A Model of Cooperative Threads
We develop a model of concurrent imperative programming with threads. We
focus on a small imperative language with cooperative threads which execute
without interruption until they terminate or explicitly yield control. We
define and study a trace-based denotational semantics for this language; this
semantics is fully abstract but mathematically elementary. We also give an
equational theory for the computational effects that underlie the language,
including thread spawning. We then analyze threads in terms of the free algebra

Leveraging Semantic Web Service Descriptions for Validation by Automated Functional Testing
Recent years have seen the utilisation of Semantic Web Service descriptions for automating a wide range of service-related activities, with a primary focus on service discovery, composition, execution and mediation. An important area which so far has received less attention is service validation, whereby advertised services are proven to conform to required behavioural specifications. This paper proposes a method for validation of service-oriented systems through automated functional testing. The method leverages ontology-based and rule-based descriptions of service inputs, outputs, preconditions and effects (IOPE) for constructing a stateful EFSM specification. The specification is subsequently utilised for functional testing and validation using the proven Stream X-machine (SXM) testing methodology. Complete functional test sets are generated automatically at an abstract level and are then applied to concrete Web services, using test drivers created from the Web service descriptions. The testing method comes with completeness guarantees and provides a strong method for validating the behaviour of Web services
Protein folding rates correlate with heterogeneity of folding mechanism
By observing trends in the folding kinetics of experimental 2-state proteins
at their transition midpoints, and by observing trends in the barrier heights
of numerous simulations of coarse grained, C-alpha model, Go proteins, we show
that folding rates correlate with the degree of heterogeneity in the formation
of native contacts. Statistically significant correlations are observed between
folding rates and measures of heterogeneity inherent in the native topology, as
well as between rates and the variance in the distribution of either

Non-Markovian Configurational Diffusion and Reaction Coordinates for Protein Folding
The non-Markovian nature of polymer motions is accounted for in folding
kinetics, using frequency-dependent friction. Folding, like many other problems
in the physics of disordered systems, involves barrier crossing on a correlated
energy landscape. A variational transition state theory (VTST) that reduces to
the usual Bryngelson-Wolynes Kramers approach when the non-Markovian aspects
are neglected is used to obtain the rate, without making any assumptions
regarding the size of the barrier, or the memory time of the friction. The
transformation to collective variables dependent on the dynamics of the system
allows the theory to address the controversial issue of what are ``good''

Sound and complete axiomatizations of coalgebraic language equivalence
Coalgebras provide a uniform framework to study dynamical systems, including
several types of automata. In this paper, we make use of the coalgebraic view
on systems to investigate, in a uniform way, under which conditions calculi
that are sound and complete with respect to behavioral equivalence can be
extended to a coarser coalgebraic language equivalence, which arises from a
generalised powerset construction that determinises coalgebras. We show that
soundness and completeness are established by proving that expressions modulo
axioms of a calculus form the rational fixpoint of the given type functor. Our
main result is that the rational fixpoint of the functor , where is a
monad describing the branching of the systems (e.g. non-determinism, weights,
probability etc.), has as a quotient the rational fixpoint of the
"determinised" type functor , a lifting of to the category of
-algebras. We apply our framework to the concrete example of weighted
automata, for which we present a new sound and complete calculus for weighted
language equivalence. As a special case, we obtain non-deterministic automata,
where we recover Rabinovich's sound and complete calculus for language

