A magnetic damper for first mode vibration reduction in multimass flexible rotors
Many rotating machines such as compressors, turbines and pumps have long thin shafts with resulting vibration problems, and would benefit from additional damping near the center of the shaft. Magnetic dampers have the potential to be employed in these machines because they can operate in the working fluid environment unlike conventional bearings. An experimental test rig is described which was set up with a long thin shaft and several masses to represent a flexible shaft machine. An active magnetic damper was placed in three locations: near the midspan, near one end disk, and close to the bearing. With typical control parameter settings, the midspan location reduced the first mode vibration 82 percent, the disk location reduced it 75 percent and the bearing location attained a 74 percent reduction. Magnetic damper stiffness and damping values used to obtain these reductions were only a few percent of the bearing stiffness and damping values. A theoretical model of both the rotor and the damper was developed and compared to the measured results. The agreement was good
Wheat glutenin subunits and dough elasticity: findings of the EUROWHEAT project
Detailed studies of wheat glutenin subunits have provided novel details of their molecular structures and interactions which allow the development of a model to explain their role in determining the visco-elastic properties of gluten and dough. The construction and analysis of near-isogenic and transgenic lines expressing novel subunit combinations or increased amounts of specific subunits allows differences in gluten properties to be related to the structures and properties of individual subunits, with potential benefits for the production of cultivars with improved properties for food processing or novel end user
Experimental measurement and calculation of losses in planar radial magnetic bearings
The loss mechanisms associated with magnetic bearings have yet to be adequately characterized or modeled analytically and thus pose a problem for the designer of magnetic bearings. This problem is particularly important for aerospace applications where low power consumption of components is critical. Also, losses are expected to be large for high speed operation. The iron losses in magnetic bearings can be divided into eddy current losses and hysteresis losses. While theoretical models for these losses exist for transformer and electric motor applications, they have not been verified for magnetic bearings. This paper presents the results from a low speed experimental test rig and compares them to calculated values from existing theory. Experimental data was taken over a range of 90 to 2,800 rpm for several bias currents and two different pole configurations. With certain assumptions agreement between measured and calculated power losses was within 16 percent for a number of test configurations
Genome-wide association study for polledness, horn shape, and wool traits in Original Valachian sheep
The Original Valachian sheep is an endangered Slovak national breed that is well adapted to high-altitude pastures. The sheep can be horned with various shapes and can have multi-coloured or completely white or black wool. Breeders are interested in learning about the genetic basis of these traits. We conducted a genome-wide association study based on the genomic information of 96 sheep genotyped by the GeneSeek GGP Ovine 50K SNP (single-nucleotide polymorphism) chip and on the following traits: polledness (presence or absence of horns), horn shape, and wool colour (completely white and completely black). The univariate linear mixed model was used to discover genetic variants significantly associated with tested traits. The Bonferroni correction and the false-discovery rate were used as significance thresholds. The RXFP2 gene (chromosome 10, 29.5 Mb) was identified as a strong candidate for polledness. In addition, when compared to animals with sideways-turned horns vs. polled, the region around the ADAMTS3 gene (chromosome 6, 88.47 Mb) was significant. A total of nine significant genomic regions were found when comparing the sideways-turned spiral horns with the backwards-curled horns, the two most frequent horn types in Original Valachian sheep. The RXFP2 may also contribute to the genetic control of horn shape. Genes identified in other regions were involved to osteogenic differentiation and osteoblast proliferation (PCP4, chromosome 1, 260.7 Mb), bone mineral density and mineral content (NKX1-2, chromosome 22, 43.75 Mb). The significant genetic variants close to the region of MC1R (chromosome 14, at 14.2 Mb) were associated with the wool colour of sheep that were fully white or fully black animals. The results of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the phenotypic variability of the Original Valachian sheep, especially regarding traits that are very important for breeders of this endangered breed.</p
Monitoring international migration flows in Europe. Towards a statistical data base combining data from different sources
The paper reviews techniques developed in demography, geography and statistics that are useful for bridging the gap between available data on international migration flows and the information required for policy making and research. The basic idea of the paper is as follows: to establish a coherent and consistent data base that contains sufficiently detailed, up-to-date and accurate information, data from several sources should be combined. That raises issues of definition and measurement, and of how to combine data from different origins properly. The issues may be tackled more easily if the statistics that are being compiled are viewed as different outcomes or manifestations of underlying stochastic processes governing migration. The link between the processes and their outcomes is described by models, the parameters of which must be estimated from the available data. That may be done within the context of socio-demographic accounting. The paper discusses the experience of the U.S. Bureau of the Census in combining migration data from several sources. It also summarizes the many efforts in Europe to establish a coherent and consistent data base on international migration.

