Gastronomy and Tourism: Socioeconomic and Territorial Implications in Santiago de Compostela-Galiza (NW Spain)

It is a worldwide well-known fact that gastronomic tourism does not always contribute to the cultural, social, economic, and territorial development of the host community. Therefore, its study requires a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to explore and interpret this phenomenon. From this perspective, the paper analyses the consumption of food products by tourists in Santiago de Compostela in Spain (2013–2014). Personal interviews (2081) with visitors and food industry establishment representatives were done. Compared with the normal food consumption of the Galician population, the food production capacity established by the corresponding Santiago foodshed calculation, and with the gastronomy official advertising (tourism web pages analysed by multimodal analysis), the gastronomic tourist experience is standardized and poor, limited to practically two products: rice with lobster, and octopus. This standardization supposes a high reduction in the diversity of the product that can be offered and produced in terms of proximity, and its territorial differentiation, comparing to the usual consumption of the Galician population, to the potential agricultural production by associated foodshed, and to the gastronomic advertising through official web pages. Thus, in this case, gastronomic tourism is not contributing to the social, economic, and territorial development of the host community or, ultimately, to the sustainability of tourismThis research was funded by FEDER/Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities- Spanish National Agency of Research; Project: FFI2017-88196-RS

Através do recurso à estatística descritiva, analisou-se as médias obtidas por cada dimensão e, numa segunda fase, através de testes de t de amostras independentes, averiguou-se a possibilidade de diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os dois grupos de turistasRecognizing the importance of Destination Brands in differentiating and in the creation of unique propositions in a highly competitive tourism destination marketplace, the purpose of this study was to analyse the perceptual image of two competing tourism destinations (Porto and Santiago de Compostela) which city centres are part of the World Heritage list by UNESCO. Therefore, the study aims to evaluate the different perceptions that the tourists hold towards these destinations and to discuss managerial implications suggested by the results obtained. The survey used in both cities included 19 dimensions with the purpose of measuring the perceptual image of these destinations.

Promoting the Sustainability of Organizations: Contribution of Transformational Leadership to Job Engagement

    Get PDF
The psychology of sustainability highlights the importance of building organizational environments promoting the employees’ well-being, and leaders play an important role in it. Drawing from Kahn’s theory, the purpose of this study is to simultaneously examine the mediating role of task significance, perceived organizational support (POS) and employees’ core self-evaluations (CSE) in the relationship between supervisors’ transformational leadership and job engagement. In order to test the proposed model, a structural equation modelling was performed using the bootstrapping technique in IBM SPSS Amos 23 for Windows. The sample consisted of 320 employees from emergent high-tech and knowledge-based SMEs in Spain. The results supported all the hypotheses posited. By helping employees to find the meaning and significance of their work, making them feel supported by the organization and strengthening their sense of worth and competence, transformational leaders boost job engagement, a key aspect of the human dimension of organizational sustainability. This paper contributes to the psychology of sustainability by advancing knowledge of the mechanisms through which supervisors’ transformational leadership influences employees’ well-being in terms of job engagementS

O considera-la propensión exportadora verificase o impacto prevalecente do sector, con electos diferenciados do tamaño segundo o sector industrial examinado. A participación do capital estranxeiro en ningún caso presenta efectos significativosSome characteristics of the firm such as size, rata of foreign capital or industry could affect export. Linear and logistic regression, variance and log-linear analysis, and CHAlD algorithm have been used to test those relationships. Results have shown that export probability is related to the size of the company. lndustry has only some effects on small and medium-sized enterprises. Export intensity of the firm depends on industry and the relationship between size and export intensity is different in different industries. The influence of foreign trade capital rate cannot be testedS

[EN] The research on Undergraduate Disserta-tion (UD) has been incorporating aspects of the tutor/ student interaction that have been shown to be crucial in explaining the student’s results. The tutorial support re-ceived during the realization of the UD - in nature and intensity - and its relationship with the final results deserves particular attention. The study of this relationship is the objective of this paper that, through the analysis of the information provided by 178 students / supervisors pairs, in-vestigates the relationships between the utorial support (declared by the teaching staff) and the competences reached by the students (perceived by the students them-selves), and between these and the real grade reached in the UD. The results indi-cate that the tutorial support in each one of the phases of the work is significantly related to several competences that the students perceive to have reached. Specif-ically, the critical capacity is improved with the intensity of the tutorial support in var-ious phases of the work. The organization of time is perceived to be increased with the support in the first phases -design of research and objectives design- while the use of prior knowledge and oral and writ-ten communication skills are competencies that improve with the intensity of support in their final phases -elaboration of conclu-sions and drafting. (2018). A search for ultra-high-energy photons at the Pierre Auger Observatory exploiting air-shower universality

    Get PDF
The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive detector to primary photons with energies above ∼0.2 EeV. It measures extensive air showers using a hybrid technique that combines a fluorescence detector (FD) with a ground array of particle detectors (SD). The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth at the shower maximum (Xmax_{max}) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced background. Using observables measured by the FD and SD, three photon searches in different energy bands are performed. In particular, between threshold energies of 1-10 EeV, a new analysis technique has been developed by combining the FD-based measurement of Xmax_{max} with the SD signal through a parameter related to its muon content, derived from the universality of the air showers. This technique has led to a better photon/hadron separation and, consequently, to a higher search sensitivity, resulting in a tighter upper limit than before. The outcome of this new analysis is presented here, along with previous results in the energy ranges below 1 EeV and above 10 EeV. From the data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory in about 15 years of operation, the most stringent constraints on the fraction of photons in the cosmic flux are set over almost three decades in energy

Study on multi-ELVES in the Pierre Auger Observatory

    Get PDF
Since 2013, the four sites of the Fluorescence Detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory record ELVES with a dedicated trigger. These UV light emissions are correlated to distant lightning strikes. The length of recorded traces has been increased from 100 μs (2013), to 300 μs (2014-16), to 900 μs (2017-present), to progressively extend the observation of the light emission towards the vertical of the causative lightning and beyond. A large fraction of the observed events shows double ELVES within the time window, and, in some cases, even more complex structures are observed. The nature of the multi-ELVES is not completely understood but may be related to the different types of lightning in which they are originated. For example, it is known that Narrow Bipolar Events can produce double ELVES, and Energetic In-cloud Pulses, occurring between the main negative and upper positive charge layer of clouds, can induce double and even quadruple ELVES in the ionosphere. This report shows the seasonal and daily dependence of the time gap, amplitude ratio, and correlation between the pulse widths of the peaks in a sample of 1000+ multi-ELVES events recorded during the period 2014-20. The events have been compared with data from other satellite and ground-based sensing devices to study the correlation of their properties with lightning observables such as altitude and polarity