Optically Selected BL Lacertae Candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven
We present a sample of 723 optically selected BL Lac candidates from the SDSS
DR7 spectroscopic database encompassing 8250 deg^2 of sky; our sample
constitutes one of the largest uniform BL Lac samples yet derived. Each BL Lac
candidate has a high-quality SDSS spectrum from which we determine
spectroscopic redshifts for ~60% of the objects. Redshift lower limits are
estimated for the remaining objects utilizing the lack of host galaxy flux
contamination in their optical spectra; we find that objects lacking
spectroscopic redshifts are likely at systematically higher redshifts.
Approximately 80% of our BL Lac candidates match to a radio source in
FIRST/NVSS, and ~40% match to a ROSAT X-ray source. The homogeneous
multiwavelength coverage allows subdivision of the sample into 637 radio-loud
BL Lac candidates and 86 weak-featured radio-quiet objects. The radio-loud
objects broadly support the standard paradigm unifying BL Lac objects with
beamed radio galaxies. We propose that the majority of the radio-quiet objects
may be lower-redshift (z<2.2) analogs to high-redshift weak line quasars (i.e.,
AGN with unusually anemic broad emission line regions). These would constitute
the largest sample of such objects, being of similar size and complementary in
redshift to the samples of high-redshift weak line quasars previously
discovered by the SDSS. However, some fraction of the weak-featured radio-quiet
objects may instead populate a rare and extreme radio-weak tail of the much
larger radio-loud BL Lac population. Serendipitous discoveries of unusual white
dwarfs, high-redshift weak line quasars, and broad absorption line quasars with
extreme continuum dropoffs blueward of rest-frame 2800 Angstroms are also

Minimum Degree up to Local Complementation: Bounds, Parameterized Complexity, and Exact Algorithms
The local minimum degree of a graph is the minimum degree that can be reached
by means of local complementation. For any n, there exist graphs of order n
which have a local minimum degree at least 0.189n, or at least 0.110n when
restricted to bipartite graphs. Regarding the upper bound, we show that for any
graph of order n, its local minimum degree is at most 3n/8+o(n) and n/4+o(n)
for bipartite graphs, improving the known n/2 upper bound. We also prove that
the local minimum degree is smaller than half of the vertex cover number (up to
a logarithmic term). The local minimum degree problem is NP-Complete and hard
to approximate. We show that this problem, even when restricted to bipartite
graphs, is in W[2] and FPT-equivalent to the EvenSet problem, which
W[1]-hardness is a long standing open question. Finally, we show that the local
minimum degree is computed by a O*(1.938^n)-algorithm, and a
O*(1.466^n)-algorithm for the bipartite graphs
Cataclysmic Variables and Other Compact Binaries in the Globular Cluster NGC 362: Candidates from Chandra and HST
Highly sensitive and precise X-ray imaging from Chandra, combined with the
superb spatial resolution of HST optical images, dramatically enhances our
empirical understanding of compact binaries such as cataclysmic variables and
low mass X-ray binaries, their progeny, and other stellar X-ray source
populations deep into the cores of globular clusters. Our Chandra X-ray images
of the globular cluster NGC 362 reveal 100 X-ray sources, the bulk of which are
likely cluster members. Using HST color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, we
quantitatively consider the optical content of the NGC 362 Chandra X-ray error
circles, especially to assess and identify the compact binary population in
this condensed-core globular cluster. Despite residual significant crowding in
both X-rays and optical, we identify an excess population of H{\alpha}-emitting
objects that is statistically associated with the Chandra X-ray sources. The
X-ray and optical characteristics suggest that these are mainly cataclysmic
variables, but we also identify a candidate quiescent low mass X-ray binary. A
potentially interesting and largely unanticipated use of observations such as
these may be to help constrain the macroscopic dynamic state of globular

GALEX, Optical and IR Light Curves of MQ Dra: UV Excesses at Low Accretion Rates
Ultraviolet light curves constructed from NUV and FUV detectors on GALEX
reveal large amplitude variations during the orbital period of the Low
Accretion Rate Polar MQ Dra (SDSSJ1553+55). This unexpected variation from a UV
source is similar to that seen and discussed in the Polar EF Eri during its low
state of accretion, even though the accretion rate in MQ Dra is an order of
magnitude lower than even the low state of EF Eri. The similarity in phasing of
the UV and optical light curves in MQ Dra imply a similar location for the
source of light. We explore the possibilities of hot spots and cyclotron
emission with simple models fit to the UV, optical and IR light curves of MQ
Dra. To match the GALEX light curves with a single temperature circular hot
spot requires different sizes of spots for the NUV and FUV, while a cyclotron
model that can produce the optical harmonics with a magnetic field near 60 MG
requires multipoles with fields > 200 MG to match the UV fluxes.Comment: accepted for ApJ; 15 pages, 7 tables, 8 fig
