Polymorphisms in the bradykinin B2 receptor gene and childhood asthma

Bradykinin has been suggested as one of the key mediators of bronchial asthma. Polymorphisms with a potential functional relevance have been described in the B2 bradykinin receptor gene. Study of these polymorphisms in 77 children with asthma and 73 controls revealed no association. However, when comparing the asthmatics according to their age at onset (before and after age 4), the exon 1 allele BE1-2G was significantly associated with late-onset asthma (p <0.05). Since BE1-2G has previously been shown to lead to a higher transcription rate of the B2 receptor, this result warrants further investigation of the role of bradykinin in conferring susceptibility to pediatric asthma

A solidão dos trabalhadores: sociabilidade contemporânea e degradação do trabalho

This article aims to problematize the relationships between work and sociability that emerged between the 1970’s and 1980’s. It questions whether today’s working conditions and situations are more illness-causing than those of the period when Taylorism and Fordism prevailed. Based on this questioning, the article also points out the mechanisms present in contemporary sociability capable of turning workplaces into spaces of degradation of solidarity bonds, into spaces of physical and mental illness, leading to the abandonment of ill workers.Este artigo tem por objetivo problematizar as relações de trabalho e a sociabilidade que emergem entre as décadas de 1970-1980. Questiona, neste contexto, se estaríamos diante de condições e situações de trabalho mais adoecedoras que aquelas vivenciadas no período de predomínio do taylorismo-fordismo. Salienta, com base neste questionamento, os mecanismos presentes na sociabilidade contemporânea capazes de converter os locais de trabalho em espaços de degradação dos laços de solidariedade, de adoecimento físico e mental, assim como de descarte dos trabalhadores adoecidos pelo trabalho

Sexualidade, gênero e suas relações de poder

O presente artigo de revisão de literatura aborda a questão de gênero como um conceito cuja utilização é relativamente nova, inclusive na psicologia. A partir da explicitação do conceito de gênero, faz a distinção entre as categorias gênero e sexo. Apresenta um breve histórico da origem e da construção desse conceito nas relações sociais. Ressalta a importância do discurso na construção do preconceito e da discriminação relacionados à mulher na sociedade, na família e no trabalho. O reconhecimento da diferença entre sexo e gênero é importante porque representa uma ruptura com os modelos utilizados anteriormente nos estudos científicos, nos quais os estereótipos de masculinidade e feminilidade ressaltavam sempre a primazia do homem sobre a mulher. A introdução da categoria gênero nos discursos é fundamental para que se aceite a igualdade entre homens e mulheres no que diz respeito a direitos políticos, econômicos, sociais, familiares e trabalhistas

La paradoja de la ciudadanía

O artigo aborda, a partir da crítica ao conceito de cidadania, os limites de sua aplicabilidade no marco das sociedades fundadas em classes sociais. Apresenta a retomada relativamente recente dos discursos construídos por diferentes segmentos sociais em torno dos direitos cidadãos, particularmente na fase aberta nos anos 1980, na qual predominam as políticas de perfil neoliberal e o processo de reorganização do trabalho e da produção, confrontando-os com a realidade a qual se encontra submetida a maioria da população.Based on the critical to the citizenship concept, this article broaches its limits of applicability in the societies established by social classes. It presents the relatively recent resumption of speeches that was constructed for different social segments around the citizens’ rights, particularly the phase begun in the 80’s, in which the neo-liberal politics and the work and production reorganization process predominated, collating them with the reality that the majority population is submitted to.El artículo aborda, a partir de la crítica al concepto de ciudadanía, los límites de su aplicabilidad en el marco de las sociedades fundadas en clases sociales. Proposta de corredor ecológico para as áreas de recarga direta do Aquífero Guarani em Santa Catarina - Brasil

