Quasars and the Big Blue Bump
We investigate the ultraviolet-to-optical spectral energy distributions
(SEDs) of 17 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using quasi-simultaneous
spectrophotometry spanning 900-9000 Angstrom (rest frame). We employ data from
the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), the Hubble Space Telescope
(HST), and the 2.1-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO).
Taking advantage of the short-wavelength coverage, we are able to study the
so-called "big blue bump," the region where the energy output peaks, in detail.
Most objects exhibit a spectral break around 1100 Angstrom. Although this
result is formally associated with large uncertainty for some objects, there is
strong evidence in the data that the far-ultraviolet spectral region is below
the extrapolation of the near-ultraviolet-optical slope, indicating a spectral
break around 1100 Angstrom. We compare the behavior of our sample to those of
non-LTE thin-disk models covering a range in black-hole mass, Eddington ratio,
disk inclination, and other parameters. The distribution of ultraviolet-optical
spectral indices redward of the break, and far-ultraviolet indices shortward of
the break, are in rough agreement with the models. However, we do not see a
correlation between the far-ultraviolet spectral index and the black hole mass,
as seen in some accretion disk models. We argue that the observed spectral
break is intrinsic to AGNs, although intrinsic reddening as well as
Comptonization can strongly affect the far-ultraviolet spectral index. We make

The N=1 superstring as a topological field theory
By "untwisting" the construction of Berkovits and Vafa, one can see that the
N=1 superstring contains a topological twisted N=2 algebra, with central charge
c^ = 2. We discuss to what extent the superstring is actually a topological

Host macrophage response to injectable hydrogels derived from ECM and α-helical peptides
Tissue engineering materials play a key role in how closely the complex architectural and functional characteristics of native healthy tissue can be replicated. Traditional natural and synthetic materials are superseded by bespoke materials that cross the boundary between these two categories. Here we present hydrogels that are derived from decellularised extracellular matrix and those that are synthesised from de novo α-helical peptides. We assess in vitro activation of murine macrophages to our hydrogels and whether these gels induce an M1-like or M2-like phenotype. This was followed by the in vivo immune macrophage response to hydrogels injected into rat partial-thickness abdominal wall defects. Over 28 days we observe an increase in mononuclear cell infiltration at the hydrogel-tissue interface without promoting a foreign body reaction and see no evidence of hydrogel encapsulation or formation of multinucleate giant cells. We also note an upregulation of myogenic differentiation markers and the expression of anti-inflammatory markers Arginase1, IL-10, and CD206, indicating pro-remodelling for all injected hydrogels. Furthermore, all hydrogels promote an anti-inflammatory environment after an initial spike in the pro-inflammatory phenotype. No difference between the injected site and the healthy tissue is seen after 28 days, indicating full integration. These materials offer great potential for future applications in regenerative medicine and towards unmet clinical needs
Sphyrna tudes, Smalleye Hammerhead
The Smalleye Hammerhead (Sphyrna tudes) is a medium-sized (to 150 cm total length) shark that occurs in the Western Central and Southwest Atlantic from Colombia to the Rio de La Plata, Argentina. It inhabits inshore waters over the continental shelf at depths of 5–80 m. It is captured in intense and largely unmanaged commercial and artisanal beach seines, gillnets, longlines, and trawls throughout its geographic range. This shark is targeted or retained as bycatch for its meat, which is consumed or sold locally. There are few data on population reduction but these intensive unmanaged fisheries are suspected to have caused reductions and possibly local extinctions throughout this species' range. For example, in Brazil, this hammerhead has not been recorded in 35 years from Ceará state and it is considered by local fishers to be depleted in Bahia state. This shark is supposed to be strictly protected in Brazil, but it is clear that it is still landed and traded in various states. Overall, due to intense and largely unmanaged fisheries across its range, lack of refuge at depth, suspected declines in many areas and local extinctions suspected from an absence of records (despite continued sampling and observation), and its relatively unproductive life history, it is suspected that the Smalleye Hammerhead has undergone a population reduction of >80% over the past three generations (37 years), and it is assessed as Critically Endangered A2bd.Fil: Pollom, R.. Modulation of the silica sol-gel composition for the promotion of direct electron transfer to encapsulated cytochrome
The direct electron transfer between indium-tin oxide electrodes (ITO) and cytochrome c encapsulated in different sol-gel silica networks was studied. Cyt c@silica modified electrodes were synthesized by a two-step encapsulation method mixing a phosphate buffer solution with dissolved cytochrome c and a silica sol prepared by the alcohol-free sol-gel route. These modified electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and in situ UV-vis spectroelectrochemistry. The electrochemical response of encapsulated protein is influenced by the terminal groups of the silica pores. Cyt c does not present electrochemical response in conventional silica (hydroxyl terminated) or phenyl terminated silica. Direct electron transfer to encapsulated cytochrome c and ITO electrodes only takes place when the protein is encapsulated in methyl modified silica networks.We gratefully acknowledge Jesus Yanez and Prof. Jose Miguel Martin-Martinez from the Laboratory of Adhesion and Adhesives (University of Alicante) for their assistance in the measurements of contact angle. X-Ray/Ultraviolet Observing Campaign of the Markarian 279 Active Galactic Nucleus Outflow: a close look at the absorbing/emitting gas with Chandra-LETGS
We present a Chandra-LETGS observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279. This
observation was carried out simultaneously with HST-STIS and FUSE, in the
context of a multiwavelength study of this source. The Chandra pointings were
spread over ten days for a total exposure time of ~360 ks. The spectrum of
Mrk279 shows evidence of broad emission features, especially at the wavelength
of the OVII triplet. We quantitatively explore the possibility that this
emission is produced in the broad line region (BLR). We modeled the broad UV
emission lines seen in the FUSE and HST-STIS spectra following the ``locally
optimally emitting cloud" approach. We find that the X-ray lines luminosity
derived from the best fit BLR model can match the X-ray features, suggesting
that the gas producing the UV lines is sufficient to account also for the X-ray
emission. The spectrum is absorbed by ionized gas whose total column density is
~5x10^{20} cm^{-2}. The absorption spectrum can be modeled by two distinct gas
components (log xi ~ 0.47 and 2.49, respectively) both showing a significant
outflow velocity. However, the data allow also the presence of intermediate
ionization components. The distribution of the column densities of such extra
components as a function of the ionization parameter is not consistent with a
continuous, power law-like, absorber, suggesting a complex structure for the

