A cardinal dissensus measure based on the Mahalanobis distance

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaIn this paper we address the problem of measuring the degree of consensus/dissensus in a context where experts or agents express their opinions on alternatives or issues by means of cardinal evaluations. To this end we propose a new class of distance-based consensus model, the family of the Mahalanobis dissensus measures for profiles of cardinal values. We set forth some meaningful properties of the Mahalanobis dissensus measures. Finally, an application over a real empirical example is presented and discussed.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Project CGL2008-06003-C03-03/CLI)Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Project ECO2012-32178)Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Project ECO2012-31933

A new consensus ranking approach for correlated ordinal information based on Mahalanobis distance

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaWe investigate from a global point of view the existence of cohesiveness among experts’ opinions. We address this general issue from three basic essentials: the management of experts’ opinions when they are expressed by ordinal information; the measurement of the degree of dissensus among such opinions; and the achievement of a group solution that conveys the minimum dissensus to the experts’ group. Accordingly, we propose and characterize a new procedure to codify ordinal information. We also define a new measurement of the degree of dissensus among individual preferences based on the Mahalanobis distance. It is especially designed for the case of possibly correlated alternatives. Finally, we investigate a procedure to obtain a social consensus solution that also includes the possibility of alternatives that are correlated. In addition, we examine the main traits of the dissensus measurement as well as the social solution proposed. The operational character and intuitive interpretation of our approaches are illustrated by an explanatory example.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (ECO2012–32178

Resonant tunneling through a C60 molecular junction in liquid environment

We present electronic transport measurements through thiolated C60_{60} molecules in liquid environment. The molecules were placed within a mechanically controllable break junction using a single anchoring group per molecule. When varying the electrode separation of the C60_{60}-modified junctions, we observed a peak in the conductance traces. The shape of the curves is strongly influenced by the environment of the junction as shown by measurements in two distinct solvents. In the framework of a simple resonant tunneling model, we can extract the electronic tunneling rates governing the transport properties of the junctions.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Surface nanostructuring of TiO2 thin films by high energy ion irradiation

The effects of a high ion dose irradiation on TiO2 thin films under different conditions of temperature and ion nature are discussed. We have shown that anatase TiO2 thin films irradiated with N+ ions at room temperature develop a typical microstructure with mounds and voids open to the surface whereas irradiations at 700 K generate a surface pattern of well-ordered nanorods aligned with the ion beam. The formation of these patterns is caused by the simultaneous effect of ion irradiation near the film surface and a film temperature favoring the structural mobilization of the defective network of the material. To explain these phenomena, a qualitative model has been proposed and further tested by irradiating the TiO2 thin films with F+ and S+ ions under different conditions. The obtained results demonstrate that ion irradiation techniques enable the formation of tilted nanorod surface patterns with lengths of about 100 nm on anatase TiO2 thin films. © 2010 The American Physical Society.Peer Reviewe

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of flavanol-containing tea, cocoa and apple products on body composition and blood lipids: exploring the factors responsible for variability in their efficacy

Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses support the benefits of flavanols on cardiometabolic health, but the factors affecting variability in the responses to these compounds have not been properly assessed. The objectives of this meta-analysis were to systematically collect the RCTs-based-evidence of the effects of flavanol-containing tea, cocoa and apple products on selected biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk and to explore the influence of various factors on the variability in the responses to the consumption of these products. A total of 120 RCTs were selected. Despite a high heterogeneity, the intake of the flavanol-containing products was associated using a random model with changes (reported as standardized difference in means (SDM)) in body mass index (−0.15, p < 0.001), waist circumference (−0.29, p < 0.001), total-cholesterol (−0.21, p < 0.001), LDL-cholesterol (−0.23, p < 0.001), and triacylglycerides (−0.11, p = 0.027), and with an increase of HDL-cholesterol (0.15, p = 0.005). Through subgroup analyses, we showed the influence of baseline-BMI, sex, source/form of administration, medication and country of investigation on some of the outcome measures and suggest that flavanols may be more effective in specific subgroups such as those with a BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2, non-medicated individuals or by specifically using tea products. This meta-analysis provides the first robust evidence of the effects induced by the consumption of flavanol-containing tea, cocoa and apple products on weight and lipid biomarkers and shows the influence of various factors that can affect their bioefficacy in humans. Of note, some of these effects are quantitatively comparable to those produced by drugs, life-style changes or other natural products. Further, RCTs in well-characterized populations are required to fully comprehend the factors affecting inter-individual responses to flavanol and thereby improve flavanols efficacy in the prevention of cardiometabolic disorders

Kinetic and equilibrium adsorption parameters estimation based on a heterogeneous intraparticle diffusion model

In this work, a commercial resin with a well-developed internal pore structure was chosen to adsorb four parabens used as probe molecules. The main novelty was to propose and validate a phenomenological transient adsorption model based on conservation law in both phases coupled with Langmuir’s equilibrium law and Fick’s mass transfer rate law inside the pores. With such an aim, a heterogeneous three-parameter intraparticle diffusion model, IPDM, was formulated, and its numerical solution was fitted to time-dependent concentration data by minimizing the sum of squared residuals. Equilibrium constants were also predicted by fitting Langmuir isotherm to equilibrium data. A monolayer capacity of 0.81 mmol/g was calculated for the four parabens regardless of the number of carbons in the ester group. With the optimal parameters values from the IPDM fitting process, a system of ODEs comprising local sensitivity coefficients as dependent variables was solved to compute the parameters’ variance-covariance matrix and infer their ranges for a 95% marginal confidence interval. In order to test the validity of the proposed model, an attempt to crosscheck between the parameters obtained by the estimation of the equilibrium related parameter, κ, and the modified capacity parameter, and the ones obtained by fitting the Langmuir’s isotherm to equilibrium data was carried out. As far as equilibrium related parameters concern, there is a relative agreement inside the limits of the confidence range between the estimated values of the amount adsorbed in equilibrium with initial bulk solution concentration, q0, and Langmuir’s equilibrium constant, K, adjusted to kinetic and equilibrium data, independently. Additionally, the order of magnitude of pore diffusivity obtained in this work is in accordance with the one predicted by Wilke-Chang correlation and is inversely proportional to the van der Waals volume raised to the power 0.53 in close agreement with the literature. The authors gratefully acknowledge financial support of this research work through the Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología (CICYT)-CTM2013-41354-R and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)-UIDB/04730/2020 projects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
