Design and implementation of a compliant robot with force feedback and strategy planning software
Force-feedback robotics techniques are being developed for automated precision assembly and servicing of NASA space flight equipment. Design and implementation of a prototype robot which provides compliance and monitors forces is in progress. Computer software to specify assembly steps and makes force feedback adjustments during assembly are coded and tested for three generically different precision mating problems. A model program demonstrates that a suitably autonomous robot can plan its own strategy
The use of tumour markers CEA, CA-195 and CA-242 in evaluating the response to chemotherapy in patients with advanced colorectal cancer.
Tumour markers CEA, CA-195 and CA-242 were measured in 33 patients undergoing chemotherapy for advanced colorectal cancer. The aim was to determine whether they could be used to accurately monitor the course of the disease, and reduce the need for imaging. Treatment with a 5-fluorouracil based regimen resulted in a partial response in nine patients (27%), whereas the remainder either had disease stabilisation or suffered from progression. Before treatment the CEA was elevated in 85% of patients and the CA-195 and CA-242 in 78%. All three markers were elevated in 70% and at least one elevated in 93%. CA-195 and CA-242 appeared to be co-expressed, by contrast with the CEA. When compared to the results of serial CT scanning the CEA correlated best with the course of the disease, the positive predictive value being 54% for a partial response, 77% for minor and partial responses combined and 100% for progressive disease. The corresponding values for CA-195 were 46%, 62% and 100% respectively and for CA-242, 50%, 67% and 100% respectively. Thus, although falling levels of markers overestimate the number of responses demonstrated by imaging, rising tumour markers invariably herald progressive disease. This was often evident up to 16 weeks before progression was observed on scanning. CEA is the most useful of the three markers in the monitoring of patients being treated for advanced colorectal cancer, but other markers may prove valuable if the CEA is normal. The use of tumour markers should reduce the need for regular scanning
Computer aided synthesis: a game theoretic approach
In this invited contribution, we propose a comprehensive introduction to game
theory applied in computer aided synthesis. In this context, we give some
classical results on two-player zero-sum games and then on multi-player non
zero-sum games. The simple case of one-player games is strongly related to
automata theory on infinite words. All along the article, we focus on general
approaches to solve the studied problems, and we provide several illustrative

Asteroseismology of the Beta Cephei star Nu Eridani: photometric observations and pulsational frequency analysis
We undertook a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei star Nu
Eridani. More than 600 hours of differential photoelectric uvyV photometry were
obtained with 11 telescopes during 148 clear nights. The frequency analysis of
our measurements shows that the variability of Nu Eri can be decomposed into 23
sinusoidal components, eight of which correspond to independent pulsation
frequencies between 5 - 8 c/d. Some of these are arranged in multiplets, which
suggests rotational m-mode splitting of nonradial pulsation modes as the cause.
