The present article begins with a brief exposition of the more relevant known data about the life of the Andalusian Ibn Masarra al-Ŷabalī (883-931) and his works. After this biography, some aspects of the discussion around Asín Palacios pioneering study on the thought of the author are explored, considering the situation before the recent discovery of two of his writings and after it. Different opinions on the nature of Ibn Masarra’s discourse are then exposed, analysing whether it must be understood as philosophy or as a kind of mystical thought characterised by gnosis. A complete commented translation of all passages referring to philosophy and philosophers in Ibn Masarra’s known works is offered in the last section

An Approach on Integrated Territorial Competitiveness to Ensure Long Term Viability in Rural Areas of Andalusia (Spain)

After more than ten years of rural development programmes in Andalusia, there is ongoing concern about the sustainability of the rural development initiated by the LEADER-PRODER programmes in the hypothetical event that such programmes were no longer in place. In order to be able to express an opinion about this issue, it is important to answer to an entire series of questions about the concept of territorial competitiveness as a guarantee of the long term viability of a rural area. In order to be able to respond to these questions, as part of a wider research project into the transformation of rural areas in Andalusia, the competitive position of 3 territories in the "Campina Alta" (Cordoba), which have been benefiting from rural development programmes for several years, were analysed. This paper presents some of our results relating to territorial competitiveness. The analysis were chiefly qualitative, and was applied to the "case study" abovementioned. The methodology used is based fundamentally on the analysis proposal of territorial competitiveness provided by the European Observatory, supplemented with elements of the methodology proposed by the IICA. The results indicate: 1) one cannot generalise about whether certain factors in isolation are positive or negative for territorial competitiveness, 2) only a comprehensive approach to territorial competitiveness can guarantee the long term viability of a rural area and 3) the risks associated when the viability of the territory is linked to the existence of development programmes, whose presence is not guaranteed for the future.Community/Rural/Urban Development,

Politics of fear. Violence and resistances

    Get PDF
This text seeks to introduce and present the monograph Politics of fear. Violence and resistance. In it, we account for the main premises concerning the current socio-political context, which motivated us to open this invitation to write. These premises would be the link between public and private violences, that produce a global scenario of generalized and diffused violences; the existence of warlike scenarios that foster violence and fear as part of domination strategies; and the use of fear as part of the neoliberal government practices. We present the themes through which the authors reflect theoretically, analyzing empirically different local resistance experiences of the contemporary world. Finally, we present briefly our understanding of the concepts used to organize his monograph

In this article we have tried to analyze the speech of a cerebral paralytic person, who did not have an adequate special education treatment, comparing it with the normal speech of an adult woman. Cerebral paralysis, as any motor pathology, has an effect on the movement of the vocal chords (phonation) and the articulation organs of pharynx and mouthnose. The computarized speech lab makes it possible to verify the type of disorder: phonatory or articulative. This type of analysis can be very useful in the diagnosis and subsequent therapy of cerebral paralytic individuals

Recently, a copy of the until now unavailable book al-garīb al-muntaqà min kalm ahl al-tuqà has been found. In the manuscript, its authorship is attributed to Ibn Masarra. This article shows that its more plausible author is, according to the sources that mention this title, Ibn Khamīs al-Jāburī, an important link in the history of Andalusian Sufism. The structure and content of this ascetic and mystical work which Ibn Khamīs transmitted to the famous qāḍī ‘Iyāḍ are also studied here.

Identification and validation of reference genes for RT-qPCR normalization in wheat meiosis

    Get PDF
Meiosis is a specialized type of cell division occurring in sexually reproducing organisms to generate haploid cells known as gametes. In flowering plants, male gametes are produced in anthers, being encased in pollen grains. Understanding the genetic regulation of meiosis key events such as chromosome recognition and pairing, synapsis and recombination, is needed to manipulate chromosome associations for breeding purposes, particularly in important cereal crops like wheat. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is widely used to analyse gene expression and to validate the results obtained by other transcriptomic analyses, like RNA-seq. Selection and validation of appropriate reference genes for RT-qPCR normalization is essential to obtain reproducible and accurate expression data. In this work, twelve candidate reference genes were evaluated using the mainstream algorithms geNorm, Normfinder, BestKeeper and ΔCt, then ranked from most to least suitable for normalization with RefFinder. Different sets of reference genes were recommended to normalize gene expression data in anther meiosis of bread and durum wheat, their corresponding genotypes in the absence of the Ph1 locus and for comparative studies among wheat genotypes. Comparisons between meiotic (anthers) and somatic (leaves and roots) wheat tissues were also carried out. To the best of our knowledge, our study provides the first comprehensive list of reference genes for robust RT-qPCR normalization to study differentially expressed genes during male meiosis in wheat in a breeding framework

A pleiotropic variant in DNAJB4 is associated with multiple myeloma risk

This study was partially supported by intramural funds of University of Pisa and DKFZ. Open Access Funding provided by Universita degli Studi di Pisa within the CRUI-CARE Agreement.Pleiotropy, which consists of a single gene or allelic variant affecting multiple unrelated traits, is common across cancers, with evidence for genome-wide significant loci shared across cancer and noncancer traits. This feature is particularly relevant in multiple myeloma (MM) because several susceptibility loci that have been identified to date are pleiotropic. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify novel pleiotropic variants involved in MM risk using 28 684 independent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from GWAS Catalog that reached a significant association (P < 5 x 10(-8)) with their respective trait. The selected SNPs were analyzed in 2434 MM cases and 3446 controls from the International Lymphoma Epidemiology Consortium (InterLymph). The 10 SNPs showing the strongest associations with MM risk in InterLymph were selected for replication in an independent set of 1955 MM cases and 1549 controls from the International Multiple Myeloma rESEarch (IMMEnSE) consortium and 418 MM cases and 147 282 controls from the FinnGen project. The combined analysis of the three studies identified an association between DNAJB4-rs34517439-A and an increased risk of developing MM (OR = 1.22, 95%CI 1.13-1.32, P = 4.81 x 10(-7)). rs34517439-A is associated with a modified expression of the FUBP1 gene, which encodes a multifunctional DNA and RNA-binding protein that it was observed to influence the regulation of various genes involved in cell cycle regulation, among which various oncogenes and oncosuppressors. In conclusion, with a pleiotropic scan approach we identified DNAJB4-rs34517439 as a potentially novel MM risk locus.University of PisaDKFZUniversita degli Studi di Pisa within the CRUI-CARE Agreemen

Conservation laws, classical symmetries and exact solutions of the generalized KdV-Burgers-Kuramoto equation

For a generalized KdV-Burgers-Kuramoto equation we have studied conservation laws by using the multiplier method, and investigated its first-level and second level potential systems. Furthermore, the Lie point symmetries of the equation and the Lie point symmetries associated with the conserved vectors are determined. We obtain travellingwave reductions depending on the form of an arbitrary function. We present some explicit solutions: soliton solutions, kinks and antikinks
