Signal Processing Methods for Removing the Effects of Whole Body Vibration upon Speech
Humans may be exposed to whole-body vibration in environments where clear speech communications are crucial, particularly during the launch phases of space flight and in high-performance aircraft. Prior research has shown that high levels of vibration cause a decrease in speech intelligibility. However, the effects of whole-body vibration upon speech are not well understood, and no attempt has been made to restore speech distorted by whole-body vibration. In this paper, a model for speech under whole-body vibration is proposed and a method to remove its effect is described. The method described reduces the perceptual effects of vibration, yields higher ASR accuracy scores, and may significantly improve intelligibility. Possible applications include incorporation within communication systems to improve radio-communication systems in environments such a spaceflight, aviation, or off-road vehicle operations
Imaging the Molecular Disk Orbiting the Twin Young Suns of V4046 Sgr
We have imaged the disk surrounding the nearby (D~73 pc), ~12 Myr, classical
T Tauri binary system V4046 Sgr with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at an
angular resolution of ~2". We detect a rotating disk in 12CO(2-1) and 13CO(2-1)
emission, and resolve the continuum emission at 1.3 mm. We infer disk gas and
dust masses of ~110 and ~40 Earth masses, respectively. Fits to a power-law
disk model indicate that the molecular disk extends to ~370 AU and is viewed at
an inclination of between ~33 and ~39 degrees for dynamical stellar masses
ranging from 1.8 down to 1.5 (the range of total mass
previously determined for the central, 2.4 day spectroscopic binary). This
range of disk inclination is consistent with that assumed in deducing the
central binary mass (i.e., 35 degrees), suggesting that the V4046 Sgr binary
system and its circumbinary, molecular disk are coplanar. In light of the
system's age and binarity, the presence of an extensive molecular disk orbiting
V4046 Sgr provides constraints on the timescales of processes related to Jovian
planet formation, and demonstrates that circumbinary Jovian planets potentially

Optical and Infrared Light Curves of the Eclipsing X-ray Binary V395 Car = 2S 0921-630
We present results of optical and infrared photometric monitoring of the
eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary V395 Car (2S 0921-630). Our observations reveal
a clear, repeating orbital modulation with an amplitude of about one magnitude
in B, and V and a little less in J. Combining our data with archival
observations spanning about 20 years, we derive an updated ephemeris with
orbital period 9.0026+/-0.0001d. We attribute the modulation to a combination
of the changing aspect of the irradiated face of the companion star and
eclipses of the accretion disk around the neutron star. Both appear to be
necessary as a secondary eclipse of the companion star is clearly seen. We
model the B, V, and J lightcurves using a simple model of an accretion disk and
companion star and find a good fit is possible for binary inclinations of
82.2+/-1.0 degrees. We estimate the irradiating luminosity to be about 8x10^35
erg/s, in good agreement with X-ray constraints.Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication in MNRA
Moving from a Product-Based Economy to a Service-Based Economy for a More Sustainable Future
Traditionally, economic growth and prosperity have been linked with the availability, production and distribution of tangible goods as well as the ability of consumers to acquire such goods. Early evidence regarding this connection dates back to Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations (1776), in which any activity not resulting in the production of a tangible good is characterized as unproductive of any value." Since then, this coupling of economic value and material production has been prevalent in both developed and developing economies throughout the world. One unintended consequence of this coupling has been the exponential increase in the amount of solid waste being generated. The reason is that any production and consumption of material goods eventually generates the equivalent amount of (or even more) waste. Exacerbating this problem is the fact that, with today's manufacturing and supply chain management technologies, it has become cheaper to dispose and replace most products rather than to repair and reuse them. This has given rise to what some call a disposable society." To put things in perspective: In 2012 households in the U.K. generated approximately 22 thousand tons of waste, which amounted to 411 kg of waste generated per person (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, 2015). During the same time period, households in the U.S. generated 251 million tons of waste, which is equivalent to a person generating approximately 2 kg of waste every day (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2012). Out of these 251 million tons of total waste generated, approximately 20% of the discarded items were categorized as durable goods. The disposal of durable goods is particularly worrisome because they are typically produced using material from non- renewable resources such as iron, minerals, and petroleum-based raw materials
Properties of the Galactic population of cataclysmic variables in hard X-rays
We measure the spatial distribution and hard X-ray luminosity function of
cataclysmic variables (CVs) using the INTEGRAL all-sky survey in the 17-60 keV
energy band. The vast majority of the INTEGRAL detected CVs are intermediate
polars with luminosities in the range 10^{32}-10^{34} erg/sec. The scale height
of the Galactic disk population of CVs is found to be 130{+90}{-50} pc. The CV
luminosity function measured with INTEGRAL in hard X-rays is compatible with
that previously determined at lower energies (3--20 keV) using a largely
independent sample of sources detected by RXTE (located at |b|>10deg as opposed
to the INTEGRAL sample, strongly concentrated to the Galactic plane). The
cumulative 17-60 keV luminosity density of CVs per unit stellar mass is found
to be (1.3+/-0.3)x10^{27} erg/sec/Msun and is thus comparable to that of
low-mass X-ray binaries in this energy band. Therefore, faint but numerous CVs
are expected to provide an important contribution to the cumulative hard X-ray

