Validation of the optical Aktiia bracelet in different body positions for the persistent monitoring of blood pressure.
The diagnosis of hypertension and the adjustment of antihypertensive drugs are evolving from isolated measurements performed at the physician offices to the full phenotyping of patients in real-life conditions. Indeed, the strongest predictor of cardiovascular risk comes from night measurements. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that a wearable device (the Aktiia Bracelet) can accurately estimate BP in the most common body positions of daily life and thus become a candidate solution for the BP phenotyping of patients. We recruited 91 patients with BP ranging from low to hypertensive levels and compared BP values from the Aktiia Bracelet against auscultatory reference values for 4 weeks according to an extended ISO 81060-2 protocol. After initializing on day one, the observed means and standard deviations of differences for systolic BP were of 0.46 ± 7.75 mmHg in the sitting position, - 2.44 ± 10.15 mmHg in the lying, - 3.02 ± 6.10 mmHg in the sitting with the device on the lap, and - 0.62 ± 12.51 mmHg in the standing position. Differences for diastolic BP readings were respectively of 0.39 ± 6.86 mmHg, - 1.93 ± 7.65 mmHg, - 4.22 ± 6.56 mmHg and - 4.85 ± 9.11 mmHg. This study demonstrates that a wearable device can accurately estimate BP in the most common body positions compared to auscultation, although precision varies across positions. While wearable persistent BP monitors have the potential to facilitate the identification of individual BP phenotypes at scale, their prognostic value for cardiovascular events and its association with target organ damage will need cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Deploying this technology at a community level may be also useful to drive public health interventions against the epidemy of hypertension

Ni Catalysts Based on Attapulgite for Hydrogen Production through the Glycerol Steam Reforming Reaction
Attapulgite (ATP, a natural clay) was used as carrier to produce a nickel-based catalyst (Ni/ATP) for the work that is presented herein. Its catalytic performance was comparatively assessed with a standard Ni/Al2O3 sample for the glycerol steam reforming (GSR) reaction. It was shown that the ATP support led to lower mean Ni crystallite size, i.e., it increased the dispersion of the active phase, to the easier reduction of NiO and also increased the basicity of the catalytic material. It was also shown that it had a significant effect on the distribution of the gaseous products. Specifically, for the Ni/ATP catalyst, the production of liquid effluents was minimal and subsequently, conversion of glycerol into gaseous products was higher. Importantly, the Ni/ATP favored the conversion into H2 and CO2 to the detriment of CO and CH4. The stability experiments, which were undertaken at a low WGFR, showed that the activity of both catalysts was affected with time as a result of carbon deposition and/or metal particle sintering. An examination of the spent catalysts revealed that the coke deposits consisted of filamentous carbon, a type that is known to encapsulate the active phase with fatal consequences
Diagnosis of Fanconi Anaemia (FA) in dizygotic twins
In this study we report on a case of FA in dizygotic twins with characteristic congenital abnormalities and the same deletions of the FANCA gene
Publication rates of editorial board members in oral health journals
The aim of this study was to measure the publication rate of editorial board members in their board journals and to evaluate associated variables. We evaluated the ten highest-ranked journals according to the 5-year impact factor under ‘Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine’ subject category for 2010, 2011, and 2012. All original research papers with at least one member of the editorial board as author were counted. Final analyses assessed associated variables such as size of the editorial board, number of papers published each year, and each journal’s impact factor. Overall, there was an increase in the average number of articles published from 2010 (115.2 ± 52.2) to 2012 (134.7 ± 47.4). The number and percentage of articles published with editorial board members as authors over the three years did not follow the same pattern, with a slight decrease from 2010 to 2011 and an increase in 2012. The number of articles with editorial board members as authors was significantly higher for journals with impact factors ≥4.0. Journals with a higher impact factor and larger editorial board were associated with higher chances of editorial board members publishing in their respective journals. Participation of editorial board members as authors in publishing varies significantly among journals
Synergistic effects of activated carbon and nano-zerovalent copper on the performance of hydroxyapatite-alginate beads for the removal of As\u3csup\u3e3+\u3c/sup\u3e from aqueous solution
© 2019 Elsevier Ltd In this study, activated carbon (AC) and nano-zerovalent copper (nZVCu) functionalized hydroxyapatite (HA) and alginate beads were synthesized and used for the removal of As3+ from aqueous solution. The characterization by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, BET surface area analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed successful formation of the AC/nZVCu/HA-alginate, nZVCu/HA-alginate, AC/HA-alginate, and HA-alginate beads. The scanning electron microscopy and surface analysis revealed the prepared beads to be highly mesoporous which led to the maximum adsorption of As3+, i.e., 13.97, 29.33, 30.96, and 39.06 mg/g by HA-alginate, AC/HA-alginate, nZVCu/HA-alginate, and AC/nZVCu/HA-alginate beads, respectively. The thermogravimteric analysis showed the nZVCu/HA-alginate beads to be highly stable while the AC composite beads as the least stable to heat treatment. The HA-alginate beads achieved 39% removal of As3+, however, removal efficiency was promoted to 95% by coupling AC and nZVCu with HA-alginate beads at a reaction time of 120 min. The removal of As3+ by the prepared AC & nZVCu coupled HA-alginate beads was promoted with increasing [As3+]0 and [AC/nZVCu/HA-alginate]0. The pH of aqueous solution significantly influenced the removal of As3+ by AC/nZVCu/HA-alginate beads and maximum removal was achieved at pH 5.8. Freundlich adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were found to best fit the removal of As3+ by the synthesized beads. The high performance of AC/nZVCu/HA-alginate beads in the removal of As3+ even after seven cyclic treatment as well as least leaching of Cu ions into aqueous solution suggest enhanced reusability and stability of HA-alginate beads by coupling with AC and nZVCu. The results suggest that the synthesized beads have good potential for the removal of As3+ from aqueous solutions
Electroexcitation of the at low momentum transfer
We report on new p measurements at the
resonance at the low momentum transfer region. The mesonic
cloud dynamics is predicted to be dominant and rapidly changing in this
kinematic region offering a test bed for chiral effective field theory
calculations. The new data explore the low dependence of the resonant
quadrupole amplitudes while extending the measurements of the Coulomb
quadrupole amplitude to the lowest momentum transfer ever reached. The results
disagree with predictions of constituent quark models and are in reasonable
agreement with dynamical calculations that include pion cloud effects, chiral
effective field theory and lattice calculations. The reported measurements
suggest that improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and
provide valuable input that will allow their refinements
