An SMP Soft Classification Algorithm for Remote Sensing
This work introduces a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) version of the continuous iterative
guided spectral class rejection (CIGSCR) algorithm, a semiautomated classification algorithm for remote
sensing (multispectral) images. The algorithm uses soft data clusters to produce a soft classification
containing inherently more information than a comparable hard classification at an increased computational
cost. Previous work suggests that similar algorithms achieve good parallel scalability, motivating the parallel
algorithm development work here. Experimental results of applying parallel CIGSCR to an image with
approximately 10^8 pixels and six bands demonstrate superlinear speedup. A soft two class classification is
generated in just over four minutes using 32 processors
The Full-sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer -- Astrometry for the New Millennium
FAME is designed to perform an all-sky, astrometric survey with unprecedented
accuracy. It will create a rigid astrometric catalog of 4x10^7 stars with 5 <
m_V < 15. For bright stars, 5 < m_V < 9, FAME will determine positions and
parallaxes accurate to < 50 microarcseconds, with proper motion errors < 50
microarcseconds/year. For fainter stars, 9 < m_V < 15, FAME will determine
positions and parallaxes accurate to < 500 microarcseconds, with proper motion
errors < 500 microarcseconds/year. It will also collect photometric data on

Hydrogen Fluoride in High-Mass Star-forming Regions
Hydrogen fluoride has been established to be an excellent tracer of molecular
hydrogen in diffuse clouds. In denser environments, however, the HF abundance
has been shown to be approximately two orders of magnitude lower. We present
Herschel/HIFI observations of HF J=1-0 toward two high-mass star formation
sites, NGC6334 I and AFGL 2591. In NGC6334 I the HF line is seen in absorption
in foreground clouds and the source itself, while in AFGL 2591 HF is partially
in emission. We find an HF abundance with respect to H2 of 1.5e-8 in the
diffuse foreground clouds, whereas in the denser parts of NGC6334 I, we derive
a lower limit on the HF abundance of 5e-10. Lower HF abundances in dense clouds
are most likely caused by freeze out of HF molecules onto dust grains in
high-density gas. In AFGL 2591, the view of the hot core is obstructed by
absorption in the massive outflow, in which HF is also very abundant 3.6e-8)
due to the desorption by sputtering. These observations provide further
evidence that the chemistry of interstellar fluorine is controlled by freeze

Conceptual frameworks linking agriculture and food security
Many conceptual frameworks have been developed to facilitate understanding and analysis of the linkages between agriculture and food security. Despite having usefully guided analysis and investment, these frameworks exhibit wide diversity in perspectives, assumptions and application. This Review Article examines this diversity, providing an approach to assess frameworks and suggesting improvements in the way they are specified and applied. Using criteria-based systems modelling conventions, we evaluate 36 frameworks. We find that many frameworks are developed for the purpose of illustration rather than analysis and do not clearly indicate causal relationships, tending to ignore the dynamic (stability) dimensions of agriculture and food security and lacking clear intervention points for improving food security through agriculture. By applying system modelling conventions to a widely used framework, we illustrate how such conventions can enhance the usefulness of a framework for overall illustration purposes, delineate hypotheses on agriculture–food security links and examine potential impacts of interventions.acceptedVersio
Global and Local Conformation of Human IgG Antibody Variants Rationalizes Loss of Thermodynamic Stability.
Immunoglobulin G (IgG) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are a major class of medicines, with high specificity and affinity towards targets spanning many disease areas. The antibody Fc (fragment crystallizable) region is a vital component of existing antibody therapeutics, as well as many next generation biologic medicines. Thermodynamic stability is a critical property for the development of stable and effective therapeutic proteins. Herein, a combination of ion-mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) approaches have been used to inform on the global and local conformation and dynamics of engineered IgG Fc variants with reduced thermodynamic stability. The changes in conformation and dynamics have been correlated with their thermodynamic stability to better understand the destabilising effect of functional IgG Fc mutations and to inform engineering of future therapeutic proteins.This is the author accepted manuscript. The objective of the Geopotential Panel was to develop a program of data acquisition and model development for the Earth's gravity and magnetic fields that meet the basic science requirements of the solid Earth and ocean studies. Presented here are the requirements for gravity information and models through the end of the century, the present status of our knowledge, data acquisition techniques, and an outline of a program to meet the requirements
The Canada-UK Deep Submillimetre Survey: The Survey of the 14-hour field
We have used SCUBA to survey an area of 50 square arcmin, detecting 19
sources down to a 3sigma sensitivity limit of 3.5 mJy at 850 microns. We have
used Monte-Carlo simulations to assess the effect of source confusion and noise
on the SCUBA fluxes and positions, finding that the fluxes of sources in the
SCUBA surveys are significantly biased upwards and that the fraction of the 850
micron background that has been resolved by SCUBA has been overestimated. The
radio/submillmetre flux ratios imply that the dust in these galaxies is being
heated by young stars rather than AGN. We have used simple evolution models
based on our parallel SCUBA survey of the local universe to address the major
questions about the SCUBA sources: (1) what fraction of the star formation at
high redshift is hidden by dust? (2) Does the submillimetre luminosity density
reach a maximum at some redshift? (3) If the SCUBA sources are
proto-ellipticals, when exactly did ellipticals form? However, we show that the
observations are not yet good enough for definitive answers to these questions.
There are, for example, acceptable models in which 10 times as much
high-redshift star formation is hidden by dust as is seen at optical
wavelengths, but also acceptable ones in which the amount of hidden star
formation is less than that seen optically. There are acceptable models in
which very little star formation occurred before a redshift of three (as might
be expected in models of hierarchical galaxy formation), but also ones in which
30% of the stars have formed by this redshift. The key to answering these
questions are measurements of the dust temperatures and redshifts of the SCUBA

A geometric discretisation scheme applied to the Abelian Chern-Simons theory
We give a detailed general description of a recent geometrical discretisation
scheme and illustrate, by explicit numerical calculation, the scheme's ability
to capture topological features. The scheme is applied to the Abelian
Chern-Simons theory and leads, after a necessary field doubling, to an
expression for the discrete partition function in terms of untwisted
Reidemeister torsion and of various triangulation dependent factors. The
discrete partition function is evaluated computationally for various
triangulations of and of lens spaces. The results confirm that the
discretisation scheme is triangulation independent and coincides with the
