    Aptitud anaerobia en deportistas de combate del sexo femenino

    Se estudia en nivel de preparación anaerobia en tres selecciones femeninas de deportes de combate de alta calificación: 15 judocas, 7 esgrimistas de la modalidad sable y 16 taekwondoistas. Fueron medidos indicadores neuromusculares, al final de la preparación especial, utilizando los tests de ergosalto y de saltabilidad de Bosco, Se determinan las estadísticas descriptivas, significación de las diferencias entre deportes y la correlación entre indicadores. Se obtienen los resultados: Pala (15,7 ± 2,1-19,2 ± 1,5 W/Kg), Pana (14,5 ± 1,9-17,7 ± 1,2 W/Kg), Los SCAB, SSAB, SCPD, SCPCD y SDPC mas altos fueron los de las esgrimistas y la mejor coordinación se encontró en las competidoras de esgrima, mientras que los mayores valores de CELAS fueron los de las judocas. Los resultados obtenidos se corresponden con las características del gesto deportivo que prevalece en cada uno de los deportes estudiados

    Sound absorbing and insulating low-cost panels from end-of-life household materials for the development of vulnerable contexts in circular economy perspective

    From a construction point of view, neighborhoods with residents living at or below the poverty threshold are characterized by low energy efficiency buildings, in which people live in acoustic discomfort with no viable options for home improvements, as they usually can not afford the materials and labor costs associated. An alternative to this is to use low-cost insulating elements made of non-conventional materials with acceptable acoustic properties. Given that household materials at their end-of-life (EoLHM) are free of costs and available also to the more disadvantaged population, they can be used to build acoustic panels for such contexts. This approach embraces several benefits since it reduces the amount of waste produced, the footprint deriving from the extraction of new raw materials and, by highlighting the potential of the EoLHM, discourages the abandonment of waste. In this paper, the acoustic properties of EoLHM, such as cardboard, egg-cartons, clothes, metal elements and combinations of them, are investigated by means of the impedance tube technique. The measured sound absorption coefficient and transmission loss have shown that EoLHM can be used for the realization of acoustic panels. However, since none of the analyzed materials shows absorbing and insulating properties at the same time, EoLHM must be wisely selected. This innovative approach supports the circular economy and the improvement for the living condition of low-income households

    SRide: a server for identifying stabilizing residues in proteins

    Residues expected to play key roles in the stabilization of proteins [stabilizing residues (SRs)] are selected by combining several methods based mainly on the interactions of a given residue with its spatial, rather than its sequential neighborhood and by considering the evolutionary conservation of the residues. A residue is selected as a stabilizing residue if it has high surrounding hydrophobicity, high long-range order, high conservation score and if it belongs to a stabilization center. The definition of all these parameters and the thresholds used to identify the SRs are discussed in detail. The algorithm for identifying SRs was originally developed for TIM-barrel proteins [M. M. Gromiha, G. Pujadas, C. Magyar, S. Selvaraj, and I. Simon (2004), Proteins, 55, 316–329] and is now generalized for all proteins of known 3D structure.     Sports, morality and body. The voices of sportswomen under Franco's dictatorship

    The aim of this research is to study sportswomen's perceptions and experiences of women's sport in Francoist Spain (1939-1975). The main objective is to analyse the social, moral and aesthetic elements that are present in the experience of these athletes. This study was carried out with an intentional sample of 24 women from Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Basque Country, Catalonia and Valencia. They were interviewed by a network of researchers from six universities. Outstanding results show the existence of social limitations to start sports practice (particularly in the post-war period); the importance of sport as a character-building aspect; sport's remarkable influence on their body self-concept; and the incidence on sports of the mainstream moral discourse, which created a female model that even affected sports clothing. The main conclusion is that sportswomen in that period were pioneers and had to fight against most of society in order to develop their facet as athletes, as they would not follow the established model

    El propósito de este artículo fue determinar las medidas a adoptar para prevenir, diagnosticar y tratar la tríada de la mujer deportista. Métodos: Se comparan los reportes de numerosos estudios realizados acerca de las causas, diagnóstico y tratamiento de esta entidad, con experiencia acumulada en la atención a deportistas de alto rendimiento por especialistas que laboran en este campo. Resultados: Se hizo énfasis en los factores predisponentes y desencadenantes de la aparición de la tríada y se proponen medidas preventivas y curativas de intervención. Conclusiones: Se propone una estrategia encaminada a evitar la aparición de este síndrome

    Sustainable and low-cost solutions for thermal and acoustic refurbishment of old buildings

    This paper investigates the possibility to realize solutions for buildings thermal and acoustic refurbishment by using end-of-life household materials, such as cardboard, clothes, and egg-boxes. These solutions can be installed to improve the indoor quality in neighborhoods populated by people below the poverty threshold. The considered end-of-life household materials and their combination have been analyzed from the acoustic and thermal points of view. First of all, the sound insulation and the sound absorption properties have been determined by means of an impedance tube. Then, the summer and the winter thermal performances, when coupled to different wall systems, have been investigated analitically. The results suggest that good thermal and acoustic characteristics can be achieved in a contained thickness by coupling end-of-life household materials

    Conversion of end-of-life household materials into building insulating low-cost solutions for the development of vulnerable contexts: Review and outlook towards a circular and sustainable economy

    In a world increasingly aware of the environmental cost of the current production/ consumption model, the use of sustainable practices to reduce our environmental impact as a society becomes imperative. One way to reduce this impact is to increase the reuse of materials that are considered, by current definitions of ”waste”, at their end of life. End-of-Life Household Materials (EoLHM) can be defined as household waste materials that still possess exploitable properties, thus making them suitable for reuse. There are several studies in the literature that address the recycling of these materials. When it comes to their reuse, unfortunately, only a limited number of studies are available. This paper aims to fill this gap by investigating the possibility to convert EoLHM, such as clothes or packaging, into low-cost thermal insulating materials for the improvement of the indoor thermal comfort in buildings, especially for households at risk of suffering from energy poverty. For this purpose, a comprehensive literature review and a qualitative analysis of both commercial and EoLHM are proposed. Commercial thermal insulating materials analysis is used as a reference to measure the performance of EoLHM. Important aspects to be considered when choosing suitable EoLHM for a smart conversion and reuse are also investigated. The most important outcome of this investigation is the comprehension that the conversion of EoLHM into insulating material is possible, and it implies a direct reduction in waste production, with environmental benefits and positive social implications. However, some aspects such as adaptability, life expectancy, collection and storage are, at present, in need of further thinking and development to make the EoLHM reuse and re-conversion processes viable on a large (neighborhood/city) scale

    Non-monotonic behavior of weak-polyelectrolytes adsorption on a cationic surface: A Monte Carlo simulation study

    In this work, the weak polyelectrolyte (PE) adsorption on a strong cationic surface is studied with constant pH Monte Carlo simulations using a coarse-grained model. When a large number of PE chains is added to the system, the PE adsorbed amount vs pH curve exhibits a non-monotonic behavior, with the appearance of a maximum close to the intrinsic pKa0-value of the PE titratable groups. The apparent pKa-value of the PE chains shows a non-trivial tendency depending on the pH-value and the surface coverage degree. In increasing the pH-value, the small anions that accompany the cationic surface are replaced by PE chains and small cations. For pH>pKa0+1, an evident charge reversion of surface is observed. These results are explained analyzing the interplay between the attractive and repulsion electrostatic interactions between the different components of the system (inter- and intra-charged monomers of PE chains, the strong cationic surface and small ions) and their effects on the PE chain ionization.Fil: Narambuena, Claudio Fabian.