The Intentional Use of Service Recovery Strategies to Influence Consumer Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour
Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect
Climate Change and invasibility of the Antarctic benthos
Benthic communities living in shallow-shelf habitats in Antarctica (<100-m depth) are archaic in their structure and function. Modern predators, including fast-moving, durophagous (skeleton-crushing) bony fish, sharks, and crabs, are rare or absent; slow-moving invertebrates are the top predators; and epifaunal suspension feeders dominate many soft substratum communities. Cooling temperatures beginning in the late Eocene excluded durophagous predators, ultimately resulting in the endemic living fauna and its unique food-web structure. Although the Southern Ocean is oceanographically isolated, the barriers to biological invasion are primarily physiological rather than geographic. Cold temperatures impose limits to performance that exclude modern predators. Global warming is now removing those physiological barriers, and crabs are reinvading Antarctica. As sea temperatures continue to rise, the invasion of durophagous predators will modernize the shelf benthos and erode the indigenous character of marine life in Antarctica
On the Change of the Inner Boundary of an Optically Thick Accretion Disk around White Dwarfs Using the Dwarf Nova SS Cyg as an Example
We present the results of our studies of the aperiodic optical flux
variability for SS Cyg, an accreting binary systemwith a white dwarf. The main
set of observational data presented here was obtained with the ANDOR/iXon
DU-888 photometer mounted on the RTT-150 telescope, which allowed a record(for
CCD photometers) time resolution up to 8 ms to be achieved. The power spectra
of the source's flux variability have revealed that the aperiodic variability
contains information about the inner boundary of the optically thick flow in
the binary system. We show that the inner boundary of the optically thick
accretion disk comes close to the white dwarf surface at the maximum of the
source's bolometric light curve, i.e., at the peak of the instantaneous
accretion rate onto the white dwarf, while the optically thick accretion disk
is truncated at distances 8.5e9 cm ~10 R_{WD} in the low state. We suggest that
the location of the inner boundary of the accretion disk in the binary can be
traced by studying the parameters of the power spectra for accreting white
dwarfs. In particular, this allows the mass of the accreting object to be

O Efeito da Sinalização de Qualidade no Contexto de Serviços
Signaling theory states that signals are firms’ actions that communicate information about the quality of a product. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of signal quality in a service context, through the investigation of the signaling effects of price and responsiveness in a service context. Perceived behavior control, regarded as an individual's perception of the ability to perform a behavior, was proposed as a moderator between signaling variables and perceived quality. Two experimental studies with factorial and inter-subject designs were conducted in order to test the hypotheses formulated from the literature review. Results from both experiments show that signaling quality through price and responsiveness can affect perceived quality. The second experiment supports the hypothesis of perceived behavior control moderation between price as a signaling variable and perceived quality, but not between responsiveness and perceived quality. These results and their implications are discussed in the final section of the paper
