    Pregnancy related protection against breast cancer depends on length of gestation

    In a prospective study of 694 657 parous women in Norway, 5474 developed breast cancer after their first birth. If the first pregnancy lasted less than 32 weeks, the risk was 22% (95% confidence interval, −3% to 53%) greater than after a pregnancy of 40 weeks or more, with a significant declining trend in risk (P for trend=0.02)

    Atlantic salmon aquaculture relies on continuous supply of high quality eggs. Broodfish nutrition and manipulation of ovulation time (photoperiod and temperature) are key factors. The optimum feeding period with broodfish diet has not been investigated before. The present study examined how feeding period with broodfish diet (9 vs. 17 months) interacted with manipulation of ovulation time (early (Nov), normal (Dec), late (Feb)) on broodstock egg production capacity and egg quality in two-sea-winter female Atlantic salmon (∼12 kg).     Micronutrient supplementation affects transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of lipid metabolism in a dose-dependent manner

    Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) have been less well studied compared to macronutrients (fats, proteins, and carbohydrates) although they play important roles in growth, metabolism, and maintenance of tissues. Hence, there is growing interest to understand the influence of micronutrients across various aspects in nutritional research. In the last two decades, aquaculture feeds have been shifted to containing more plant-based materials to meet the increasing demand and maintain the sustainability in the industry. In cultured fish, changing raw materials in feeds alters the requirement levels of micronutrients. A recent whole life cycle feeding trial of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) with graded levels of micronutrient packages has concluded that the levels of several B-vitamins and microminerals need to be increased from the current recommendation levels for optimal growth and fish welfare when plant-based diets are used. Here, we show the effect of micronutrient supplementation on transcriptional and epigenetic regulation by using liver samples from the same feeding trial. Specifically, our aim is to reveal the mechanisms of altered cell metabolism, which results in improved growth performance by micronutrient surpluses, at gene expression and DNA methylation levels. Our results strongly indicate that micronutrient supplementation suppresses gene expression in lipid metabolism in a dose-dependent manner and broadly affects DNA methylation in cell adhesion and cell signalling. In particular, it increases DNA methylation levels on the acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha promoter in a concentration-dependent manner, which further suggests that acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha is an upstream epigenetic regulator controlling its downstream lipid biosynthesis activities.     A full life cycle (parr to harvest) study of growth and performance was conducted in Atlantic salmon fed diets high in plant ingredients supplemented with graded levels of a nutrient premix (NP), containing selected amino acids, taurine, cholesterol, vitamins and minerals to re-evaluate current nutrient recommendations. Triplicate groups were fed one of three NP levels included at 1×, 2× and 4×, where 1× corresponds to recommendations of NRC (2011). Whole body and specific tissue concentrations of nutrients were monitored throughout the experiment as requirement markers. Growth in parr was significantly enhanced in 2xNP, but restricted in 4xNP, while in post-smolts growth was positively correlated with NP level. Spinal deformity decreased linearly with increased NP level in both smolt and post-smolts. When fishmeal and fish oil are present at very low levels, as in the present study, we found beneficial effects with moderate increased levels of the B-vitamins niacin, riboflavin and cobalamin. Further, vitamin C should be increased, based on metabolic responses, although it did not influence growth. Increased Zn and Se affected fish metabolism in a positive manner. Alterations in hepatic transcriptome profiles and expression of specific genes of metabolic pathways were evident in response to micronutrient supplementation level. Collectively, increasing the levels of the micro-nutrient package to a too high level, showed a negative effect and cannot be recommended. NRC (2011) recommendations should therefore be revised for diets in which plant ingredients form the major part of the formulation

    Reference population for international comparisons and time trend surveillance of preterm delivery proportions in three countries

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>International comparison and time trend surveillance of preterm delivery rates is complex. New techniques that could facilitate interpretation of such rates are needed.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied all live births and stillbirths (≥ 28 weeks gestation) registered in the medical birth registers in Sweden, Denmark and Norway from 1995 through 2004. Gestational age was determined by best estimate. A reference population of pregnant women was designed using the following criteria: 1) maternal age 20–35, 2) primiparity, 3) spontaneously conceived pregnancy, 4) singleton pregnancy and 5) mother born in the respective country. National preterm delivery rate, preterm delivery rate in the reference population and rate of spontaneous preterm delivery in the reference population were calculated for each country.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The total national preterm delivery rate (< 37 completed gestational weeks), increased in both Denmark (5.3% to 6.1%, p < 0.001) and Norway (6.0% to 6.4%, p = 0.006), but remained unchanged in Sweden, during 1995–2004. In Denmark, the preterm delivery rate in the reference population (5.3% to 6.3%, p < 0.001) and the spontaneous preterm delivery rate in the reference population (4.4% to 6.8%, p < 0.001) increased significantly. No similar increase was evident in Norway. In Sweden, rates in the reference population remained stable.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Reference populations can facilitate overview and thereby explanations for changing preterm delivery rates. The model also permits comparisons over time. This model may in its simplicity prove to be a valuable supplement to assessments of national preterm delivery rates for public health surveillance.</p

    Hypertension in pregnancy and risk of coronary heart disease and stroke: A prospective study in a large UK cohort.

    BACKGROUND: Many studies investigating long-term vascular disease risk associated with hypertensive pregnancies examined risks in relatively young women among whom vascular disease is uncommon. We examined the prospective relation between a history of hypertension during pregnancy and coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke in middle-aged UK women. METHODS: In 1996-2001, 1.1 million parous women (mean age=56years) without vascular disease at baseline reported their history of hypertension during pregnancy and other factors. They were followed for incident CHD and stroke (hospitalisation or death). Adjusted relative risks (RRs) were calculated using Cox regression. RESULTS: Twenty-six percent (290,008/1.1 million) reported having had a hypertensive pregnancy; 27% (79,163/290,008) of women with hypertensive pregnancy, but only 10% (82,145/815,560) of those without hypertensive pregnancy, reported being treated for hypertension at baseline. Mean follow-up was 11.6years (mean ages at diagnosis/N of events: CHD=65years/N=68,161, ischaemic stroke=67years/N=8365, haemorrhagic stroke=64years/N=5702). Overall, the RRs (95% confidence interval [CI]) of incident disease in women with hypertensive pregnancy versus those without such history were: CHD=1.29 (1.27-1.31), ischaemic stroke=1.29 (1.23-1.35), and haemorrhagic stroke=1.14 (1.07-1.21). However, among women with hypertensive pregnancy who were not taking hypertension treatment at baseline, their RRs (95% CI) were only modestly increased: CHD=1.17 (1.14-1.19), ischaemic stroke=1.18 (1.11-1.25), and haemorrhagic stroke=1.09 (1.02-1.18). CONCLUSION: Hypertension during pregnancy was associated with increased CHD and stroke incidence in middle age, largely because such women also had hypertension in their 50s and 60s, which has a substantially greater effect on vascular disease risk than hypertension during pregnancy without hypertension later in life
