    ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIULCER ACTIVITY OF ABRUS PRECATORIUS LEAF EXTRACT AGAINST ACETIC ACID-INDUCED GASTRIC ULCER IN RATS

    Objective: The present study deals with the study of antiulcer activity of Abrus precatorius leaf extract in acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers was studied in rats. Methods: In the present study, A. precatorius leaf extract was carried out in antiulcer activity against acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in rats. A. precatorius at doses of 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg were administered orally once daily for 10 days. Results: It was found that extract significantly reduced ulcer index. The plant leaves made gastric anti-secretory effect by decreasing gastric volume and acidity. Then, gastric mucin was increased, which showed gastric cytoprotective effect. The plant showed the prevention effect of increased lipid peroxidation during ulceration by acetic acid. Activities of the antioxidant enzymes were enhanced during ulceration by this plant leaves. Conclusion: Leaves of A. precatorius Linn. could decrease acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers in rats and this antiulcerogenic activity was mediated through antioxidant defense mechanism

    Pine needle biochar as a low cost adsorbent for removal of malachite green dye from wastewater

    180-187Pine needle biochar (PNB) has been examined as a promising cost-effective adsorbent using batch method for mitigation of Malachite green (MG) dye from synthetic wastewater. The effects of time of equilibration, equilibrium pH, dye concentration and temperature have been studied on adsorption of malachite green. Adsorption kinetics of MG onto PNB conformed to pseudo-first-order reaction. Adsorption of the dye onto PNB fitted well to Freundlich isotherm model indicating that multilayer adsorption and adsorption capacities (KF) are the highest (6837.40 mg/kg) at pH 7.0, intermediate (4073.61 mg/kg) at pH 9.0 and minimum (1196.05 mg/kg) at pH 4.6. Adsorption of malachite green regularly increased with increase in temperature. The evaluation of thermodynamic parameters indicate that adsorption of MG onto PNB was a spontaneous and endothermic reaction with increase in the disorderliness of the system.     Prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding and associated factors among mothers in rural Bangladesh: a cross-sectional study

In Bangladesh, the prevalence of EBF remained largely unchanged for nearly two decades and was 43% in 2007. However, in 2011, a prevalence of 64% was reported, an increase by 21 percentage points. The reasons for this large change remain speculative at this point. Thus to investigate the issue further, this study was conducted. The objective was to assess the prevalence of EBF and associated factors among mothers having children aged 0-6 months in rural Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Mirzapur Upazilla (sub district) among 121 mothers of infants aged 0-6 months. Eligible mothers were identified and randomly selected using the demographic surveillance system's computerized database that is updated weekly. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for interviews that inquired information on socio-demographic characteristics, obstetric, health service, breastfeeding related factors (initiation of breastfeeding, prelacteal feeding and colostrum feeding) and economic factors. EBF prevalence was calculated using 24 hour recall method. In multivariate analysis, a logistic regression model was developed using stepwise modeling to analyze the factors associated with EBF. Results: The prevalence of EBF in the last 24 hours preceding the survey was 36%. Bivariate and multivariate analysis revealed no significant association between EBF and its possible predictors at 0.05 level of alpha. However, there was some evidence of an association between EBF and having a caesarean delivery (OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.21, 1.06). In multivariate analysis, type of delivery: caesarean (AOR = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.19, 1.03) and wealth quintile: richer (AOR = 2.40, 95% CI: 0.94, 6.16) also showed some evidence of an association with EBF. Conclusion: The prevalence of EBF in Mirzapur (36%) is lower than the national figure (64%). Prelacteal feeding was not uncommon. These findings suggest that there is a need for breastfeeding support provided by health services. Hence, promotion of EBF during the first six months of life needs to be addressed and future breastfeeding promotion programmes should give special attention to those women who are not practicing EBF.Publishe

    Detrital Zircons in Crustal Evolution: A Perspective from the Indian Subcontinent

    AbstractDetrital zircons are frequently used for crustal evolutionary studies as they sample vast regions of the continental crust. In the present study, we utilise newly compiled U-Pb detrital zircon data from the Indian subcontinent as well as a compilation of previously reported global data along with Hf isotopes of modern and ancient sediments in order to understand crustal evolution in the Indian subcontinent. The detrital zircon U-Pb age data from the Indian subcontinent show peaks (at 2400–2700, 1600–1900, 850–1200, and 450–550 Ma) that correlate with the formation of major known supercontinents. In addition, two other peaks at 3200–3400 Ma and <100 Ma do not correspond to periods of supercontinent formation. The former peak may represent uneven geographic sample density due to enhanced erosion and exhumation of Archean sources. The distinctly younger (<100 Ma) detrital zircon age peak may represent zircon preservation due to the Himalayan orogeny. The zircon Hf model ages from the Indian subcontinent suggest that the Precambrian crust was the major source of continental crust with younger ages. The conspicuous shift to positive εHf (t) at ca. 3600 Ma from detrital zircons of the Indian subcontinent may underscore a change in geodynamic processes, while the highly negative values post ~3200 Ma may be associated with the crustal reworking. A wavelet analysis of detrital zircons from the Indian and global databases reveals a prominent cyclicity of ~800 Myr and ∼350 Myr plausibly representing the supercontinent cycle and its half cycle.     Timing Offset Calibration of CZTI instrument aboard ASTROSAT

