In this paper, we tried to reread the violence shown by Penthesilea as the revenge of a woman, who does not accept a sexist vision, a violent and possessive love as imposed to her by Achilles. She does not have other choice but to take revenge by showing that, although obsessed by love, she cannot accept slavery, even that of love, nor the continued rape of a marital relationship
CD34âpositive superficial myxofibrosarcoma: a potential diagnostic pitfall
Background Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) arises most commonly in the proximal extremities of the elderly, where it may involve subcutaneous and dermal tissues and masquerade as benign entities in limited biopsy samples. We encountered such a case, in which positivity for CD34 and morphologic features were initially wrongly interpreted as a âlowâfat/fatâfreeâ spindle cell/pleomorphic lipoma. Case series have not assessed prevalence of CD34 reactivity among cutaneous examples of MFS. Methods We performed a systematic review of our institution's experience, selecting from among unequivocal MFS resection specimens those superficial cases in which a limited biopsy sample might prove difficult to interpret. These cases were immunostained for CD34 and tabulated for clinicopathologic characteristics. Results After review of all MFS diagnoses over 5âyears (nâ=â56), we identified a study group of superficial MFS for comparison to the index case (total nâ=â8). Of these, the index and three additional cases (4 of 8, 50%; 2 low, 2 high grade) demonstrated positive staining for CD34 , with diffuse staining of spindled cells including cellular processes. Four additional cases showed no or equivocal/rare staining. Conclusions CD34 positivity should be recognized as prevalent among such cases and should not be inappropriately construed as inveighing against a diagnosis of MFS in favor of benign entities.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/98187/1/cup12158.pd
The Palomar Transient Factory photometric catalog 1.0
We construct a photometrically calibrated catalog of non-variable sources
from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) observations. The first version of
this catalog presented here, the PTF photometric catalog 1.0, contains
calibrated R_PTF-filter magnitudes for about 21 million sources brighter than
magnitude 19, over an area of about 11233 deg^2. The magnitudes are provided in
the PTF photometric system, and the color of a source is required in order to
convert these magnitudes into other magnitude systems. We estimate that the
magnitudes in this catalog have typical accuracy of about 0.02 mag with respect
to magnitudes from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The median repeatability of
our catalog's magnitudes for stars between 15 and 16 mag, is about 0.01 mag,
and it is better than 0.03 mag for 95% of the sources in this magnitude range.
The main goal of this catalog is to provide reference magnitudes for
photometric calibration of visible light observations. Subsequent versions of
this catalog, which will be published incrementally online, will be extended to
a larger sky area and will also include g_PTF-filter magnitudes, as well as

Near-IR Search for Lensed Supernovae Behind Galaxy Clusters - II. First Detection and Future Prospects
Powerful gravitational telescopes in the form of massive galaxy clusters can
be used to enhance the light collecting power over a limited field of view by
about an order of magnitude in flux. This effect is exploited here to increase
the depth of a survey for lensed supernovae at near-IR wavelengths. A pilot SN
search program conducted with the ISAAC camera at VLT is presented. Lensed
galaxies behind the massive clusters A1689, A1835 and AC114 were observed for a
total of 20 hours split into 2, 3 and 4 epochs respectively, separated by
approximately one month to a limiting magnitude J<24 (Vega). Image subtractions
including another 20 hours worth of archival ISAAC/VLT data were used to search
for transients with lightcurve properties consistent with redshifted
supernovae, both in the new and reference data. The feasibility of finding
lensed supernovae in our survey was investigated using synthetic lightcurves of
supernovae and several models of the volumetric Type Ia and core-collapse
supernova rates as a function of redshift. We also estimate the number of
supernova discoveries expected from the inferred star formation rate in the
observed galaxies. The methods consistently predict a Poisson mean value for
the expected number of SNe in the survey between N_SN=0.8 and 1.6 for all
supernova types, evenly distributed between core collapse and Type Ia SN. One
transient object was found behind A1689, 0.5" from a galaxy with photometric
redshift z_gal=0.6 +- 0.15. The lightcurve and colors of the transient are
consistent with being a reddened Type IIP SN at z_SN=0.59. The lensing model
predicts 1.4 magnitudes of magnification at the location of the transient,
without which this object would not have been detected in the near-IR ground

