The article aims to contribute to the construction, through the axial concept of empathy, of both a theoretical and clinical approach which may offer some guidance on the management of borderline cases and situations not easily treated by the classical psychoanalytical method. The study of the notion of empathy will be done from three perspectives: as a mode of listening, as a form of communication and as a therapeutic factor. Our goal is to sustain the adoption of empathy as a clinical tool that allows the expansion of the limits of intervention, including new possibilities of action not provided by the interpretative method alone

Alternative road pricing schemes are promising strategies to alleviate congestion and other environmental problems related to urban and regional road transportation. However, in practice, environmental issues are not often taken into account, especially at regional level. In 2010, due to the financial crisis in Portugal, several tolls were introduced in some motorways that were previously financed by the government. One of these cases was the A29 motorway, which connects the cities of Aveiro and Oporto. After the introduction of tolls about 50% of the Average Daily Traffic shifted to alternative routes or modes. This paper discusses the impact that tolls had on route choice, and evaluates the consequences in terms of emissions and energy use on the road network after tolls were implemented. Experimental tests were conducted during off-peak and peak periods before and after toll implementation. Vehicle dynamics were measured using a high-sensitivity GPS data logger. Using more than 10 000 km and 174 hours of data, a micro-scale methodology based on the Vehicle Specific Power (VSP) concept was used to extract second-by-second emissions in four alternative routes. The changes in traffic distribution caused by the introduction of tolls did not cause a significant impact in terms of emissions factors on the alternative routes. However, the findings indicate that the diversion of traffic from A29 to local roads implies an increase in CO2 emissions and a reduction in local pollutants emissions such as CO and NOx

Cell-based therapies for stroke : promising solution or dead end?

    Get PDF
The introduction of recanalization procedures has revolutionized acute stroke management, although the narrow time window, strict eligibility criteria and logistical limitations still exclude the majority of patients from treatment. In addition, residual deficits are present in many patients who undergo therapy, preventing their return to premorbid status. Hence, there is a strong need for novel, and ideally complementary, approaches to stroke management. In preclinical experiments, cell-based treatments have demonstrated beneficial effects in the subacute and chronic stages following stroke [1; 2; 3] and therefore are considered a promising option to supplement current clinical practice. At the same time, great progress has been made in developing clinically feasible delivery and monitoring protocols [4]. However, efficacy results initially reported in clinical studies fell short of expectations [5] raising concerns that cell treatment might eventually share the ‘dead end fate’ of many previous experimental stroke therapies. This Research Topic reviews some of the latest and most innovative studies to summarize the state of the art in translational cell treatments for stroke

Business Intelligence (BI) has gained over the years increasingly preponderance in the business world, with companies recognizing their contribution to organizational performance, especially in supporting decision making. In such a competitive and vol-atile market, this concept gains greater prominence for small and medium-sized en-terprises (SMEs), which have greater limitations in acquiring competitive advantage over competitors. Implementing a BI system in these companies is then a way to in-crease the productivity of companies. However, implementation is not an easy pro-cess, and depends on several factors. It is therefore necessary to meet a set of require-ments necessary for effective implementation, mainly targeted at small and medium-sized enterprises. With this study, it is intended to provide basic knowledge on various subjects re-lated to BI and its implementation. The significance of critical success factors is clari-fied, and an investigation is carried out to clarify the most important factors for im-plementing BI in an SME, and their different preponderances. Based on this, a ma-turity model is created with the objective of evaluating the maturity level of a BI sys-tem in an SME. Subsequently, the results of the evaluations were analyzed, and dif-ferent conclusions were drawn. This work can serve as a basis for future investigations into BI applied to SMEs. Despite the growth in BI research, the vast majority do not apply to SMEs, which act as "the engine of the economy" and account for 99% of the Portuguese business fabric

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study based on evaluation of data from Serviço de Cirurgia, Neurologia and Consult de Neurology processes, between 1990-2003, of 15 patients submitted to total thymectomy. RESULTS: 15 patients, aged 17 to 72, 11 female and 4 male. Miastenia Gravis was the main indication for surgery, for uncontrollable symptoms or suspicion of thymoma. In patients with myasthenia, surgery was accomplish after compensation of symptoms. There weren't post-surgery complications. Pathology were divided in thymic hyperplasia and thymoma. Miastenia patients have there symptoms diminished or stable with reduction or cessation of medical therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Miastenia was the most frequent indication for thymectomy. Surgery was good results, with low morbimortality, as long as the protocols are respected

Rapid microsphere‐assisted peptide screening (MAPS) of promiscuous MHCII‐binding peptides in Zika virus envelope protein

Despite promising developments in computational tools, peptide‐class II MHC (MHCII) binding predictors continue to lag behind their peptide‐class I MHC counterparts. Consequently, peptide–MHCII binding is often evaluated experimentally using competitive binding assays, which tend to sacrifice throughput for quantitative binding detail. Here, we developed a high‐throughput semiquantitative peptide–MHCII screening strategy termed microsphere‐assisted peptide screening (MAPS) that aims to balance the accuracy of competitive binding assays with the throughput of computational tools. Using MAPS, we screened a peptide library from Zika virus envelope (E) protein for binding to four common MHCII alleles (DR1, DR4, DR7, DR15). Interestingly, MAPS revealed a significant overlap between peptides that promiscuously bind multiple MHCII alleles and antibody neutralization sites. This overlap was also observed for rotavirus outer capsid glycoprotein VP7, suggesting a deeper relationship between B cell and CD4+ T cell specificity which can facilitate the design of broadly protective vaccines to Zika and other viruses.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/154342/1/aic16697.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/154342/2/aic16697_am.pd