As águas superficiais presentes nos rios e lagos estão cada vez mais poluídas e escassas, uma alternativa de uso, então, são as águas subterrâneas. O uso das águas subterrâneas requer certos cuidados como a realização de estudos que relevem a importância da inter-relação entre a superfície do solo e as camadas subterrâneas que armazenam a água que se caracterizam como aqüíferos. A problemática que motiva este estudo é o uso desenfreado das reservas de água do Aqüífero Guarani, onde não se leva em conta a relação demanda e reposição de água para os mananciais subterrâneos podendo levar rapidamente a um déficit hídrico. Desta forma, as áreas de recarga direta são elementos muito importantes nesta relação de demanda de consumo e recarga de água. Este trabalho poderá contribuir para o desenvolvimento de medidas para a gestão do território e controle da exploração/recarga do aqüífero através de uma proposta de delimitação para a criação de Corredor Ecológico nas áreas de recarga direta do Aqüífero Guarani no Estado de Santa Catarina. A identificação de áreas, com maior capacidade de proporcionar recarga de água de forma direta com qualidade e quantidade para as zonas de recarga direta do aqüífero em questão, foi feita através do uso de sistemas de informações geográficas, adaptação de metodologias para delimitação de corredor ecológico e processo de análise hierárquico. Assim, foi possível propor um corredor ecológico nas áreas de recarga direta do Aqüífero Guarani em Santa Catarina.Abstract : The water today and always will be our main source of life, reason for which if it must have a degree of attention raised for the conservation of this important resource. The superficial waters gifts in the rivers and lakes are each scarce time more polluted and, a use alternative, then, they is the underground waters. The use of underground waters requires certain cares as the accomplishment of studies that raise the importance of the interrelation enters the underground surface of the ground and layers that store the water that if characterizes as aquifer. Problematic that it motivates the this study it is the wild use of the water reserves of the Guarani Aquifer, where the relation is not taken in account water demand and replacement for the underground sources being able to lead quickly to a hydric deficit. In such a way, the areas of direct recharge are very important elements in this relation of demand of consumption and water recharge. This work will be able to contribute for the development of measures for the management of the territory and control of the exploration/recharge of the aquifer one through a proposal of delimitation for the creation of Ecological Runner in the areas of direct recharge of the Guarani Aquifer in the State of Santa Catarina. The identification of areas, with bigger capacity to provide to water recharge of direct form with quality and amount for the zones of direct recharge of the aquifer one in question, was made through the use of geographic information systems, adaptation of methodologies for delimitation of ecological runner and analytic hierarchy process. Thus, it was possible to consider an ecological runner in the areas of direct recharge of the Guarani Aquifer in Santa Catarina

Untersuchung zum Nutzen einer ungerichteten präanästhetischen Screeninguntersuchung von Blutbild und ausgewählten blutchemischen Parametern beim Hund

