This paper describes solar heterogeneous photocatalysis using immobilized TiO2 applied in the treatment of agricultural waste resulting from the application of commercial formulations of methyl parathion. The disappearance of the insecticide, as well as the formation of its metabolite, was monitored by high-performance liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), while mineralization efficiency was monitored by measurements of total organic carbon (TOC). Toxicity studies were performed using the microcrustacean Artemia salina. The TOC removal efficiency by photocatalytic process was 48.5%. After 45 minutes of treatment, the removal efficiency of methyl parathion was 90%, being completely mineralized at the end of treatment. The formation and removal of the metabolite methyl paraoxon was observed during the photocatalytic process. The photocatalytic treatment resulted in increased microcrustacean mobility, indicating a reduction of acute toxicity. © 2016, Institute for Environmental Research in Hydrographic Basins (IPABHi). Intensive aquaculture practices involve rearing fish at high densities. In these conditions, fish may be exposed to suboptimal dissolved O2 levels with an increased formation of reactive O2 species (ROS) in tissues. Seaweeds (SW) contain biologically active substances with efficient antioxidant capacities. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation of heat-treated SW (5% Gracilaria vermiculophylla or 5% Ulva lactuca) on stress bioindicators in sea bream subjected to a hypoxic challenge. 168 fish (104.5 g average weight) were distributed in 24 tanks, in which eight tanks were fed one of three experimental diets for 34 days: (i) a control diet without SW supplementation, (ii) a control diet supplemented with Ulva, or (iii) a control diet with Gracilaria. Thereafter, fish from 12 tanks (n=4 tanks/dietary treatment) were subjected to 24 h hypoxia (1.3 mg O2 l-1) and subsequent recovery normoxia (8.6 mg O2 l-1). Hypoxic fish showed an increase in hematocrit values regardless of dietary treatment. Dietary modulation of the O2-carrying capacity was conspicuous during recovery, as fish fed SW supplemented diets displayed significantly higher haemoglobin concentration than fish fed the control diet. After the challenge, survival rates in both groups of fish fed SW were higher, which was consistent with a decrease in hepatic lipid peroxidation in these groups. Furthermore, the hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities were modulated differently by changes in environmental O2 condition, particularly in sea bream fed the Gracilaria diet. After being subjected to hypoxia, the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and molecular chaperones in liver and heart were down regulated in sea bream fed SW diets. This study suggests that the antioxidant properties of heat-treated SW may have a protective role against oxidative stress. The nature of these compounds and possible mechanisms implied are currently being investigated.Fil: Magnoni, Leonardo Julián. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Synthesis of the first thieno-δ-carboline. Fluorescence studies in solution and in lipid vesicles

    Get PDF
The first thieno-δ-carboline (6,8,9-trimethyl-5H-pyrido[3,2-b]thieno[3,2-f]indole) was prepared in good yield (70%) by intramolecular palladium-assisted cyclization of an ortho-chlorodiarylamine. The latter was in turn selectively synthesized in high yield (90%) by C–N palladiumcatalyzed cross-coupling of 3-bromo-2-chloropyridine with, the also prepared, 6-amino-2,3,7-trimethylbenzo[b]thiophene. Fluorescence studies in solution show that thieno-δ-carboline has a solvatochromic behaviour. Despite the low fluorescence quantum yields in solution, studies of its incorporation in lipid vesicles of DPPC, DOPE and DODAB indicate that thienocarboline is located mainly inside the lipid bilayer, exhibiting different behaviours in gel or liquid-crystalline phases. Our studies are useful for the incorporation of thienocarboline in liposomes and for controlled drug release assays, due to its biological activity

AS COURAÇAS E SEU PAPEL NO ESTUDO DA EVOLUÇÃO DO RELEVO, EM MARACAÍ/SP

    Get PDF

The aim of this work was to evaluate the adsorption and desorption coefficients of ametryn and trifloxysulfuron-sodium in six Brazilian soils to predict the potential of behavior and movement of these herbicides on soils. The "Batch slurry" method was used under controlled laboratory conditions. Thus, 10.0 mL of solutions in CaCl2 0.01 mol L-1, containing 0, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 µg mL-1 of ametryn and 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 µg mL-1 of trifloxysulfuron-sodium, were added to flasks containing 2.0 g soil, under orbital agitation until reaching balance time. After centrifugation and filtration, supernatant concentration was quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), with 245 nm UV detector. Desorption was evaluated considering the highest dosage of each compound. The Rhodic Hapludox soil (Sete Lagoas) presented the highest coefficient of adsorption (Kf) for both herbicides, due to its high amount of organic matter (OM). Positive correlation of ametryn Kf was verified with OM (0.81), clay percentage (ARG) (0.80) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) (0.75) of the soils, while OM was the main contributor to its adsorption. However, Kf of trifloxysulfuron-sodium presented only a small correlation with ARG (0.48) and OM (0.28), as its adsorption was possibly dependent on oxides of Fe and Al. Low hysteresis index H was verified for ametryn in relation to trifloxysulfuron-sodium, representing higher desorption potential and, consequently, leaching risk for that herbicide on the profile of the soils analyzed

Environmental isolation of black yeast-like fungi involved in human infection

The present study focuses on potential agents of chromoblastomycosis and other endemic diseases in the state of Paraná, Southern Brazil. Using a highly selective protocol for chaetothyrialean black yeasts and relatives, environmental samples from the living area of symptomatic patients were analysed. Additional strains were isolated from creosote-treated wood and hydrocarbon-polluted environments, as such polluted sites have been supposed to enhance black yeast prevalence. Isolates showed morphologies compatible with the traditional etiological agents of chromoblastomycosis, e.g. Fonsecaea pedrosoi and Phialophora verrucosa, and of agents of subcutaneous or systemic infections like Cladophialophora bantiana and Exophiala jeanselmei. Some agents of mild disease were indeed encountered. However, molecular analysis proved that most environmental strains differed from known etiologic agents of pronounced disease syndromes: they belonged to the same order, but mostly were undescribed species. Agents of chromoblastomycosis and systemic disease thus far are prevalent on the human host. The hydrocarbon-polluted environments yielded yet another spectrum of chaetothyrialean fungi. These observations are of great relevance because they allow us to distinguish between categories of opportunists, indicating possible differences in pathogenicity and virulence