The Massive Progenitor of the Possible Type II-Linear Supernova 2009hd in Messier 66
We present observations of SN2009hd in the nearby galaxy M66. This SN is one
of the closest to us in recent years but heavily obscured by dust, rendering it
unusually faint in the optical, given its proximity. We find that the observed
properties of SN2009hd support its classification as a possible Type II-L SN, a
relatively rare subclass of CC-SNe. High-precision relative astrometry has been
employed to attempt to identify a SN progenitor candidate, based on a
pixel-by-pixel comparison between HST F555W and F814W images of the SN site
prior to explosion and at late times. A progenitor candidate is identified in
the F814W images only; this object is undetected in F555W. Significant
uncertainty exists in the astrometry, such that we cannot definitively identify
this object as the SN progenitor. Via insertion of artificial stars into the
pre-SN HST images, we are able to constrain the progenitor's properties to
those of a possible supergiant, with M(F555W)0>-7.6 mag and (V-I) 0>0.99 mag.
The magnitude and color limits are consistent with a luminous RSG; however,
they also allow for the possibility that the star could have been more yellow
than red. From a comparison with theoretical massive-star evolutionary tracks,
which include rotation and pulsationally enhanced mass loss, we can place a
conservative upper limit on the initial mass for the progenitor of <20 M_sun.
If the actual mass of the progenitor is near the upper range allowed by our
derived mass limit, then it would be consistent with that for the identified
progenitors of the SNII-L 2009kr and the high-luminosity SNII-P 2008cn. The
progenitors of these three SNe may possibly bridge the gap between lower-mass
RSG that explode as SNeII-P and LBV, or more extreme RSG, from which the more
exotic SNeII-n may arise. Very late-time imaging of the SN2009hd site may

Discovery of Variability of the Progenitor of SN 2011dh in M51 Using the Large Binocular Telescope
We show that the candidate progenitor of the core-collapse SN 2011dh in M51
(8 Mpc away) was fading by 0.039 +- 0.006 mag/year during the three years prior
to the supernova, and that this level of variability is moderately unusual for
other similar stars in M 51. While there are uncertainties about whether the
true progenitor was a blue companion to this candidate, the result illustrates
that there are no technical challenges to obtaining fairly high precision light
curves of supernova progenitors using ground based observations of nearby (<10
Mpc) galaxies with wide field cameras on 8m-class telescopes. While other
sources of variability may dominate, it is even possible to reach into the
range of evolution rates required by the quasi-static evolution of the stellar
envelope. For M 81, where we have many more epochs and a slightly longer time
baseline, our formal 3 sigma sensitivity to slow changes is presently 3
millimag/year for a M_V ~= -8 mag star. In short, there is no observational
barrier to determining whether the variability properties of stars in their
last phases of evolution (post Carbon ignition) are different from earlier

Exploring the Optical Transient Sky with the Palomar Transient Factory
The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) is a wide-field experiment designed to
investigate the optical transient and variable sky on time scales from minutes
to years. PTF uses the CFH12k mosaic camera, with a field of view of 7.9 deg^2
and a plate scale of 1 asec/pixel, mounted on the the Palomar Observatory
48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope. The PTF operation strategy is devised to probe
the existing gaps in the transient phase space and to search for theoretically
predicted, but not yet detected, phenomena, such as fallback supernovae,
macronovae, .Ia supernovae and the orphan afterglows of gamma-ray bursts. PTF
will also discover many new members of known source classes, from cataclysmic
variables in their various avatars to supernovae and active galactic nuclei,
and will provide important insights into understanding galactic dynamics
(through RR Lyrae stars) and the Solar system (asteroids and near-Earth
objects). The lessons that can be learned from PTF will be essential for the
preparation of future large synoptic sky surveys like the Large Synoptic Survey
Telescope. In this paper we present the scientific motivation for PTF and
