    Detailed Characterization of Conventional and Low Temperature Dual Fuel Combustion in Compression Ignition Engines

    The goal of this study is to assess conventional and low temperature dual fuel combustion in light- and heavy-duty multi-cylinder compression ignition engines in terms of combustion characterization, performance, and emissions. First, a light-duty compression ignition engine is converted to a dual fuel engine and instrumented for in-cylinder pressure measurements. The primary fuels, methane and propane, are each introduced into the system by means of fumigation before the turbocharger, ensuring the airuel composition is well-mixed. Experiments are performed at 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 bar BMEP at an engine speed of 1800 RPM. Heat release analyses reveal that the ignition delay and subsequent combustion processes are dependent on the primary fuel type and concentration, pilot quantity, and loading condition. At low load, diesel-ignited propane yields longer ignition delay periods than diesel-ignited methane, while at high load the reactivity of propane is more pronounced, leading to shorter ignition delays. At high load (BMEP = 10 bar), the rapid heat release associated with diesel-ignited propane appears to occur even before pilot injection, possibly indicating auto-ignition of the propane-air mixture. Next, a modern, heavy-duty compression ignition engine is commissioned with an open architecture controller and instrumented for in-cylinder pressure measurements. Initial diesel-ignited propane dual fuel experiments (fumigated before the turbocharger) at 1500 RPM reveal that the maximum percent energy substitution (PES) of propane is limited to 86, 60, 33, and 25 percent at 5, 10, 15, and 20 bar BMEP, respectively. Fueling strategy, injection strategy, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate, and intake boost pressure are varied in order to maximize the PES of propane at 10 bar BMEP, which increases from 60 PES to 80 PES of propane. Finally, diesel-ignited propane dual fuel low temperature combustion (LTC) is implemented using early injection timings (50 DBTDC) at 5 bar BMEP. A sweep of injection timings from 10 DBTDC to 50 DBTDC reveals the transition from conventional to low temperature dual fuel combustion, indicated by ultra-low NOx and smoke emissions. Optimization of the dual fuel LTC concept yields less than 0.02 g/kW-hr NOx and 0.06 FSN smoke at 93 PES of propane

    Modeling CO Emission: II. The Physical Characteristics that Determine the X factor in Galactic Molecular Clouds

    We investigate how the X factor, the ratio of H_2 column density (NH2) to velocity-integrated CO intensity (W), is determined by the physical properties of gas in model molecular clouds (MCs). We perform radiative transfer calculations on chemical-MHD models to compute X. Using integrated NH2 and W reproduces the limited range in X found in observations, resulting in a mean value X=2\times10^20 s/cm^2/K^1/km^1 from the Galactic MC model. However, in limited velocity intervals, X can take on a much larger range due to CO line saturation. Thus, X strongly depends on both the range in gas velocities and volume densities. The temperature (T) variations within individual MCs do not strongly affect X, as dense gas contributes most to setting X. For fixed velocity and density structure, gas with higher T has higher W, yielding X ~ T^-1/2 for T~20-100 K. We demonstrate that the linewidth-size scaling relation does not influence the X factor - only the range in velocities is important. Clouds with larger linewidths, regardless of the linewidth-size relation, have a higher W, corresponding to a lower value of X, scaling roughly as X ~ sigma^-1/2. The "mist" model, consisting of optically thick cloudlets with well-separated velocities, does not accurately reflect the conditions in a turbulent MC. We propose that the observed cloud-average values of X ~ XGal is simply a result of the limited range in NH2, temperatures, and velocities found in Galactic MCs - a ~constant value of X therefore does not require any linewidth-size relation, or that MCs are virialized objects. Since gas properties likely differ (slightly) between clouds, masses derived through a standard X should only be considered as a rough first estimate. For temperatures T~10-20 K, velocity dispersions ~1-6 km/s, and NH2~2-20\times10^21 cm^-2, we find cloud-averaged X ~ 2-4\times10^20 s/cm^2/K^1/km^1 for Solar-metallicity models.Comment: 24 pages, including 21 Figures, Accepted to MNRA