Der Sinn ungerichteter Reihenuntersuchungen, sogenannter Screening-untersuchungen, als Ergänzung zur präanästhetischen Untersuchung wird sowohl in Human- als auch Veterinärmedizin kontrovers diskutiert. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, den Nutzen von Blutuntersuchungen beim Hund im Sinne eines ungerichteten Screenings zu prüfen. Bei 1537 Hunden wurde im Routinebetrieb der Klinik vor jeder Narkose zunächst eine standardisierte Anamnese erhoben und eine standardisierte klinische Untersu-chung durchgeführt. Im Anschluss hieran wurden Blutproben für die Untersuchung verschiedener Parameter des Blutbildes und der Blutchemie entnommen. 1123 Pati-enten wurden präanästhetisch vom Anästhesisten als „benötigt keine Laboruntersu-chung“ eingestuft. Diese Patientengruppe hätte ein ungerichtetes präanästhetisches Laborscreening betroffen und wurde für die Auswertung der Blutuntersuchung herangezogen. Der Anteile der Werte, die außerhalb des jeweiligen Referenzbereichs lagen, schwankte je nach Parameter zwischen 2 und 85 Prozent. Insgesamt wurden für die einzelnen Parameter deutlich mehr Abweichungen festgestellt als in vergleichbaren humanmedizinischen Studien. Der Anteil geringgradiger Abweichungen war hierbei sehr hoch. Aufregungsbedingte Blutbildveränderungen, Vorbehandlungen, der verwendete Referenzbereich und bei sehr jungen Hunden altersbedingte Abweichungen kamen als mögliche Ursachen für diese Veränderungen in Betracht. In elf Prozent der Fälle ließen sich deutliche Abweichungen einzelner Laborparameter vom Referenzbereich feststellen, die retrospektiv zu einer Neueinschätzung des jeweiligen Narkoserisikos beim Patienten führten. Hieraus hätte sich für 6,5 % aller Patienten eine Änderung im perioperativen Management ergeben. In humanmedizinischen Studien liegt der Anteil der Patienten, bei denen ein Laborscreening eine Änderung des Narkosemanagements ergeben hätte bei unter einem Prozent. Verschiedene spezifisch veterinärmedizinische Gründe werden für diese Diskrepanz vermutet. Aufgrund der Besitzeranamnese statt Patientenanamnese und aufgrund verschiedener Störfaktoren für die klinische Untersuchung wie Aufregung oder mangelnde Kooperationsbereitschaft des Patienten kann von einem höheren Prozentsatz nicht erfasster Patienten mit höhe-rem Narkoserisiko ausgegangen werden. Bezüglich aller untersuchten Patienten konnte ein deutlicher Einfluss des Alters auf die Risikoeinschätzung des Anästhesisten festgestellt werden. Eine Untersuchung auf Korrelationen zwischen Laborwerten und dem Alter der Tiere zeigte im Falle von Thrombozytenzahl, ALAT, Natriumkonzentration und Gesamteiweißkonzentration eine positive Korrelation zum Alter, im Falle der Glukose eine negative Korrelation. Der Einfluss des Alters auf die Laborparameter ist aber in allen Fällen zu gering ausgeprägt um für die Beurteilung der Laborparameter hinsichtlich einer Narkoserelevanz entscheidend zu sein. Die Altersstruktur der „laborauffälligen“ Patienten weist im Vergleich zu den „laborunauffälligen“ Patienten keinen statistisch sicherbaren Unterschied auf. Der Einfluss verschiedener Rassen auf die Variabilität der Laborparameter wurde anhand der Korrelation von Körpermasse und Laborparametern näherungsweise untersucht. Nur für Kreatinin konnte ein deutlicher Zusammenhang zwischen Kör-permasse und Laborwert festgestellt werden, was wahrscheinlich auf die unter-schiedliche Bemuskelung kleiner und großer Hunde, bezogen auf das Körperge-wicht, zurückzuführen ist. Für die Laborwertinterpretation relevante rassebedingte Unterschiede konnten jedoch nicht ausgemacht werden. Zusammenfassend zeigen die Ergebnisse dieser Studie deutliche Unterschiede zu denen vergleichbarer Humanmedizinischer Studien. Es können mittels eines unge-richteten Laborscreenings deutlich mehr relevante Laborwertveränderungen festge-stellt werden, die auch zu einer Neueinschätzung der Risikosituation für den Patienten führen können. Ein Einfluss des Alters auf die Zahl der Laborwertveränderungen konnte im Rahmen dieser Studie nicht festgestellt bzw. statistisch gesichert werden. Insgesamt zeigt der Anteil relevanter Laborwertveränderungen, dass präanästhetische Blutuntersuchungen beim Hund eine sinnvolle Ergänzung zur präanästhetischen Untersuchung darstellen können

Grid-enabled estimation of structural economic models

In this paper we present our experiences with the execution of structural economic models over the Grid using ”cloud computing”. We describe cases of distributed implementation and execution of occupational choice and financial deepening models of economic growth. We show how the application of Grid technology and resources naturally fits the studies of economic systems, by allowing us to capture effects of computationally challenging real-world characteristics such as heterogeneity of wealth, talent and access costs among economic agents
