Practical measurement of joint weak values and their connection to the annihilation operator
Weak measurements are a new tool for characterizing post-selected quantum
systems during their evolution. Weak measurement was originally formulated in
terms of von Neumann interactions which are practically available for only the
simplest single-particle observables. In the present work, we extend and
greatly simplify a recent, experimentally feasible, reformulation of weak
measurement for multiparticle observables [Resch and Steinberg (2004, Phys.
Rev. Lett., 92, 130402)]. We also show that the resulting ``joint weak values''
take on a particularly elegant form when expressed in terms of annihilation
operators.Comment: 13 pages, accepted to Physics Letters A (Dec. 2004
One-Way Entangled-Photon Autocompensating Quantum Cryptography
A new quantum cryptography implementation is presented that combines one-way
operation with an autocompensating feature that has hitherto only been
available in implementations that require the signal to make a round trip
between the users. Using the concept of advanced waves, it is shown that this
new implementation is related to the round-trip implementations in the same way
that Ekert's two-particle scheme is related to the original one-particle scheme
of Bennett and Brassard. The practical advantages and disadvantages of the
proposed implementation are discussed in the context of existing schemes.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; Minor edits--conclusions unchanged; accepted for

Conditional generation of arbitrary multimode entangled states of light with linear optics
We propose a universal scheme for the probabilistic generation of an
arbitrary multimode entangled state of light with finite expansion in Fock
basis. The suggested setup involves passive linear optics, single photon
sources, strong coherent laser beams, and photodetectors with single-photon
resolution. The efficiency of this setup may be greatly enhanced if, in
addition, a quantum memory is available.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Quantum theory of two-photon interference
In this paper, we study two-photon interference with the approach of photon
quantum theory, with specific attention to the two-photon interference
experiment carried out by Milena D'Angelo et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett 87:013602,
2001). We find the theoretical result is accordance with experiment data.Comment: arXiv admin note: substanital text overlap with arXiv:1011.3593, and

The effects of an experimental programme to support studentsâ autonomy on the overt behaviours of physical education teachers
Although the benefits of autonomy supportive behaviours are now well established in the literature, very few studies have attempted to train teachers to offer a greater autonomy support to their students. In fact, none of these studies has been carried out in physical education (PE). The purpose of this study is to test the effects of an autonomy-supportive training on overt behaviours of teaching among PE teachers. The experimental group included two PE teachers who were first educated on the benefits of an autonomy supportive style and then followed an individualised guidance programme during the 8 lessons of a teaching cycle. Their behaviours were observed and rated along 3 categories (i.e., autonomy supportive, neutral and controlling) and were subsequently compared to those of three teachers who formed the control condition. The results showed that teachers in the experimental group used more autonomy supportive and neutral behaviours than those in the control group, but no difference emerged in relation to controlling behaviours. We discuss the implications for schools of our findings
Bi-allelic JAM2 Variants Lead to Early-Onset Recessive Primary Familial Brain Calcification.
Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a combination of neurological, psychiatric, and cognitive decline associated with calcium deposition on brain imaging. To date, mutations in five genes have been linked to PFBC. However, more than 50% of individuals affected by PFBC have no molecular diagnosis. We report four unrelated families presenting with initial learning difficulties and seizures and later psychiatric symptoms, cerebellar ataxia, extrapyramidal signs, and extensive calcifications on brain imaging. Through a combination of homozygosity mapping and exome sequencing, we mapped this phenotype to chromosome 21q21.3 and identified bi-allelic variants in JAM2. JAM2 encodes for the junctional-adhesion-molecule-2, a key tight-junction protein in blood-brain-barrier permeability. We show that JAM2 variants lead to reduction of JAM2 mRNA expression and absence of JAM2 protein in patient's fibroblasts, consistent with a loss-of-function mechanism. We show that the human phenotype is replicated in the jam2 complete knockout mouse (jam2 KO). Furthermore, neuropathology of jam2 KO mouse showed prominent vacuolation in the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and cerebellum and particularly widespread vacuolation in the midbrain with reactive astrogliosis and neuronal density reduction. The regions of the human brain affected on neuroimaging are similar to the affected brain areas in the myorg PFBC null mouse. Along with JAM3 and OCLN, JAM2 is the third tight-junction gene in which bi-allelic variants are associated with brain calcification, suggesting that defective cell-to-cell adhesion and dysfunction of the movement of solutes through the paracellular spaces in the neurovascular unit is a key mechanism in CNS calcification
Emerging themes to support ambitious UK marine biodiversity conservation
Healthy marine ecosystems provide a wide range of resources and services that support life on Earth and contribute to human wellbeing. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are accepted as an important tool for the restoration and maintenance of marine ecosystem structure, function, health and ecosystem integrity through the conservation of significant species, habitats, or entire ecosystems. In recent years there has been a rapid expansion in the area of ocean designated as an MPA. Despite this progress in spatial protection targets and the progressive knowledge of the essential interdependence between the human and the ocean system, marine biodiversity continues to decline, placing in jeopardy the range of ecosystem services benefits humans rely on. There is a need to address this shortcoming. Ambitious marine conservation:âą Requires a shift from managing individual marine features within MPAs to whole-sites to enable repair and renewal of marine systems;âą Reflects an ambition for sustainable livelihoods by fully integrating fisheries management with conservation (Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management) as the two are critically interdependent;âą Establishes a world class and cost effective ecological and socio-economic monitoring and evaluation framework that includes the use of controls and sentinel sites to improve sustainability in marine management; andâą Challenges policy makers and practitioners to be progressive by integrating MPAs into the wider seascape as critical functional components rather than a competing interest and move beyond MPAs as the only tool to underpin the benefits derived from marine ecosystems by identifying other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) to establish synergies with wider governance frameworks