    Imipenem resistance of Pseudomonas in pneumonia: a systematic literature review

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pneumonia, and particularly nosocomial (NP) and ventilator-associated pneumonias (VAP), results in high morbidity and costs. NPs in particular are likely to be caused by <it>Pseudomonas aeruginosa </it>(PA), ~20% of which in observational studies are resistant to imipenem. We sought to identify the burden of PA imipenem resistance in pneumonia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We conducted a systematic literature review of randomized controlled trials (RCT) of imipenem treatment for pneumonia published in English between 1993 and 2008. We extracted study, population and treatment characteristics, and proportions caused by PA. Endpoints of interest were: PA resistance to initial antimicrobial treatment, clinical success, microbiologic eradication and on-treatment emergence of resistance of PA.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 46 studies identified, 20 (N = 4,310) included patients with pneumonia (imipenem 1,667, PA 251; comparator 1,661, PA 270). Seven were double blind, and 7 included US data. Comparator arms included a β-lactam (17, [penicillin 6, carbapenem 4, cephalosporin 7, monobactam 1]), aminoglycoside 2, vancomycin 1, and a fluoroquinolone 5; 5 employed double coverage. Thirteen focused exclusively on pneumonia and 7 included pneumonia and other diagnoses. Initial resistance was present in 14.6% (range 4.2-24.0%) of PA isolates in imipenem and 2.5% (range 0.0-7.4%) in comparator groups. Pooled clinical success rates for PA were 45.2% (range 0.0-72.0%) for imipenem and 74.9% (range 0.0-100.0%) for comparator regimens. Microbiologic eradication was achieved in 47.6% (range 0.0%-100.0%) of isolates in the imipenem and 52.8% (range 0.0%-100.0%) in the comparator groups. Resistance emerged in 38.7% (range 5.6-77.8%) PA isolates in imipenem and 21.9% (range 4.8-56.5%) in comparator groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In the 15 years of RCTs of imipenem for pneumonia, PA imipenem resistance rates are high, and PA clinical success and microbiologic eradication rates are directionally lower for imipenem than for comparators. Conversely, initial and treatment-emergent resistance is more likely with the imipenem than the comparator regimens.</p

    Radiographs Reveal Exceptional Forelimb Strength in the Sabertooth Cat, Smilodon fatalis

    Background: The sabertooth cat, Smilodon fatalis, was an enigmatic predator without a true living analog. Their elongate canine teeth were more vulnerable to fracture than those of modern felids, making it imperative for them to immobilize prey with their forelimbs when making a kill. As a result, their need for heavily muscled forelimbs likely exceeded that of modern felids and thus should be reflected in their skeletons. Previous studies on forelimb bones of S. fatalis found them to be relatively robust but did not quantify their ability to withstand loading. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using radiographs of the sabertooth cat, Smilodon fatalis, 28 extant felid species, and the larger, extinct American lion Panthera atrox, we measured cross-sectional properties of the humerus and femur to provide the first estimates of limb bone strength in bending and torsion. We found that the humeri of Smilodon were reinforced by cortical thickening to a greater degree than those observed in any living felid, or the much larger P. atrox. The femur of Smilodon also was thickened but not beyond the normal variation found in any other felid measured. Conclusions/Significance: Based on the cross-sectional properties of its humerus, we interpret that Smilodon was a powerful predator that differed from extant felids in its greater ability to subdue prey using the forelimbs.     The open abdomen (OA) is defined as intentional decision to leave the fascial edges of the abdomen un-approximated after laparotomy (laparostomy). The abdominal contents are potentially exposed and therefore must be protected with a temporary coverage, which is referred to as temporal abdominal closure (TAC). OA use remains widely debated with many specific details deserving detailed assessment and clarification. To date, in patients with intra-abdominal emergencies, the OA has not been formally endorsed for routine utilization; although, utilization is seemingly increasing. Therefore, the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), Abdominal Compartment Society (WSACS) and the Donegal Research Academy united a worldwide group of experts in an international consensus conference to review and thereafter propose the basis for evidence-directed utilization of OA management in non-trauma emergency surgery and critically ill patients. In addition to utilization recommendations, questions with insufficient evidence urgently requiring future study were identified.Peer reviewe
