Strategy for the Digitalization of the Local Television Program Archives in Saxony
The German Free State of Saxony has a high density of independent local and regional television broadcasters. From the antenna communities at the time of the GDR, private TV broadcasters developed after the reunification. In the period of the social transformations in the 1990s, these local TV stations documented the profound changes of the everyday life of the individual, of the local communities and the historical transformations in society and economy during the early years after the German reunion. These recordings are a substantial part of the cultural heritage of Saxony and of the highest interest for social, cultural and media research. Due to how the original material was produced on consumer videotapes, today the recordings are threatened by decay. In the next few years the recordings will be lost, if not acted quickly. Some state and private institutions are currently developing concepts for the preservation of the audiovisual heritage in Saxony In this paper, we discuss how these media objects should be scientifically investigated, in the sense of media and sociocultural dimensions, questions and categories. Based on our experiences and investigations, we present a technical concept which shows how to digitalize, index, describe and categorize copious amounts of videotapes for the preservation, archiving and public access of this important part of the cultural heritage of Germany
Hochschulfernsehen in Deutschland: Zwischen Distributionsautonomie und Einzelkampf: Broschüre zur Tagung vom 28.-29. Juni 2013

Underway spectrophotometry in the Fram Strait (European Arctic Ocean): a highly resolved chlorophyll a data source for complementing satellite ocean color
Satellite remote sensing of chlorophyll a concentration (Chl-a) in the Arctic Ocean
is spatially and temporally limited and needs to be supplemented and validated with
substantial volumes of in situ observations. Here, we evaluated the capability of obtaining
highly resolved in situ surface Chl-a using underway spectrophotometry operated during two
summer cruises in 2015 and 2016 in the Fram Strait. Results showed that Chl-a measured
using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) was well related (R2 = 0.90) to the
collocated particulate absorption line height at 676 nm obtained from the underway
spectrophotometry system. This enabled continuous surface Chl-a estimation along the cruise
tracks. When used to validate Chl-a operational products as well as to assess the Chl-a
algorithms of the aqua moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS-A) and
Sentinel-3 Ocean Land Color Imager (OLCI) Level 2 Chl-a operational products, and from
OLCI Level 2 products processed with Polymer atmospheric correction algorithm (version
4.1), the underway spectrophotometry based Chl-a data sets proved to be a much more
sufficient data source by generating over one order of magnitude more match-ups than those
obtained from discrete water samples. Overall, the band ratio (OCI, OC4) Chl-a operational
products from MODIS-A and OLCI as well as OLCI C2RCC products showed acceptable
results. The OLCI Polymer standard output provided the most reliable Chl-a estimates, and
nearly as good results were obtained from the OCI algorithm with Polymer atmospheric
correction method. This work confirms the great advantage of the underway
spectrophotometry in enlarging in situ Chl-a data sets for the Fram Strait and improving
satellite Chl-a validation and Chl-a algorithm assessment over discrete water sample analysis

Spectral modelling of the "Super-Chandra" Type Ia SN 2009dc - testing a 2 M_sun white dwarf explosion model and alternatives
Extremely luminous, super-Chandrasekhar (SC) Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) are
as yet an unexplained phenomenon. We analyse a well-observed SN of this class,
SN 2009dc, by modelling its photospheric spectra with a spectral synthesis
code, using the technique of 'Abundance Tomography'. We present spectral models
based on different density profiles, corresponding to different explosion
scenarios, and discuss their consistency. First, we use a density structure of
a simulated explosion of a 2 M_sun rotating C-O white dwarf (WD), which is
often proposed as a possibility to explain SC SNe Ia. Then, we test a density
profile empirically inferred from the evolution of line velocities
(blueshifts). This model may be interpreted as a core-collapse SN with an
ejecta mass ~ 3 M_sun. Finally, we calculate spectra assuming an interaction
scenario. In such a scenario, SN 2009dc would be a standard WD explosion with a
normal intrinsic luminosity, and this luminosity would be augmented by
interaction of the ejecta with a H-/He-poor circumstellar medium. We find that
no model tested easily explains SN 2009dc. With the 2 M_sun WD model, our
abundance analysis predicts small amounts of burning products in the
intermediate-/high-velocity ejecta (v > 9000 km/s). However, in the original
explosion simulations, where the nuclear energy release per unit mass is large,
burned material is present at high v. This contradiction can only be resolved
if asymmetries strongly affect the radiative transfer or if C-O WDs with masses
significantly above 2 M_sun exist. In a core-collapse scenario, low velocities
of Fe-group elements are expected, but the abundance stratification in SN
2009dc seems 'SN Ia-like'. The interaction-based model looks promising, and we
have some speculations on possible progenitor configurations. However,
radiation-hydro simulations will be needed to judge whether this scenario is
realistic at all.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, published in MNRAS. V2: several small