Back to basics in the marketing of place: the impact of litter upon place attitudes
YesAttempts to apply marketing theory and principles to place have become a legitimate area of academic and 'real world' practice. However, place marketing does not typically incorporate all elements of the traditional 7 Ps, focusing far too often on just one of these - promotion. Besides this rather myopic approach, place marketing suffers from an overly strategic view of the world that ignores the meaning and lived experience of places to individuals, especially residents. The purpose of this article is twofold - first, we investigate the impact of litter on place attitudes. Litter is a common, but negative, element of place, which is intimately connected to the lived experience of a place but typically far removed from the positive promotional activity favoured by place marketing efforts and the study thereof. In this sense, the article reframes place marketing from a strategic to a micro-marketing endeavour. We found that exposing respondents to litter significantly lowers their place attitudes. Our second contribution is to demonstrate the relevance of classic marketing research approaches, such as attitudinal measures, to investigate litter and its impact on place evaluations, through quasi-experimental design (with 662 respondents). Through this, we extend the range of theory and method applied in place marketing - away from controllable promotional endeavours investigated through case-studies to a more holistic and robust interpretation of place marketing, which has a measurable impact upon the places where people live and visit
The Concentration of Affluence in the United States, 1990
The author examines the concentration of affluent households in affluent neighborhoods in U.S. metropolitan areas in 1990. The rate of concentrated affluence, the percentage of affluent households living in affluent neighborhoods, is considered for the total population and separately for blacks and whites. Also, differences in the rate of concentrated affluence between blacks and whites are explored. Models of concentrated affluence that incorporate variables suggested by the literature on economic restructuring in the late twentieth century and by the literature on racial differences in the residential return to individual resources are developed and tested. In general, variables measuring industry/occupation employment mix influence the rate of concentrated affluence mainly through the levels of income they generate. Racial differences in the rate of concentrated affluence are influenced more by income differences between blacks and whites than by residential segregation.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
N-terminal amino acid sequences of chloroform/methanol-soluble proteins and albumins from endosperms of wheat, barley and related species: Homology with inhibitors of α-amylase and trypsin and with 2 S storage globulins
The N-terminal amino acid sequences of two chloroform/methanol soluble globulins from barley and one form wheat are reported. They are homologous with N-terminal sequences previously reported for α-amylase and trypsin inhibitors from cereals and 2 S storage proteins from castor bean and rape. Three albumins were also purified from Aegilops squarrosa and Triticum monococcum. These had N-terminal amino acid sequences most closely related to the α-amylase and trypsin inhibitors. The relationships of this superfamily of seed proteins are discussed
The wheat ω-gliadin genes: structure and EST analysis
A survey and analysis is made of all available ω-gliadin DNA sequences including ω-gliadin genes within a large genomic clone, previously reported gene sequences, and ESTs identified from the large wheat EST collection. A contiguous portion of the Gli-B3 locus is shown to contain two apparently active ω-gliadin genes, two pseudogenes, and four fragments of the 3′ portion of ω-gliadin sequences. Comparison of ω-gliadin sequences allows a phylogenetic picture of their relationships and genomes of origin. Results show three groupings of ω-gliadin active gene sequences assigned to each of the three hexaploid wheat genomes, and a fourth group thus far consisting of pseudogenes assigned to the A-genome. Analysis of ω-gliadin ESTs allows reconstruction of two full-length model sequences encoding the AREL- and ARQL-type proteins from the Gli-A3 and Gli-D3 loci, respectively. There is no DNA evidence of multiple active genes from these two loci. In contrast, ESTs allow identification of at least three to four distinct active genes at the Gli-B3 locus of some cultivars. Additional results include more information on the position of cysteines in some ω-gliadin genes and discussion of problems in studying the ω-gliadin gene family
Obesity, physical activity, and the urban environment: public health research needs
Persistent trends in overweight and obesity have resulted in a rapid research effort focused on built environment, physical activity, and overweight. Much of the focus of this research has been on the design and form of suburbs. It suggests that several features of the suburban built environment such as low densities, poor street connectivity and the lack of sidewalks are associated with decreased physical activity and an increased risk of being overweight. But compared to suburban residents, inner city populations have higher rates of obesity and inactivity despite living in neighborhoods that are dense, have excellent street connectivity and who's streets are almost universally lined with sidewalks. We suggest that the reasons for this apparent paradox are rooted in the complex interaction of land use, infrastructure and social factors affecting inner city populations. Sometimes seemingly similar features are the result of very different processes, necessitating different policy responses to meet these challenges. For example, in suburbs, lower densities can result from government decision making that leads to restrictive zoning and land use issues. In the inner city, densities may be lowered because of abandonment and disinvestment. In the suburbs, changes in land use regulations could result in a healthier built environment. In inner cities, increasing densities will depend on reversing economic trends and investment decisions that have systematically resulted in distressed housing, abandoned buildings and vacant lots. These varying issues need to be further studied in the context of the totality of urban environments, incorporating what has been learned from other disciplines, such as economics and sociology, as well as highlighting some of the more successful inner city policy interventions, which may provide examples for communities working to improve their health. Certain disparities among urban and suburban populations in obesity and overweight, physical activity and research focus have emerged that are timely to address. Comparable research on the relationship of built environment and health is needed for urban, especially inner city, neighborhoods
