IR spectrophotometric survey of at least half the asteroids; (3) high resolution spectrophotometry and radiometry of unusual objects; (4) radar studies of representative main belt asteroids; and (5) application of the full complement of astrophysical techniques to objects of high scientific interest and to potential space mission targets. The infrared astronomical satellite also has high potential for contributing to asteroid science

    Innovation Influences Liking for Chocolates Among Neophilic Consumers

    The fear of trying new foods is a major barrier for entry for innovative ingredients, foods, flavors, or cuisines into the market place. We explored the relationship between perceived innovation and liking for chocolates and degree of neophobia. Line scales were used to measure: innovation, liking, and perceived dollar value for three chocolate confections. One was a traditional confection (palette dâ€Čor), and two others were designed to be more innovative (white miso with dark chocolate and white chocolate with candied black olive). An analysis of variance found that panelists (n=44) perceived significant (p\u3c0.01) differences among the chocolates in innovation, and liking, but not dollar value or estimated caloric content. The chocolate rated as the most innovative was also rated as the least liked. This finding is significant since the mean neophobia score of our subjects was quite low and very few of them would have been classified as neophobic. This current work suggests that acceptance of innovative new foods is dependent, in part, upon factors that transcend neophobic mindsets. Chefs and product developers should be aware of the fact that even among neophilic consumers who are quite willing to consume novel foods, there is a possibility that a food might be too innovative, resulting in a negative impact on liking

    Harold Jeffreys's Theory of Probability Revisited

    Published exactly seventy years ago, Jeffreys's Theory of Probability (1939) has had a unique impact on the Bayesian community and is now considered to be one of the main classics in Bayesian Statistics as well as the initiator of the objective Bayes school. In particular, its advances on the derivation of noninformative priors as well as on the scaling of Bayes factors have had a lasting impact on the field. However, the book reflects the characteristics of the time, especially in terms of mathematical rigor. In this paper we point out the fundamental aspects of this reference work, especially the thorough coverage of testing problems and the construction of both estimation and testing noninformative priors based on functional divergences.     The Orbital and Absolute Magnitude Distributions of Main Belt Asteroids

    We have developed a model-independent analytical method for debiasing the four-dimensional (a,e,i,H) distribution obtained in any asteroid observation program and have applied the technique to results obtained with the 0.9m Spacewatch Telescope. From 1992 to 1995 Spacewatch observed ~3740 deg^2 near the ecliptic and made observations of more than 60,000 asteroids to a limiting magnitude of V~21. The debiased semi-major axis and inclination distributions of Main Belt asteroids in this sample with 11.5<= H <16 match the distributions of the known asteroids with H <11.5. The absolute magnitude distribution was studied in the range 8< H <17.5. We have found that the set of known asteroids is complete to about absolute magnitudes 12.75, 12.25 and 11.25 in the inner, middle and outer regions of the belt respectively. The number distribution as a function of absolute magnitude cannot be represented by a single power-law (10^{alpha H}) in any region. We were able to define broad ranges in H in each part of the belt where alpha was nearly constant. Within these ranges of H the slope does not correspond to the value of 0.5 expected for an equilibrium cascade in self-similar collisions (Dohnanyi, 1971). The value of alpha varies with absolute magnitude and shows a `kink' in all regions of the belt for H~13. This absolute magnitude corresponds to a diameter ranging from about 8.5 to 12.5 km depending on the albedo or region of the belt.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. published in Icaru

    Effects of hunger state on flavour pleasantness conditioning at home: flavour-nutrient learning vs. flavour-flavour learning

    This study examined acquired liking of flavour preferences through flavour-flavour and flavour-nutrient learning under hungry or sated conditions in a naturalistic setting. Each participant consumed one of three versions of a test drink at home either before lunch or after lunch: minimally sweetened (CONTROL: 3% sucrose, 40kcal), artificially sweetened (3% sucrose 40kcal plus artificial sweeteners ASPARTAME) and sucrose-sweetened (SUCROSE: 9.9% sugar, 132kcal). The test drink was an uncarbonated peach-flavoured iced tea served in visually identical drink cans (330ml). Participants preselected as "sweet likers" evaluated the minimally sweetened flavoured drink (conditioned stimulus, CS) in the same state (hungry or sated) in which they consumed the test drink at home. Overall, liking for the CS flavour increased in participants who consumed the SUCROSE drink, however, this increase in liking was significantly larger when tested and trained hungry than sated, consistent with a flavour-nutrient model. Overall increases in pleasantness for the CS flavour in participants who consumed the SUCROSE drink when sated or the ASPARTAME drink independent of hunger state, suggest that flavour-flavour learning also occurred. These results are discussed in light of current learning models of flavour preference

    A revised asteroid polarization-albedo relationship using WISE/NEOWISE data

    We present a reanalysis of the relationship between asteroid albedo and polarization properties using the albedos derived from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. We find that the function that best describes this relation is a three-dimensional linear fit in the space of log(albedo)-log(polarization slope)-log(minimum polarization). When projected to two dimensions the parameters of the fit are consistent with those found in previous work. We also define p* as the quantity of maximal polarization variation when compared with albedo and present the best fitting albedo-p* relation. Some asteroid taxonomic types stand out in this three-dimensional space, notably the E, B, and M Tholen types, while others cluster in clumps coincident with the S- and C-complex bodies. We note that both low albedo and small (D<30 km) asteroids are under-represented in the polarimetric sample, and we encourage future polarimetric surveys to focus on these bodies.Comment: 16 pages, Accepted to Ap