If so, the rotation period of the star must be between 30 - 60 d. One of the
signals in the light curves of Nu Eri has a very low frequency of 0.432 c/d. It
can be a high-order combination frequency or, more likely, an independent
pulsation mode. In the latter case Nu Eri would be both a Beta Cephei star and
a slowly pulsating B (SPB) star. The photometric amplitudes of the individual
pulsation modes of Nu Eri appear to have increased by about 20 per cent over
the last 40 years. So do the amplitudes of the dominant combination frequencies
of the star. Among the latter, we only could identify sum frequencies with
certainty, not difference frequencies, which suggests that neither light-curve
distortion in its simplest form nor resonant mode coupling are their single
cause. One of our comparison stars, Mu Eridani, turned out to be variable with
a dominant time scale of 1.62 d. We believe that it is either an SPB star just
leaving its instability strip or that its variations are of rotational origin.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Emergent global patterns of ecosystem structure and function from a mechanistic general ecosystem model
Anthropogenic activities are causing widespread degradation of ecosystems worldwide, threatening the ecosystem services upon which all human life depends. Improved understanding of this degradation is urgently needed to improve avoidance and mitigation measures. One tool to assist these efforts is predictive models of ecosystem structure and function that are mechanistic: based on fundamental ecological principles. Here we present the first mechanistic General Ecosystem Model (GEM) of ecosystem structure and function that is both global and applies in all terrestrial and marine environments. Functional forms and parameter values were derived from the theoretical and empirical literature where possible. Simulations of the fate of all organisms with body masses between 10 µg and 150,000 kg (a range of 14 orders of magnitude) across the globe led to emergent properties at individual (e.g., growth rate), community (e.g., biomass turnover rates), ecosystem (e.g., trophic pyramids), and macroecological scales (e.g., global patterns of trophic structure) that are in general agreement with current data and theory. These properties emerged from our encoding of the biology of, and interactions among, individual organisms without any direct constraints on the properties themselves. Our results indicate that ecologists have gathered sufficient information to begin to build realistic, global, and mechanistic models of ecosystems, capable of predicting a diverse range of ecosystem properties and their response to human pressures
Wilson Lines and a Canonical Basis of SU(4) Heterotic Standard Models
The spontaneous breaking of SU(4) heterotic standard models by Z_3 x Z_3
Wilson lines to the MSSM with three right-handed neutrino supermultiplets and
gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1) x U(1) is explored. The two-dimensional
subspace of the Spin(10) Lie algebra that commutes with su(3)_C + su(2)_L is
analyzed. It is shown that there is a unique basis for which the initial soft
supersymmetry breaking parameters are uncorrelated and for which the U(1) x
U(1) field strengths have no kinetic mixing at any scale. If the Wilson lines
"turn on" at different scales, there is an intermediate regime with either a
left-right or a Pati-Salam type model. We compute their spectra directly from
string theory, and adjust the associated mass parameter so that all gauge
parameters exactly unify. A detailed analysis of the running gauge couplings
and soft gaugino masses is presented.Comment: 59 pages, 9 figure
The impact of predation by marine mammals on Patagonian toothfish longline fisheries
Predatory interaction of marine mammals with longline fisheries is observed globally, leading to partial or complete loss of the catch and in some parts of the world to considerable financial loss. Depredation can also create additional unrecorded fishing mortality of a stock and has the potential to introduce bias to stock assessments. Here we aim to characterise depredation in the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) fishery around South Georgia focusing on the spatio-temporal component of these interactions. Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella), sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), and orcas (Orcinus orca) frequently feed on fish hooked on longlines around South Georgia. A third of longlines encounter sperm whales, but loss of catch due to sperm whales is insignificant when compared to that due to orcas, which interact with only 5% of longlines but can take more than half of the catch in some cases. Orca depredation around South Georgia is spatially limited and focused in areas of putative migration routes, and the impact is compounded as a result of the fishery also concentrating in those areas at those times. Understanding the seasonal behaviour of orcas and the spatial and temporal distribution of “depredation hot spots” can reduce marine mammal interactions, will improve assessment and management of the stock and contribute to increased operational efficiency of the fishery. Such information is valuable in the effort to resolve the human-mammal conflict for resources
Approaching location-based services from a place-based perspective: from data to services?
Despite the seemingly obvious importance of a link between notions of place and the provision of context in location-based services (LBS), truly place-based LBS remain rare. Place is attractive as a concept for designing services as it focuses on ways in which people, rather than machines, represent and talk about places. We review papers which have extracted place-relevant information from a variety of sources, examining their rationales, the data sources used, the characteristics of the data under study and the ways in which place is represented. Although the data sources used are subject to a wide range of biases, we find that existing methods and data sources are capable of extracting a wide range of place-related information. We suggest categories of LBS which could profit from such information, for example, by using place-related natural language (e.g. vernacular placenames) in tracking and routing services and moving the focus from geometry to place semantics in location-based retrieval. A key future challenge will be to integrate data derived from multiple sources if we are to advance from individual case studies focusing on a single aspect of place to services which can deal with multiple aspects of place