Can stigma become a resource? The mobilisation of aesthetic–corporal capital by female immigrant entrepreneurs from Brazil
The proportion and visibility of Brazilian women and particularly the specific
images of Brazil and Brazilians in the Portuguese imaginary have contributed
to the construction of new versions of stigma and stereotypes surrounding
them. Mainstream images of Brazilian women have incorporated prejudices
about the sensuality of Creole women who are reminiscent of the Portuguese
colonial imaginary. Starting from this stigmatised image, we show how
Brazilian women entrepreneurs in the ‘beauty’ business filière reinterpret
and mobilise this perceived negative image, transforming it into an added
value associated with an ‘aesthetic’ Brazilian body culture. This idea of
‘body’ aesthetics becomes a business resource transformed into aesthetic–
corporal capital, a key component of the Brazilian beauty business filière.
Empirically, this research is based on qualitative elements, in particular 25
interviews with Brazilian women entrepreneurs of the beauty filière working
in Portugal, collected for the project BELTS-W (Brazilian Entrepreneurial

Coastal sea level monitoring in the Mediterranean and Black seas
Employed for over a century, the traditional way of monitoring sea level variability by tide gauges – in combination with modern observational techniques like satellite altimetry – is an inevitable ingredient in sea level studies over the climate scales and in coastal seas. The development of the instrumentation, remote data acquisition, processing, and archiving in the last decades has allowed the extension of the applications to a variety of users and coastal hazard managers. The Mediterranean and Black seas are examples of such a transition – while having a long tradition of sea level observations with several records spanning over a century, the number of modern tide gauge stations is growing rapidly, with data available both in real time and as a research product at different time resolutions. As no comprehensive survey of the tide gauge networks has been carried out recently in these basins, the aim of this paper is to map the existing coastal sea level monitoring infrastructures and the respective data availability. The survey encompasses a description of major monitoring networks in the Mediterranean and Black seas and their characteristics, including the type of sea level sensors, measuring resolutions, data availability, and existence of ancillary measurements, altogether collecting information about 240 presently operational tide gauge stations. The availability of the Mediterranean and Black seas sea level data in the global and European sea level repositories has been also screened and classified following their sampling interval and level of quality check, pointing to the necessity of harmonization of the data available with different metadata and series in different repositories. Finally, an assessment of the networks' capabilities for their use in different sea level applications has been done, with recommendations that might mitigate the bottlenecks and ensure further development of the networks in a coordinated way, a critical need in the era of human-induced climate changes and sea level rise.En prens