    The radio as well as the high energy emission mechanism in pulsars is yet not understood properly. A multi-wavelength study is likely to help in better understanding of such processes. The first Indian space-based observatory, ASTROSAT, has five instruments aboard, which cover the electromagnetic spectrum from infra-red (1300 A˚\AA) to hard X-ray (380 KeV). Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager (CZTI), one of the five instruments is a hard X-ray telescope functional over an energy range of 20-380 KeV. We aim to estimate the timing offset introduced in the data acquisition pipeline of the instrument, which will help in time alignment of high energy time series with those from two other ground-based observatories, viz. the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). PSR B0531+21 is a well-studied pulsar with nearly aligned radio and hard X-ray pulse profiles. We use simultaneous observations of this pulsar with the ASTROSAT, the ORT and the GMRT. The pulsar was especially observed using the ORT with almost daily cadence to obtain good timing solutions. We also supplement the ORT data with archival FERMI data for estimation of timing noise. The timing offset of ASTROSAT instruments was estimated from fits to arrival time data at the ASTROSAT and the radio observatories. We estimate the offset between the GMRT and the ASTROSAT-CZTI to be -4716 ±\pm 50 μs\mu s. The corresponding offset with the ORT was -29639 ±\pm 50 μs\mu s.     Nanostructured Manganese Hexacyanidocobaltate(III) as Heterogeneous Catalyst for Solvent-Free Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

    Manganese hexacyanidocobaltate(III) nanostructures have been synthesized using double decomposition method and characterized in terms of CHNS analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, thermal analysis, infrared spectral studies and transmission electron microscopic technique. The transmission electron microscopic image of the synthesized material showed that it is consisting of roughly spherical shaped particle with size range of 30-60 nm. The catalytic activity of the synthesized material was studied for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, using H2O2 as oxidant, under solvent-free conditions. The characterization of the oxidation product of benzyl alcohol and its quantitative estimation was done using gas chromatography. The synthesized material was found to be an effective heterogeneous catalyst with a high selectivity towards benzaldehyde as the oxidation product. It showed 31% conversion of benzyl alcohol under the optimized conditions of various reaction parameters, namely, amount of catalyst, reaction temperature, benzyl alcohol to H2O2 molar ratio and the reaction time

    The dominant Anopheles vectors of human malaria in the Asia-Pacific region: occurrence data, distribution maps and bionomic précis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The final article in a series of three publications examining the global distribution of 41 dominant vector species (DVS) of malaria is presented here. The first publication examined the DVS from the Americas, with the second covering those species present in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Here we discuss the 19 DVS of the Asian-Pacific region. This region experiences a high diversity of vector species, many occurring sympatrically, which, combined with the occurrence of a high number of species complexes and suspected species complexes, and behavioural plasticity of many of these major vectors, adds a level of entomological complexity not comparable elsewhere globally. To try and untangle the intricacy of the vectors of this region and to increase the effectiveness of vector control interventions, an understanding of the contemporary distribution of each species, combined with a synthesis of the current knowledge of their behaviour and ecology is needed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Expert opinion (EO) range maps, created with the most up-to-date expert knowledge of each DVS distribution, were combined with a contemporary database of occurrence data and a suite of open access, environmental and climatic variables. Using the Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) modelling method, distribution maps of each DVS were produced. The occurrence data were abstracted from the formal, published literature, plus other relevant sources, resulting in the collation of DVS occurrence at 10116 locations across 31 countries, of which 8853 were successfully geo-referenced and 7430 were resolved to spatial areas that could be included in the BRT model. A detailed summary of the information on the bionomics of each species and species complex is also presented.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This article concludes a project aimed to establish the contemporary global distribution of the DVS of malaria. The three articles produced are intended as a detailed reference for scientists continuing research into the aspects of taxonomy, biology and ecology relevant to species-specific vector control. This research is particularly relevant to help unravel the complicated taxonomic status, ecology and epidemiology of the vectors of the Asia-Pacific region. All the occurrence data, predictive maps and EO-shape files generated during the production of these publications will be made available in the public domain. We hope that this will encourage data sharing to improve future iterations of the distribution maps.</p

    Fc-Optimized Anti-CD25 Depletes Tumor-Infiltrating Regulatory T Cells and Synergizes with PD-1 Blockade to Eradicate Established Tumors

    CD25 is expressed at high levels on regulatory T (Treg) cells and was initially proposed as a target for cancer immunotherapy. However, anti-CD25 antibodies have displayed limited activity against established tumors. We demonstrated that CD25 expression is largely restricted to tumor-infiltrating Treg cells in mice and humans. While existing anti-CD25 antibodies were observed to deplete Treg cells in the periphery, upregulation of the inhibitory Fc gamma receptor (FcγR) IIb at the tumor site prevented intra-tumoral Treg cell depletion, which may underlie the lack of anti-tumor activity previously observed in pre-clinical models. Use of an anti-CD25 antibody with enhanced binding to activating FcγRs led to effective depletion of tumor-infiltrating Treg cells, increased effector to Treg cell ratios, and improved control of established tumors. Combination with anti-programmed cell death protein-1 antibodies promoted complete tumor rejection, demonstrating the relevance of CD25 as a therapeutic target and promising substrate for future combination approaches in immune-oncology
